I think you’re being a bit overly esoteric about something that is pretty cut n’dry.
Let’s not worry about the “future” (or the past) and live in the *now for a moment.
Right NOW, swastikas and confederate flags are reminders of murder, hate and tragedy. Period. We didn’t get to decide that and there’s nothing that can change it. But no one is having a crisis of conscience whenever they see these things as to what they mean and were and are used for.
And part of my own confusion about this stupid generational debate, sums up with, “To what end”? Why? What for? What the FUCK does it matter? The confederate flag means NOTHING to anyone outside of the US. What would it mean if tomorrow no one ever thought of lynch mobs and slave trading whenever they saw a confederate flag? What would suddenly happen once this dopey little flag is “free” from its supposedly unfounded reputation? Nothing. There is no end game. It’s just a bullshit excuse to piss people off and get into fights when they get “eyeballed” for it.
And again, no one’s saying you don’t have the right to wave whatever flag you wanna… everyone’s just saying you have no choice in the matter as to how the rest of the world has chosen to define such things and have no way of proving wrong the “stereotypes” that that imagery evokes. It’s not about what it WAS, not what it could be… what it is NOW is a symbol of racism and bigotry. You don’t have to like it but you don’t get to tell anyone they are wrong because IT IS. The fact that a person is even being told that it is, is all that needs to be known to act accordingly…. but no.

So Buddhists have to live with the fact that their Manji is now a sign of bigotry and hatred because that’s the way people see it.
Just like Juggalos have to live with the fact that the Hatchet Man is a sign of mental retardation and gang affiliation because that’s the way people see it.
Makes sense to me.

Not quite.
Answer to first part: Yes. Yes they do. Sucks it worked out that way but yes.
Answer to second part: Improper appeal. The confederate and Nazi flags were used by ACTUAL groups that ACTUALLY committed historical atrocities and ACTUALLY used those flags as the hallmarks of the ideals that motivated them. The two flags were ACTUALLY intended to remind people of those ideals.
The kind of associations that get levied against Juggalos and the Hatchman are not actually based on anything nearly so representative of FACTS surrounding the opinions about them as are the other two. The Hatchetman is the symbol of a band that gets maligned like it’s a fad. Hardly the same thing. One was used to create fear and the other has fear projected upon it.
I KNOW!
How about we get flag defenders all a pair of magic glasses so they can read the super secret writing that gets printed into the fibers of every confederate/rebel flag with a special ink that ONLY minorities can see, so they’ll finally be able to read the race coded message on every flag that sez: “I Hate N***rs!” (fill in your own favorite minority)?!
People hate on the Hatchetman because they don’t know any better; and people hate on the confederate flag because they do.

People hate on the Hatchetman because they don’t know any better; and people hate on the confederate flag because they do.
There were swaztikas (or similar shapes) everywhere in Korea outside Buddhist temples and nobody gave a fuck.
Apparently it’s ok to use “it’s tradition, it’s not racst!” When it comes to using a racial slur for a football team.
A bunch of native Americans (and a Native American cultural sensitivity ambassador) walked off set of the newest Adam Sandler film because of the insensitivity the filmmakers in terms of native cultures. Instead of toning down the movie, they’re using red-face on white people.
The American flag has represented nearly all the same ideals as the rebel flag at some point. It has stood for slavery, hatred, and war, too. But we’re the “good guys” so it doesn’t matter. History is written by the winners.

The nation was founded on it. I am glad it is abolished. It’s just part of history that…
http://home.nas.com/lopresti/ps.htm
Of the first five presidents, four owned slaves. All four of these owned slaves while they were president.
Of the next five presidents (#6-10), four owned slaves. Only two of them owned slaves while they were president.
Of the next five presidents (#11-15), two owned slaves. Both of these two owned slaves while they were president.
Of the next three presidents (#16-18) two owned slaves. neither of them owned slaves while serving as president.
The last president to own slaves while in office was the twelfth president, Zachary Taylor (1849-1850).
The last president to own slaves at all was the eighteenth president, Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877).
So twelve of our presidents owned slaves and eight of them owned slaves while serving as president.

