Y'all are too damn funny!  Claiming to be fans of something that you're constantly hating on.  This is why I distanced myself from the juggalo community 8 or so years ago.  Don't get me wrong, been down 19 years and still am, love the music, but just don't "get" most juggalos (at least the online ones).  People saying Psy should just let Dubbla do Dubbla and Psy should get rid of the gimmicks.  Really?  Is today the first day you listened to ICP or anything on Psychopathic?  Psy has allowed artists to do their own thing before (Myzery for example) and juggalos say it's boring and don't buy the shit.  The only artists that have ever had any success on Psy are ones with gimmicks (ICP, Twiztid, Blaze).  That's what Psy is and they market the shit out of that and if you still fail to see that then you've got your head up your ass.  I'd imagine artists who sign with Psy realize this going in and they themselves are looking for a way to market themselves and give themselves something to set them apart from the norm.  Violent "Gay" (as someone here put it) has never held a gun to the back of someone's head and forced them to sign a deal.  That's what's so damn funny about it, juggalos hate on the gimmicks but then have no interest in buying it without the gimmicks.

Just finished my first listen to the full album. Kinda disappointed that Hexed ended up being the best track, if only because it was the first thing we heard from him and basically nothing else quite got to that point. Also disappointed that Hexed was the only track that really felt like it explored the spell slinging voodoo wicked shit concept, I mean yeah it came up a bit on some of the other tracks but I was expecting human sacrifices, zombification, killing/dismembering people with spells and the like. Southwest Voodoo had more going on than this entire album. On that note I'd love to hear a Big Hoodoo cover of Southwest Voodoo.

So yeah, the album was pretty good though. I think it did fail to live up to my personal hype level for it, and I feel Boondox had a stronger debut on the label than Dubbla did here. I have to agree with those saying that Violent J is on way too many tracks to the detriment of the experience. You're introducing an artist to us, let us get to know them. Boondox had far more solo material on The harvest than Hoodoo has on Crystal Skull and that kinda sucks.

I may get around to doing a track by track review once I get a bit more familiar with the material, as it is everything is a bit too fresh for me to form any solid opinion on. Gotta agree with the seeming consensus that Spells is the weakest track on the album.

What the hell was up with the message at the end of The World is Very Different? That was...odd.

Yeah, same. There were a few alright tracks, that one remains at the top of the shit pile though. I liked My Homie, and Mountain Climbing was okay. Beyond that, the choruses basically ruined every song. I wouldn't recommend the album.

People saying Psy should just let Dubbla do Dubbla and Psy should get rid of the gimmicks.  Really?  Is today the first day you listened to ICP or anything on Psychopathic?

obviously people want icp to stay icp but it wouldnt hurt if they did more non gimmick shit

The only artists that have ever had any success on Psy are ones with gimmicks (ICP, Twiztid, Blaze).

not one gimmick-less artist has gotten the opportunity to stick around for more than one album tho no one on psy was successful after their 1st album.. actually the only one who got 2 albums Esham, was kinda successful.. definitely as much as blaze was 2 albums in..

juggalos hate on the gimmicks but then have no interest in buying it without the gimmicks.

lol i dont think you can speak for everyone with saying that.. im only interested in buying music i deem as great.. whether or not it has a gimmick has nothing to do with my purchase nor do i hate on it if it does..

I agree 100% with ins....so many so called "juggalos" talk nun but shit on their own culture.  its pathetic really. I also notice that the shittallkers on the internet are not the cool ass ninjas u meet and kick it with at shows. thers more then a few on here but what's the point in naming names when everyone knows who they r already. u don't like big hoodoo?  cool but to go outta ur way to come up with conspiracy theories on how j ruins everything is comical to me.

J is a mastermind and if he didn't know what he was doing icp wouldn't exist for 20 yrs. not everything someone touches turns to gold. but not everything is shit either.

I'm a juggalo who's been down for 15 yrs now. I'm a hip hop head/ metal fan...but a lover of music in general. I still love the majority of shit psy puts out but not everything is for everyone.

If your hating on everything psychopathic is doing...then do all the real los a favour n fuck off n stop listening to/writing about shit you hate.

go get laid.

So I will say I dig this album. My favorite songs are Give It Life, Mountain Climbing, Crystal Skull, The Jinx, Detroit Murderous, and The World Is Very Different.

Now, here's my problem. I DL'ed the album, but I want to support an artist I like and buy it. So I said, "Hey, isn't HG doing 44% off?" "Fuckin right I'll get if from there." I get to checkout with $5.60 as a total. I'm thinking cool, $2-3 for shipping and I'm out the door. Fuckin $9.20 for shipping cause they're still making you get the stupid fuckin poster! I thought that was pre-order only?

Guess I'll stick with the DL. Your loss PSY. I know this is discussed in another thread, but damn.

I already copped this shit cause I was buying a fuck load of other psychopathic shit so the shipping price wasn't an issue... 5.60 for it, fuck it. With that said almost all the way through this and it's good, nothing amazing but I'm sure it will grow on me more. On another note, anyone know who produced the tracks? Mike E. Clark?

