I chose Matthew specifically for a reason. The old testament was fulfilled (you know…for sake of conversation) but the law wasn’t abolished. Matthew 5:17 goes on to say; “Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” The first part of the verse is Jesus referring to his return to Earth to fulfill the laws of the old testament (one could also say he’s condoning them, which was my point) but the second half of the verse clears up everything else. The law is fulfilled but not abolished. Also won’t be abolished until “Heaven and Earth pass away” which hasn’t happened yet, therefor they still stand.

Shit, responses are growing. @ganjadude, I read yakks response as aggressive and his reply would imply it was meant as such but reading it as light hearted, yeah, it’s pretty funny. I separate faith and religion too but my post about the bible was a reply to @chops statement that we get our morals, ethics and the blueprint for US laws from religion. Thus why I was talking about religion. @yakkattack , you’re definitely not the only person on here that’s been getting wired up lol. It’s a touchy subject to some so of course shit’s gonna get a little….capslocky….
ahh, see now i read it that way as well and could see why. thats a big problem with text based communications at times. makes it difficult to get someones tone. I saw the lol and just assumed foolin around.
to say that the US doesnt get some of its basics from the bible would be laughable, but the same could be said about most western countries over the past 2K years. one can take ideals from the bible without believing the bible is anything more than a book written by men trying to understand the things around them.
if we wanna go all history on it, The majority of the founding fathers of our country were deists. they understood that religion was a tool that was being used for control. so that is why they did not want to establish an official religion of america. While at the same time, they were using the bible and other parts of religion to set things up. Thomas jefferson even had a bible that he made himself made from excerpts of other holy books. – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J…..rson_Bible
but the biggest thing is that they never said you HAD to believe what they believe. which is key to a lasting country IMO

That’s why I didn’t argue the US laws. In a sense, chops was right about those but it goes back to my whole point on it. The fact that they kept the parts they liked from the bible and ignored the rest means they were getting their understanding of right and wrong from something else right? Otherwise they would have no way to distinguish the “good” lessons from the “bad” lessons. I’m happy to have a discussion about whether or not those decisions came/come from societal pressure or from something divine but considering a paragraph from J about ICP’s new album resulted in 16 pages of arguments, it might be tricky on here.
I had Jeffersons Bible on my Kindle for a really long time but never got around to reading it. Maybe this is the excuse I need.

@yakkattack … Here… let me try to put this in other terms…
I’m like a fuckin’ Ghostbuster… ok? I’m fuckin’ Egon and Venkeman rolled into one.
The only “believer” amongst the bunch was Winston who brought up the Old Testament. BUT Venkeman was the one who said, “No one steps on a church in MY town!” when Stay-Puft crushed that church to get to them…
The Ghostbusters had a GOD from another dimension IN FRONT OF THEM and yet they never ascribed to have been attached to *A* religion. They had all kinds of “religion” up in their faces and yet never denounced any of them. THAT would be more “proof” of a deity than even the Christian “god” has been able to achieve EVER. They KNOW that an after-life exists because they fight its demons every day. Fictional movie or otherwise… no different than any “holy book”.
SHOW ME ANYTHING! And I will become Winston. Until then, I’ll be Venkeman trying to get laid and Egon rationalizing it all down to a Twinkie…
“I have seen shit that would turn you white!” and that is a fact! Shit I can’t explain but don’t chalk up to RELIGION for its explanation. Parallel dimensions, string and quantum theory… There’s a LOT of unknowable shit out there. But the basic tenants of atheism is that after we die there is nothing… I DON’T KNOW THAT. THEY don’t know that. NO ONE DOES. And that is why *I* can’t directly call myself an atheist.
Fuckin’ A! Even “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” had that in it: “The only true knowledge is in knowing that you know NOTHING” – So-crates…
Did you even WATCH that video I posted? Even if you skipped through it just to see the questions? The “atheist army” is the only thing anyone that has “no religion” has to defend themselves with against the kind of bullshit like people questioning the source of morality and how anyone can live their lives without “god”, so that’s why people post “atheist” videos… so that we don’t have to type shit out when you can just watch someone else say it FOR us… cuz some people need pictures in their books…
“Why are you so angry?” Pfft… I’m not “angry”… I’m emphatic… there’s a difference. Learn it.

let us not forget that the united states’ moral code is not exactly enlightened. nor the code of laws.
in my opinion, neither are ‘traditional american values’. of course, when someone says they are all about traditional american values, it usually turns out that they really mean exclusion of some sort [non-whites, women, gays, immigrants, single parents, people that play video games, and on and on and on et cetera ad asburdum]. so fuck those values anyway.
my moral code was developed by me [initially, by following the model of my parents, and later somewhat from friends. but by age 12 or so, just me].
and my code changes and redefines itself daily. i can stand it when ‘it was good enough back in the day’ is used as justification for something that applies to today and tomorrow.

this is a fair point. never exactly thought it out that way.
bein a cynic, though, i would expect that most of those abridgments came from, at best, social engineering, and at worst, sheer corruption.
many, many, many people have had their hands in the writing of the bible. maybe thousands. they all had different viewpoints and motives. just a few rotten apples couldve made drastic alterations that future generations would never even know about.
erasing your opponents’ histories was a very common tactic, before the enlightenment. pretty much a standard tactic, really.