@cheshyr , some of the replies here are my argument as well. It’s not just the south that has a history of slavery. It’s all of America yet some people tend to pretend that isn’t the case. More to your point though, if the rebel flag, today, was viewed as what it really is/was; a symbol of a young countries complications, bigotry, rebellion, state rights, anti-industrialism, the right to protest your government, etc. etc. (the list really does go on and on) maybe you’d have to actually think about the subject of American history instead of treating it like its “cut and dry” because it’s really, really not. It’s a complicated, bloody, dirty, history wherein both sides were kind of in the wrong, both sides were kind of in the right, both sides had valid points and both sides used their valid points as an excuse to go too far. Like I told you before, I highly recommend doing a little reading up on the subject. It’s rather fascinating once you stop pretending its an us vs them situation. No, I’m not being esoteric, you’re just being ignorant. I say that while acknowledging the difference between ignorant and stupid btw. It sounded harsh so I feel I need to clarify. You’re painting a picture of a supreme villain that no evidence agrees with except your feel bads.
I’m not going to give a defense of your second wave “flag defenders” shit because you’ve already used “flag defenders” once and made snooty comments, I replied to you about it, giving my reasons why you were wrong (at least in my case), you ignored that and did the same damned thing over again so you keep fighting that strawman to “prove” your point. I’ll ignore it and address you specifically.
You’re absolutely right that that flag represents bigotry right NOW but I would add to some. Your view doesn’t equal everyone’s view. You know that right? Just because that’s how you see it doesn’t mean that’s how everyone see’s it. Same with me. I don’t see it as purely a symbol of slavery and hate, some people do. And you have every right to disagree with me and I the same and blah, blah, blah, we’re both equals and such things. We’re on the same page there so no reason to cover that BUT that doesn’t mean I can’t throw my two cents out there to try and change your mind. Even if everyone agrees that the rebel flag represents pure hate, I would still argue it. Not that that isn’t what people think but that they shouldn’t think it. Which is what I’m doing and will continue to do every time the rebel flag comes up as the epitome of evil.

the thing is, celle, youre arguin in favor of the asswipes. doesnt matter if you got a good point or not, asswipes shouldnt have anybody in their corner.
if you dont agree with their asswipe philosophy, maybe its a devils advocate thing, or perhaps you feel that even the asswipes are entitled to a sincere defense.
but theyre still asswipes. and youre straining yourself to make them passable, whether thats what youre trying to do or not.
civil war history is some interesting shit, when you look at it academically. but that isnt the point. nor is it the point that grade school history is too ‘cut and dried’ [which it definitely is, but then, its hard enough to get kids to learn anything at all].
the point is, the vast majority of jerkoffs under the rebel flag are, in fact, jerkoffs. fuck them and their justifications.
awfully paranoid, arent you?

I know I’m arguing in defense of the asswipes. It’s not that I really want to, I’m sure someone can do it much better than me because I honestly don’t give a shit, it’s just another flag to me. The part I do give a shit about is when that thing (insert whatever it is because I end up in similar discussions a lot) is being wrongfully represented. I completely get that the rebel flag isn’t a thing that most people like and I completely get why that is but I think that the arguments against it tend to become so simplified and the flag itself gets so bastardized that you end up removing any actual discussion that there is to be had there. When you boil it down to “us vs them”, the only argument you have to make is “them”. Never been a fan of that, no matter who it’s done to.
*edit*
forgot to respond to your point. Sorry n shit.

Agree completely with the underlined.
Completely disagree with the bold. It doesn’t matter who you are, a good argument is a good argument. Just because they’re assholes doesn’t mean they don’t have good points sometimes. Unless I misunderstand your point.

Yeah, in regards to Pigg mentioning the Redskins… I’d rather be called a “redskin” than a fucking Indian. Fuck Columbus.
I always feel like a dick correcting people on the “indian” thing but man, how fucking terrible is that name?

And the funny thing is that he didn’t even discover anything. People were already here.

I’m not liking my history class right now, because we have to do amendments, and I can’t remember that fuckin’ shit.
But, we do get to choose a topic from the 70’s to present day to present. The teacher said if it’s a band, they have to not be performing anymore. I chose Esham.