Horndog Blog: Big Hoodoo "Crystal Skull" Review

bighoodoo.jpeg

What up, y'all? Welcome to the debut of the HORNDOG BLOG, which will replace the former "News" section of the site.

You'll still be kept up to date with Mystic Studios Productions comic books, CDs, videos and other upcoming projects, but I'll also take the time to give personal advice, review non-MSP releases that I dig, and let you explore The Mind of a Horndog.

The difference between the Horndog Blog and the former News section is that the News section was a collaboration written by Mystic Studios Productions employees, whereas the Horndog Blog will be solely written by me.

Detroit rapper Doe Dubbla makes his Psychopathic Records debut by unveiling his alter-ego, Big Hoodoo, the West African Black Majik equivalent of what Slim Shady served for Eminem, and the Wicked Clowns serve for Psychopathic labelmates Insane Clown Posse. This album comes at a good time for Psychopathic, whose Juggalo fanbase hasn’t exactly embraced Psychopathic’s non-horrorcore projects like Cold 187’s concept mixtape The Only Solution and Legz Diamond’s non-rap, gangster-themed album 9 Pistolas, and the departure of much-loved Juggalo favorites Twiztid.

Big Hoodoo’s lyrics, which cross horror movie fantasy themes with Detroit street content, should prove a welcome return to basics for Psychopathic Records. The idea of a voodoo master running the streets of Detroit recalls ICP’s 1997 song “Southwest Voodoo”. Doe Dubbla ties his lyrics into Psychopathic’s mythology by referencing “The Wraith” (the embodiment of The Grim Reaper/Death in ICP’s mythology), and the concept of "Give It Life" recalls the ICP classic "Mad Professor", but also touches upon the healing aspects asserted by real-life voodoo practitioners, which is often ignored in the form of Hollywood Voodoo that formed the basis for the album's lyrical themes. (Disclaimer: I do not believe in voodoo. I am an atheist.)

Juggalos should dig the crazy-murderer themes of the title track, which refers to going on a killing spree while drinking out of a skull with supernatural qualities, as well as the more personal, introspective “Never Had”, which discusses drug-addicted moms and the shittier aspects of being poor. While ICP pops up on two tracks, one of which features legendary Detroit rapper Awesome Dre, the focus is mostly on Big Hoodoo’s skills as a rapper and lyricist, though he is partially assisted by ICP’s Violent J, except on the tracks “Darkside” and “Detroit Murderous”, which are solely written by Doe Dubbla.

The musical direction of Crystal Skull is driven by producer Brian Kuma, but the big production surprise of the album is the two tracks produced by Above The Law’s Cold 187um (“Crystal Skull” and “Happily Ever After”), whose production skills were absent on The Only Solution, which consisted of Hutch contributing new raps to classic Psychopathic beats. The standout production of Crystal Skull occurs in Brian Kuma’s work on “Hexed” and “Blitzed”, the Mike E. Clark-assisted “Never Had”, and the Cold 187um-produced title track, while the best lyrical content on the album is the introspective, personal approach to “Never Had”. The combination of Big Hoodoo’s concept, music and lyrical approach make this one of the most exciting debuts from Detroit rap’s equivalent of Arkham Asylum since Boondox dropped The Harvest in 2006, and Hoodoo should take his place among Juggalo favorites like ABK and Blaze Ya Dead Homie in the years to come.

Ok so i DL it and listening to it. And i gotta say i love it. Its what i wanted. I hope i get to hear and see him around for a long time.

I want to see some collabs with Blaze, ABK, Boondox. They could really do some wicked shit.

And i gotta say i'm kinda pissed. I'm not one to download a new release from Psychopathic. I'll wait til its in the stores even if I can download it a day earlier or more.  But I pre-order my album and it didn't fucking come!! I'm kinda pissed. It's ok tho if i have to i'll still go buy it at the store too.

I had to hear it today tho so i DL it..  Good Work Big HooDoo. Juggalo 4 Life

ive had the album for a few days but havent been able to sit and listen to it cover to cover until this morning when ihad to take a trip out to a site so i got 2 playthroughs down.

Personally i loved it. no its not overly technical, no its not very representative of doe dubblas technical skills but it does fit. he plays it off well and for his first foray into wicked shit i have to say its the best psy debut album ive heard in a while. the beats were dope as fucking fuckity fuck, the lyrcis, although they screamed VJ, if it wasnt dubbla doing it, it would come off as tacky cheap and mildly racist.

I could ahve done without the 2 feature tracks adn VJ on every god damned hook, but it doesnt spoil the album for me.

i just hope they dont sit on dubble for another 3 - 4 years before we get antoher release adn i imagine that they will give him a bit more freedom to do his own shit in time.

7/10 for me.

on top of that, even though im not a fan of how much control VJ takes away from artists signed to the label, you can't deny he knows how to fit a gimmick to an artist.
