In today’s society when people hear the two words Rap and California in the same sentence their minds may wander to musical influences such as the N.W.A, Too $hort, Brotha Lynch Hung, Snoop D-O-double Geezy, as well as (within the last decade) The Kottonmouth Kings and their record label Suburban Noize Records. They’ve been a huge movement on the underground scene for at least the last ten years expressing their views on the government, marijuana reformal laws, and with the release of most recently “King Spade” getting crunk & partying.

A new duo added to the line up of Sub-noize, is the team consisting of 1 Ton and Underrated, Potluck. To me these two as stated on their newest release “Strait Outta Humboldt” may not be the best rappers out there, but I do believe they are some of the most determined. They’re both equally titans of the turntables, said on track 19 “Our Histroy”. I say this because when they actually first met up with one another, it was at a try out for a job at a club called “Jeffe’s” (I think).

“We were the two best so we got picked, Rockin’ four turntables! That was the shit!” – Potluck

As well as their label-mates, The Kings, they are two rowdy young bucks who like most of today’s youth spend a bulk of their time taking it easy and blowin’ back the bleezy’s. They can capture the energy of a crowd and keep them captivated. Having seen them perform at the Gathering of the Juggalos ’06 I came up with three conclusions.

1.) Underrated may be as small as he is, yet he packs one hell of a punch on the microphone.
2.) 1 Ton is a comedic master mind with his rhymes.
3.) This group if they have the devotion that they claim to have will blow up bigger than an atom bomb one day.

On the first three tracks of the cd, it feels kind of like a regular rap cd, you know smoke, drink, party, and bitches. As you get further and further into the cd they come at your eardrums with slower melodic sounds with songs like “Mary jane, My Life, Money makes the world go ’round, Love me, One day, Our history and the final track Funeral.”

Aside from finally having a bunch of dues paid for on the underground scene they’ve worked with a multitude of God-like lyricists on the underground scene. Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, E-40, Tech N9ne, Twiztid, The Luniz, and not to mention the mother fuckin’ Kings, need I say more? Once the cd gets going there is no stopping it until the last track expires. It gives just a small glance of the world through Potluck’s eyes and leaves you wanting more, which I can’t wait for.
