I’m digging it as well. Glad I preordered, Hatchetgear threw in a Hallowicked single and a Jeckel Bros era sticker. Thanks, kids!

But then again, there are those albums that are dope as fuck on the first listen, and Young Wicked’s “Slaughter” is one of those albums. Currently on my 3rd listen, and i am positive this is underground album of the year material. This is absolutely great. Well done Otis, damn. There should be no denying him now and if there is, you’re intentionally looking for reasons to hate. Listen to “Go”, YW addresses this directly in that track.

@bayareashaman , nice!  I’ve been a Rhapsody subscriber for 10 years, since way before Spotify existed.  I thought I might be the only one left!

Slaughter is dope, I’m definitely digging it after a few listens.

Here’s my thing with Young Wicked, though.  He’s definitely super talented, both as producer and as an MC (and not just “talented” like he can rap real fast, talented like he’s a muscial genius who knows how to put shit together that sounds great).  But there’s something missing to me.  You could call it having an original voice, vision, whatever- it’s like a creative spark or imagination or something that’s just not there with him.  It’s exactly whatever the thing is that makes ICP great.  It’s most apparent on the track with Jellyroll- I’m not a big Jellyroll fan but IMO that’s one of the strongest tracks on the album just because Jellyroll brings sorely needed color and personality to it.

I think maybe Young Wicked might be better off in a group or duo with someone who’s more of a creative genius type that he could orbit around (not AMB) than as a solo artist.  Like he’s the muscial mastermind, with a frontman who brings what he lacks.

This! Exactly this! I spontanously (lol does this word exist in english language?) bought it at amazon after a few listens on youtube aaaaaand I think it’s surprisingly good – although something seems missing. Dunno. Maybe his link. höhö.

Whatever. Tomorrow I’m gonna listen to it in decent quality and with enough time. I appreciate it.

Well OK but I think the Indian scarecrow gimmick is still available, right?  What would be so wrong with that?

Well, maybe? Not sure yet. Of course it doesnt have to be such a special gimmick in first place. I never got that into Boondox for instance (even if some songs like “monster” are cool though) and I hope that Hoodoo steps kind of out of his gimmick. I wish him just the freedom to express himself, I really like his voice and think he’s dope. But I like special imagery, if thats the right expression. Basically I’m not totally sure what the essence is of what I like, but I definitely like to get enchanted like a lil princess? chrm. if you know what I mean.

For example, The Garcia Brothers didnt touch me, so I didnt care. It seems to.. generic? to me. Dunno. It always takes awhile for me to get into english rap music. There has to be a trigger, there has to be magic somehow that I’m feeling without understanding immediately, so that I dont lose interest in it at the beginning. That I feel forced to listen to. And lots of music just sound so average, just like Garcia Brothers. Yeah, kinda decent though, but everything else than outstanding. So I just keep looking for something that appeals to me. And for Otis, I’m not sure yet either. As I said, I really liked the first listen, but still felt that somethings missing. But, as I said as well, I have to give it a focused listen now.

Sorry fpr bad language perhaps, it’s 4 in the morning and I’m drunk.

Yeah, that sounds like exactly what I’m talking about.  What draws me in is when music is passionate, when someone has an inner world that they just have to express somehow.  Like J does, like Tech does, like lots of artists do.  Young Wicked doesn’t sound like he has something passionate that he has to express though, he sounds like he’s just real good at making music.  Which is cool as far as it goes and like I said I dig Slaughter.  But it also makes me wish that Otis’s talent could be put to better use somehow.

so because he dont wear face paint and is doing ‘real’ hip hop you like him less?

personally i think gimmmicky horrorcore rap has gotten to the point where NOONE should really be donig it anymore, icp and twiztid get away with it because well its such a part of them. but even they arent so gimmicky anymore. the paint is more becasue thats what theyve awlays done.

ive seen a heap of boondox vids lately with him without facepaint. facepaint and gimmicks are on the way out, i would love to see hoodoo go back to doing doe dubbla shit.

i think Otis brings something refreshing to psychopathic. something its been lacking for years now. a fresh approach to making music. you look at what they did to legz and MEC when they stepped to the forefront…. mec got the mad scientist makeover and legz got that fucking horrible purple suit. otis/young wicked….. is just a dude. theres not paint, no gimmick. he’s just an artist. and incredibly fucking talented one too.

Slaughter is dope btw. ive listened about 5 times too. im thinking to cop it next week.

“THE WIICKED CLOWNS WILL NEVER DIIIIIE!!!!” on a track?

I kinda get both sides of the arguement here. I do agree gimmicks, especially on Psychopathic, are overdone. It hasn’t helped ABK, Boondox, Hoodoo, Blaze see anymore records. I don’t think it’s even done anything for Twiztid really, maybe in the beginning to get people’s attention but that’s it. On the other hand, ICP doesn’t have the success they’ve had, doesn’t build this huge movement and probably doesn’t even get heard outside of Detroit if not for their gimmick. As for Young Wicked/AMB, he/they don’t need any more gimmick than they already have. I know people have always considered Twiztid ICP’s proteges but I think it’s AMB much moreso. Twiztid back in the day was doing their own thing as HOK and actually had a small rivalry with ICP in Detroit early on before eventually opening shows for ICP. With AMB, they’ve always been THE juggalo rap group. I think that’s their gimmick more than anything, that they are, in a way, the offspring of the dark carnival. They’re fans, juggalos, just like all of us who happened to make it as musicians themselves and are now sharing the stage with their idols.

Btw, I agree with whoever said this might be underground album of the year. It’s really impressive.

“Nothing passionate to express?” Whate about the song “Gone” or “YWG”?

In my opinion Young Wicked needs no gimmick. He’s just himself and that is his gimmick so to speak.

I’m glad he’s coming up the way that he is. He doesn’t need to wear paint. Buuuuuttt…. Hoodoo is awesome with the paint. Would never want him to be Dubbla again because who doe dubbla is doesn’t reach me the way big hoodoo does. Some horrorcore artists are good with paint, some are better without it.

I think my biggest problem with young wicked is that his music just seems super generic. Like, I checked out a couple songs (not the full album) and I could tell what he has been listening to. It’s like the beat for juggalo party. It’s so transparently “my version of ________” where the blank is some whack radio song.

There’s no subtly or artistry to it. He has most of the technical skills (but I hate hearing him gasp for breath when he raps line wtf) but it just doesn’t spark.

He doesn’t need a gimmick and if he wants to be a radio rapper then that’s cool I guess but like don’t be so generic and obvious.