Why even quote Mathew, Mark, Luke or John. They were not even written by them and we have discovered gospel manuscripts from various archeological sites that show the evolution of the gospel up to the ones originally included in the bible (before the council of Constantine decided what to keep and what to throw away). It’s interesting because the original texts do not show the author and it shows how many thing kept getting added. One notorious example is the last twelve verses of Mark, the first of the four Gospels believed to have been written. It depicts the resurrection of Jesus, but they were not part of Mark’s original Gospel. The verses were added later by an unidentified scribe. And then you have Mathew. Biblical scholars agree that most of his gospel were copied from Mark. And as the ages progressed, the gospels started to lose the original discrepancies between them and started becoming more alike. Then if you look at some of the oldest texts, like Thomas, you find that prior to the four “evangelical” writers, you have mention of Jesus but no mention of miracles or resurrection. You do find, though, that Thomas said you don’t need the church to find God cause God is everywhere. Funny how the church decided that a gospel that said you don’t need the church should be excluded from the bible. Modern scholarship, based on linguistic and textual analysis, and accompanied by the discovery of many ancient copies of gospel manuscripts, shows that all four gospels were written in Greek, outside of Roman Israel, around at least 60 years after the death of Jesus, all after the death of the original disciples.
Googling the question of who wrote the gospels turns up two very different types of results. The Believers who continue to perpetuate the myth that the church has be stating for centuries ignoring any evidence that points otherwise even to the point of using the words of the bible to support the validity of the bible in a circular logical way; and the Scholars who only look at the evidence and let the evidence speak for the validity of the bible.
That being said. I consider myself “Christian” in that I am a fan of the golden rule of Christianity: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I believe in God in a way that most people may not understand. I look at logic in the diatonic manner. There are only two states. True and False. True is real and False is not. Therefore what is real is God to me. And what is not real does not exist. Therefore all things are God. You, Me, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, my stool, Kami, and @mr-popo . :P

you know, really the bible itself doesnt properly enter into this discussion. j never said anything about it in the interview. may have consciously avoided it. so, bible attacks are irrelevant.
does anyone recall j sayin sumn during the shangrila days to the effect of, ‘we ask that you not bring your bible for us to sign, as me and shaggy have nothing to do with that book.’?
i dont think j is a christian, in the jesus-christ-is-my-savior sense. ive never asked, so i dont know, but even at his churchiest, its rare for him to point to jesus, the bible, or anything else that is christian-specific.

I think I’m the one that threw the bible stuff in. It had nothing to do with ICP though. It was a rebuttal to @chops’ earlier point that just kind of steered the convo in another direction. Don’t believe I’ve ever heard ICP mention Christianity, Jesus, or the Holy Bible. If anything I’ve heard them denounce that idea and do their own religious thing. I wouldn’t be shocked to learn J does that “sure, I believe in Jesus but not that Jesus” thing but that’s obviously speculation.

That’s right. I am God, my own God that is. That means I answer my own prayers and shit. Pretty awesome, because I can do it at my own leisure.

Some people don’t want to read or learn or gain a better understanding of other people’s views, they just want to cry and throw a tantrum over people not having the same beliefs. It’s pretty sad and pathetic, especially how said people are quick to claim that every one else is an ignorant moron that doesn’t understand logic.
I also find it very pathetic that such a comment from J has torn the forum into a battle ground. Certain people don’t want to take the time to understand why one with out god/religion would be offended, they’d rather just insult the whole group for not believing in what they believe. That makes you a bigot.
What’s most pathetic is how somebody could try to dress them self up to be a more enlightened individual and pretend to not be as bigoted as me when I say Kill All Christians! The two people I’m referencing are cowards hiding behind facades.
I’m sick of the bigotry and the victim complex claiming that it’s the other way around. You’re cowards, you’re bigots, you’re morons, and you’re childish.
Yeah, maybe I’m not a happy person, but neither are you. So it seems faith/God/religion have nothing to do with happiness.
Also, @scruffy I have called you out on insulting the whole forum, and I even PMed you when it happened. Difference is, if you really felt that way about the forum you wouldn’t be putting all this effort into doing cool stuff with/for the forum. PMB, Meet Up Massacres, this new project, you are there to put up all these fresh things just for us. Lucky doesn’t, Lucky threw a tantrum because people don’t believe in his God, condescended us, then tried to blame it all on me. Even tried to claim that he is more valuable to the forum than Slumerican. Over, yet again, misinterpreting a comment. Or perhaps just being too lazy to actually read the full thing before the tears started poring. Slumerican has paid more dues, Slumerican has started many more interesting discussions and Slumerican can actually get into a debate with out resulting to name calling, putting words in people’s mouths and false claims. I mean, Slumerican actually reads opposing arguments.
