The Kottonmouth Kings have been recording and releasing music since their 1998 studio release Royal Highness they have been a pillar of music for any fan of Marijuana.  As a firm advocate for legalization of weed all of their releases have a similar theme, getting high.  For those who may not know anything or have lost touch with the ever changing lineup of the Kottonmouth Kings here is a brief update:

There has been a metamorphosis happening for the past few years with California based the Kottonmouth Kings. The group was injected with a new found creative firepower when they added Oregon based rapper the Dirtball to their ranks last year. Dirtball’s versatile vocal delivery allows him to snap off rapid fire rhymes ala Twista, while his background as a drummer/musician allows him to bring elements of rock, alt-rock and even bluegrass to the table. With a new found creative arsenal to attack with the Kottonmouth Kings sound is now constantly evolving.

Track by track review and rating

  1. Pound 4 Pound:  This is the into track to the album.  It has a slow but addictive beat.  The two verses that stand out were by D Loc and Dirtball, they absolutely killed their verses.  This is a great start to this CD.  9/10
  2. Hold It In:  A hard hitting Dubstep beat.  All the verses are ok but tend to blend together due to the content being all about Mary J.  No one really stands out but the track is good.  8/10
  3. Roll us a Joint:  A very addictive beat on the track. The hook has an awesome throwback to the Master P of old with it’s Hooty Hoo reference.  By far the best and most catchy track on the album.  10/10
  4. Get Some:  A high energy beat with a lot of electronic fill ins.  The track is ok but does not live up to the previous tracks standard.  7/10
  5. Packin the Goods:  Another Dubstep beat.  Has a great hook.  Easy to bob your head to this one.  8/10
  6. Kottonmouth Bitch:  This simple beat is very deceptive.  Very easy to jam to while driving or just chilling.  9/10
  7. Get Out Of the Way (featuring Saint Dog):  This track features the return of one of KMK’s founding members Saint Dog.  A moshing metal song similar to Rampage from Long Live the Kings.  Great track and a nice change of pace.  8/10
  8. Boombox:  Definitely a head bobber here.  You will find your system kicks and the hook will have you singing along.  8/10
  9. Green Dreams (Mile High):  The title track to the album.  A great tribute to the many varieties and flavors of weed.  Great beat with just the right blend of electronics over the beat.  8/10
  10. Bounce:  The beat is super hype on this track.  No verses really stand out and the beat seems to be wasted a little.  7/10
  11. High Haters:  One of the best beats on the album.  The verses show how the beat can be made even better when properly supported.  9/10
  12. Honey Dip (featuring Mickey Avalon):  One of the few tracks on the album which was a nice surprise content wise.  It was very strange to hear the kings rap about sex and getting with women.  But it works.  Mickey adds to the track but not a lot.  7/10
  13. Mr. Cali Man (featuring Saint Dog and CeeKay):  Back to their reggae roots with this track.  It is ok but belonged on Sunrise sessions.  6/10
  14. Watch out (featuring Twiztid):  Definitely a favorite track on the album.  Twiztid absolutely kills the beat.  KMK does not disappoint as they keep pace very well with the duo from Psychopathic Records.  9/10
  15. This Addiction:  Another good metal mosh track.  But sounds to similar to Get out the way to stand alone.  7/10
  16. End of the Rope (featuring Jahred of HED PE):  Great and very addictive beat.  Jahred is a very nice counter to the Kings smooth flow.  He provides an edge to the track that was a much needed change of pace.  9/10
  17. Judgment Day (featuring Saint Dog):  Nice slow Dubstep beat with a great hook.  Saint Dog again makes an appearance on the track and does his verse justice on this beat.  8/10
  18. Fight for Your Life:  The beat is tight and the verses are well done.  The track itself is another example of the Kings devotion to the Pro-weed legalization movement.  7/10

Conclusion: Having listened to the CD many times it is easy for me to say that this is one of the best albums in my collection.  It is fun and energetic.  It is another great installment from a group founded in 1995.  This being their 13th studio album you would expect the content they rap about to be getting past it’s prime.  But for some reason the Kings just keep evolving their sound, making the collaborations they choose for their albums vary, and never stop experimenting with new concepts or sounds (Dubstep and metal on this album in particular).  All in all a solid effort from the Kings that will leave new fans wanting more while leaving lifelong fans satisfied in the end.
