The Magic Behind Dark Lotus "Tales From The Lotus Pod"

i remembered when Violent J spoke on the recording sessions for Tales From The Lotus Pod and the black magic behind it..

it took a lot of searching to find this...when he said that, it made me really want the album when it was released

Violent J adds this...

Before we answer that shit about the Bloody Brothers and the 6th Jokers Card, I want to talk a li’l bit about the Dark Lotus record. I’m serious, yall. It’s fuckin’ scary. It contains REAL black magic. I’m talkin’ the real deal. Many of the songs on this album were recorded by candle light with garlic stems hanging above us. We followed the books exactly. Many times while we were reciting the albums lyrics, the temperature in the studio would drop below freezing. I’m telling you that many of the lyrics on "Tales of the Lotus Pod" are taken straight from real books of Black Magic.

It all started with these authentic books of Black Magic that we got from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. No we didn’t go all the way there to get them or anything, but my brother (Jump Steady) was there years ago. He was in the Army and he was stationed deep in the dessert. He found the books and he brought them back for us. We dug into these books and cast real shit in the music! The album contains real spells and hexes. It’s the Dark Carnival expressed so hard you’ll feel it. Yo, recording this album was really, REALLY fuckin’ crazy.

I can’t front, though, we kind of got mad scared when all types of crazy shit started happening to us. I woke up one night with a faceless woman floating above my bed. I was so shook I couldn’t move. My dogs and I just laid there watching the spirit until it faded away. Another crazy point was when I woke up with a black crow in my fuckin’ bedroom. We had to call an animal ninja to come get it out! After a few things like that happened, we decided to change a few lyrics. Too much is too much! So we finally went back into the studio and changed some of the lyrics just a tiny bit so that Juggalos everywhere wouldn’t be getting haunted by wicked spirits just for singing the words. We changed some shit but hardly any. It’s almost exact by the book. But everybody should be okay... I hope. Be careful while you’re singing along to that album in your car because you have no idea what you might call up from the beyond.

Now listin‘... If you think this is a joke then fuck it. It might as well be. Just know this.… We already know that the album is going to sell no matter what. Juggalos are going to buy it everywhere no matter what. So don’t think we’re just making this black magic shit up. We’re telling you to be warned. because the album is definitely the wickedest shit we’ve done thus far. Not wicked as in cussing and being a badass, I mean wicked as in legit, REAL BLACK MAGIC. Take my warning for what it’s worth, y’all. At least now I can’t say I never warned you.

.that album is str8 up some of the most dark and evil music from The Psychopathic Catalog, "headache", "the crows", "black magic" even shit like "It" and "hurt yourself" are ruthless. yes there are comedy songs and thats kind of created tension between violent J and mike e clark. mike clark did the track "black magic" and wanted the whole album 2 be like that, just a dark record of icp and twiztid together. but when they get 2gether in the studio they like 2 have fun, so they made shit like "bitch im sexy", "and we danced". mike P finished up the rest

dude this is fuckin awesome. Lotus is what got me into hip-hop as a whole. Espessially this album. I always felt it was a mix between Shangri-la and Hell's Pit. I mean, its all fuckin dark, but i feel some songs are a bit lighter(but not by much). Anything else of this nature would be appreciated. Oh, and my favorite track on this album is probably Hurt Myself and/or Cigam Kcalb. thanks dawg!

Black rain was a drastic disappointment with a few good songs, the walls is great but that death don't want you was way too cheesy.

dark lotus is the ultimate psychopathic record. if i was stuck with only one cd out of the catalog, gimme tales from the lotus with Marz. its wicked, theres comedy, all that classic psychopathic style we love.

its so weird that tales from the lotus is considered to be some of their best work ever and violent j doesnt like it, thats crazy. its the ultimate wicked shit album, they dont even talk about killin people that much and its still more wicked than anything they did before cuz the beats are hauting and the songs deal with magic and spirits. its fuckin magical.

they set the bar so high on tales from the lotus, that anything new from dark lotus wasnt gonna top it.

i cant find the realjuggalos interview where monoxide speaks on how he felt about marz after they kicked him out.

found a recent marz interview

Do you ever listen to Dark Lotus' "Tale from the Lotus Pod" CD?

No. Before I hooked up with them, I never listened to the horrorcore. I never do and I never have since. When we were doing the album, to me it was something unique because I had never heard it. When I did my part, I felt like I brought what I needed to bring with that thing and I moved on past it. I don't feel too comfortable rapping or singing or anything about (stuff) that's not real. I'm way more into writing real experience (stuff) about what's happening in my own life or things that I've been through. I ain't never chopped nobody's head off. If someone pushed me, I could. But I can't rap about that. It doesn't feel good to me. The Dark Lotus (album) was mad fun, but I couldn't just keep doing that. I couldn't do more than one album like that or base my career on it. That's just not me.

MARZ: Well, I think one of the main differences is the fact that we did real spells in a lot of the songs, you know what I'm saying. Like real shit, not just talking about it, like it's the actually spells. So it's weird. When you listen to this stuff you can feel that there is something going on. It's hard to explain but when you hear it, it just feels like there is little rumblings happening in the under world.

Lotus Pod with Marz is a fucking classic. Nearly all the right cylinders. I dunno why the other 5 wanted Vampiro in the Lotus (Maniac Killa is the only song I've heard him on). Maybe he would've brought something else to the table, fuck if I know. Myzery would've been just as good, if not better, than Marz though if he stuck around.

Lol i never knew why during the bizarr / freekshow era they wanted Vampiro in the group, he doesnt even rap...

Esham would have been a good fit as a member cuz he was still kickin really good music like the "tongues" album....esham was kicked out cuz blaze got his spot, and blaze had some of his best verses on that dark lotus album "ali baba" he is str8 up flowin!! and "call upon your gods" blaze kept that shit gangsta as fuck!

and marz was an essential part of the whole albums "darkness" and black magic feel to it. when u play that cd, it feels like something is evil in the air, u can feel it in your bones. its the wickedest album ever. hands down. i always thought the 6th jokers card would give me that feeling, but shagri la was an uplifting record and was special, but this album is the wicked shit. i still dont listen to "the crows" alone after havin a bad shroom trip to that song on headphones, that wasnt a good idea.

the choruses and hooks on tales from the lotus feel like black magic chants and spells which marz and violent J were crazy enough to use it in music and thats wat was missing on "Black rain" and that disaterous "opaque brotherhood". black rain had some really really good songs, and some really bad ones cuz of the choices of beats and they didnt go for the black magic style, it was just a collaboration album with the label at the time. and opaque brotherhood is fuckin monotone as hell. deep voices, deep basslines and empty music not giving any track personality. the song titles looked good and then i played them and was seriously let down.

anyone know the official album credits / song titles from "tales from the lotus". i remember one was called "mah jeh mah" wtf does that mean?????

tales is good but black rain is better. And opaque wasn't bad either. I can't see how you say it has no personality. "Can you keep a secret" "Backwards"  are two of my favorite songs from any lotus cd along with "Black crows" "I Wanna Die" "My First Time" and "Pass The Axe"
