The White Trash Renegade comes with another tale from the West Coast in Las Vegas, Nevada with “Good Times Bad Advice”.

Big B has always brought some interesting tunes, catchy choruses and collaborations that vary from his Subnoize rostermates to even Psychopathic Records’ roster. Good Times & Bad Advice seems to follow Big B on a little more of a mature, yet slower paced album than the big man has brought before.

A lot more story telling with tracks like “Before I Leave”, telling stories in each verse ending in tragedy, “I Fucked Up” being more about broken promises, “Music Saved My Life” where Big B opens up about how everyone finds their muse from their own inner demons. Feel good tracks like “Good Times”, “Highs and Lows”, “Out Here In Cali” are more down to earth songs never really heard from the White Trash Renegade in the past.

Musically this album has taken a little more of a different turn.

Big B has always mixed hip hop with some hints of grunge or southern rock. This time around, Big B has settled for a bit of a Dave Matthews sound and some So-Cal ska-punk sound (reminiscent of Sublime), which is a bit different even for Big B’s sound. You could call it a more of a maturity or a downgrade of musical sound.

In conclusion, Good Times Bad & Advice to me had a bit of a mixed reaction. The more mature tracks listed above really stand out but in all honesty, I hope Big B returns to his original sound that everyone loves. Big B is talented but this album to me has seperated his talent from the experimental ska sound, into more of an unbalanced and unfamiliar quirk.

The Verdict: For all of you who enjoy some Bay Area style ska and more grown up lyrical content, this album is for you and for you die hard Big B fans. Newer fans will probably not welcome the different sound.
