Okay. Here’s the potion for today’s class. Take one member of the Legendary Nu-Metal band KoЯn (Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu), one member of Rap-Rock supreme machines P.O.D (Noah “Wuv” Bernardo), one member of the Legendary rap group The Arsonists (Q-Unique), and newcomer Pablo “Spider” Silva And you get StillWell! Originally known as Capital Q StillWell is the latest side-project and the latest member of the epic legacy of KoЯn. Mixing east coast hip hop with west coast heavy metal to form “Street Metal”. That’s what we got here with Their debut album “Dirtbag”. Produced by Fieldy himself alongside The one and only PolarBear! (YES that same PolarBear! The same guy who produced quite a few songs for Psychopathic including songs by Blaze Ya Dead Homie, Twiztid, Esham, Soppa Villainz.)
At first I was curious about how this would work when I first heard about this project last year. Q-Unique is the lead vocalist much like Ice-T is for his band Body Count. Q-Unique has one hell of a metal voice that’s for sure. I personally like how it sounds on “Cyclone” alot. This is the type of metal I been waiting to hear for the last decade. Something that I can personally say is on the platform of Pantera and Slayer. StillWell Delivers. For those Classic Rock fan’s they did not disappoint if you’re an angry parent about to break into your teens room to break their cd’s because there’s “FUCK” in half of the songs and come to this.. “Whole Lotta love”… No it’s not a joke. They cover this classic Led Zeppelin song. And they do it in metal fashion and big metal vocals and loud metal guitars to almost mirror the original song to a key.
Now for those who gave part of this album a listen on youtube and went “Wait. Does Q rap on this bad boy?” The Answer is YES! Theres 3 rap/rock songs on this album. The last 3 songs happen to be rap/rock style songs. “They All Had Their Hands Up” starts it off with a tribute to both rap and rock legends paying homage and shouting out to alot of fucking people (to name a few: Nas, Axl Rose, Kerry King, Rick Ruban, Run DMC just to name a few. The lyrics sorta make it compare everybody being mentioned to being part of the history of the holy land. Fuckin’ pure insanity! Trepidation is more of a linkin park style rap-rock track with screaming raps. The final song Street Metal gives ya that Brooklyn style hip hop Q-Unique toned himself to mixed with the metal beat sending similarities to his fellow brooklyn rapper Necro (think some songs from both The Pre-Fix for Death and Death Rap).
All in all StillWell is something different but It’s the start of something I predicted would happen after Twiztid dropped heartbroken & Homicidal… And it’s the resurrection of the Rap-Rock Genre and trust me folks. There’s alot more to come from this genre. Think about that one. Sure I could be doing something better than writing this review. I could be at the gathering getting drunk with Ian and Scottie but I had to work lol. There’s always next year. Keep the Guinness cold for me boys!
