I rarely buy music without hearing it first but when I do I always find it to be the right choice. I have had people telling me to run and get Asher Roth’s first album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, since it was released on 4 20 and I finally caved. He’s working on a completely unbiased opinion so here’s what I thought after putting his album on repeat in my VW for a week. Play… Track 1.

Lark on my Go-Kart – Great opening song, with kickin’ bass and snare, easily a head bobbing song. Its also the first time I’ve heard a Teddy Ruxbin reference since I was 5. He has great lyricism and with a flow that would put the Mississippi river to shame it definitely works as an intro to me.

Blunt Cruisin’ – Lyrically this song has a lot lacking but those KMK fans out there will find PLENTY to like about it. It’s rightly name Blunt Cruisin’, with a nice slow rolling beat I can see my self riding around blazing to this song any day. Other than that it’s a very basic stoner song.

I Love College – I’m almost certain if you’ve already heard of Asher Roth this is the song you’ve heard and you probably like it. However, for me, it doesn’t work. It mainstream production. Odds if you go to college you’ll see at least a dozen douche bag frat boys lip syncing to it. I have to admit he did organize it and flow it well but the end was weak, chanting “Chug chug chug, freshman freshman, do something crazy, keg stand keg stand”. If I want to get hyped about stuff like that I’ll watch Animal House or Van Wilder.

La Di Da – Great soul and psychedelic guitar sampling work on this song and the sublime tone really makes it work. If you ever need to cheer up or just need a nice song to get you through the day I would reach for La di Da immediately.

Be By Myself – My absolute favorite song on the album. He collaborates with Cee-Lo Green of Goodie Mob(most famously the singer for Gnarls Barkley). I am a huge fan of his and anyone he works with has my immediate respect. Aside from that you get to hear some nice gospel organs with steady bass and cymbals. The overall tone of the song is of a guy who just wants to be alone and enjoy the single life. Cee-Lo uses his voice the right way and adds to the already amazing soulful sound on this track. Asher gets straight to the point and you know that the song is straight from the heart.

She Don’t Wanna Man – Awesome idea to flip to the other side speaking of women who just go to the club to dance(Cue Dane Cook joke). Kind of another weak mainstream dance song but I still enjoyed it, thinking back to when I jammed out to Yeah by Usher. If your girl likes Black Eyed Peas or Pussycat Dolls I advise you put it on. Regardless of the lyrics if the moods right you just might have a good night. Lettes you better be payin attention. Musically I think it’s pretty basic but it was given it’s time due for production, nothing was left out, it’s just kind of bland to me.

Sour Patch Kids – He gives a pretty basic beat however his lyrical flow and piano samples save the song with some elbow room. The track basically is a big “Fuck the recession” about every aspect of tired shit which we are all pretty used to. He spits fire on this track in my opinion and the hooks are fantastic, with immaculate timing. My favorite lyric is “poverty is probably our biggest problem and it ain’t gonna stop with Obama to save the world we must start at the bottom” though I hear this everyday for some reason it speaks volumes coming out of my speaker.

As I Em – Man I LOVE the backbeat and the reggae and classical guitar. I feel this song in every aspect. BUT… he gives props to Eminem. Now I hate Eminem as much as the other guy but it’s still a good song and it’s not all about how good MM is. It’s mostly about how is always hearing criticism regarding his similarity to Mr. Mathers. Chester French a band from Harvard, is doing all the music in the back which is pretty rare nowadays aside from the Roots. I like it but all the Lo’s might have an odd itch about the Eminem link. Ugh… Next track.

Lion Roar – Who likes Drum & Bass? All hands raised will love this song to death. It features New Kingdom and Busta Rhymes. That’s right it’s Busta given his two cents. Great house song and his Ashers flow resembles a certain rapper from a lil group called Potluck. Busta blows up the mic and gives this party song about the primal pursuit of woman a rough tone. It rolls together perfectly and will always be on my party mix.

Bad Day – The name says it all. If you’ve had a really bad day which we all have you will feel it in his rapping. It almost seems like he just read all those Fuck My Life jokes and was inspired to make a song. Nothing brings the song down, in fact Jazze Pha brings his soulful voice to really complete the chorus. Great song but not for every day.

His Dream – If you like songs like Rendition of Reality or Nothing’s Left this is the song for you. An extremely smooth and heartfelt song it’s a wonderful one to relax too and get on his level. It really feels like Asher is trying to reach out to me and pouring out everything. Big R&B feel it helps to begin closing the album the right way.

Fallin’ – The last song on the album. He wraps up with kind of a walk through the hallway of his life reminiscing while looking ahead to a still brighter future regarding his career. Real upbeat but mellow he makes you feel like your just starting to come down off of ecstasy. It’s is a great way to make people feel like when they’re reviewing your record.

In the end I find it’s a great album for anyone around my age who can truly appreciate it (18-25). Coming from a lot of mainstream hype it stands as a diamond in the rough that is our BS music industry. I believe Asher Roth has got a long way to go and his peak as an artist has yet to be seen but I promise you he is rising rapidly. I plan on seeing him in Dallas in July 28th and I hope all the Lo’s will show an emerging artist the support he deserves.
