Working my way through the fantastic audio book. Is it me, or is J leaving a few minor things out here and there that appeared in the text? Like, in the Carnival of Carnage section, there’s no mention of it only selling 17 copies on release day. It jumps right to J saying they sold 4000 units in some referenced span of time.

No big deal, especially since he’s adding stuff that’s not in the book. Just wondering…

Welp, I was looking forward to buying it from Hatchetgear when it became available, however considering that the shipping to the UK is $31, it doesn’t really seem like it should be that much.

I would buy it off Ebay, but the one I saw on there is $64 + another $18 for shipping :/

Insanity! I’m hoping amazon or somewhere starts stocking it soon.

Just heard the part where J talks about trying to do a moonsault off of the speakers at a show but slipped and fell in between the speaker and the barricade. Then the paramedics came and had to cut his shirt off and he went on about how nobody sees him with his shirt off and he even fucks bitches with his shirt on, which I think he’s mentioned before. Then he said Otis has actually seen him shirtless. So…what!?

Ordered it on HG and finally got my order confirmation.  Now I wait to see how long until it ships.  If it takes longer than a few days, I will never shop at HG again.

So is the audio book just a big mp3 file on the USB drive?  Also if anyone has an mp3 of it, I’d love a link so I can start listening while I wait…

I thought the exact same thing actually. I couldn’t remember if he said it later in the book though and I’m up to Chapter 24 now, still no mention. Also, did he discuss the thing about Alex threatening Disney to bring the Juggalos to burn down Disney World in the book? I thought he did, but it wasn’t there at all in the audio. I tried to flip through the book and find it but that got old quick.

I could have swore that the 17 copies reference came from the 2002 seminar and not the book but I could be wrong. Also when looking at it on a computer, the total run time is 23 1/2 hours. Where they got approx. 30hrs or 30+ hrs is beyond me

Well holy shit…you’re right! I just took them saying 30+ hours as gospel…which is funny because I don’t believe in that either. lol.

Still, don’t let that take away from the experience.  After you get past the first few chapters where J seems to be getting comfortable, it’s a breeze to sit through and get lost in. It’s over before you know it.

Yeah he seemed a little different the first few chapters but then seems to get in the groove of things and it just cruises along. Finished it on the ride home from the gathering but still had like 3 states to go but it made the first day and a half drive fly by!

Just made it to Chapter 16. I don’t know about anyone else but I find Shaggy’s voice to be very relaxing for some reason.

I hope he gives his future book the audio treatment; take that shit with me to the massage parlor.

ive listened to the first couple chapters.

its good, but in the end, its just j reading the book.  ive already read the book twice.  since i know js voice, i read it in js voice.  and since i read faster than j talks, it didnt take anywhere near 24 hours to finish it.

what im sayin is, its a rerun of a rerun, to me.  especially seein as how theres apparently no new material.  im about two hundred hours behind on music that im supposed to be checkin out as it is, no tellin how long its gonna take for me to get through this.

  awfully paranoid, arent you?

for the record, there is new stuff, it’s just little side bits and anecdotes. And supposedly a hells pit chapter. We listened to it a bit in the car on the ride home and at first it was kinda hard to stay away with j who sounded sleepy as hell but once he got into it, we got into it more.

A few times in what we heard he was like “this isn’t in the book, but” and then tells a little story like when they got run outta some town for showing up during a football game or somethin.

If you really believed that all lives matter we wouldn't need to say black lives matter

No matter how I feel about ICP or juggalos in general, this book will always be a great and inspiring book in my eyes.

Ya know what *I think explains the way J was talking in the first few chapters as compared to the rest…?

The weight loss.

He must have started recording this thing about a year or more ago (not that I think it was done chronologically) and a few chapters in, I really thought he literally seemed “weighed down”. Not just by the subject matter but his chubby jowly cheeks draggin’ his vowels down n’shit.

I never got the opportunity to READ the hardcover and since it was published, many a ninja has filled me in on the tales told in it, so it was still familiar territory. But Violent J is an AMAZING storyteller! For all his bullshit about being stupid and not knowing things, he can spin a fuckin’ yarn to be sure! And when he starts using that, “Can you believe this shit?!” voice while telling his OWN stories… entertaining as FUCK!

I like hearing him laugh at stuff he thinks is funny and getting mad at shit that pissed him off. You can’t put that on a page.

I know that the overall gist of the book is to explain the creation of the Six Joker’s Cards, throw in some tour stories and side pieces… but there seems to be some gaps in “the story”. Correct me if I’m wrong, he never got into how Blaze and ABK got hooked up into Psychopathic? He talks on the HoK and the R.O.C., MENTIONS Blaze and ABK but never really gets into how they all ended up together. He also doesn’t ever go into any of the other things I would have liked to have known more about involving their internet and video endeavors (the Weekly Freekly Weekly’s, Shaggy Show’s and the like).

The recording itself: Meh…?  I was expecting a bit more of the ambient audio landscape they kept telling us about but just hearing J, Shaggy and Jumpsteady telling their stories would have been enough for me. Also… I can pretty much hear every cut and edit. And again, I’m sure trying to cut one of J’s stories down or trying to get him to recreate a certain tone of voice from an ADR session from few weeks before can be tricky.

Is there a reason I am unaware of that he always pronounces Disney, “Diz-un-knee”? Probably just to irk ’em.

One thing that I felt comes across as a little hypocritical in the face of his motivationals is the general glossing over of the fact that while they MOST DEFINITELY busted their asses getting their come up… they were still kinda doing shady shit to fund it all; like his stealing radios and using “bitches” to pay for shit… All that positive upward mobility is all well n’ good but if applied to most other people, the story would have ended when they wouldn’t/couldn’t go out and commit a few crimes (however forgivable). Just sayin’. Fuck, look where it got ’em!.

For some reason I thought the whole thing was supposed to be 17hrs or something. The way *I listened to it, I guess I didn’t notice how long it was playing (or maybe J is just that entertaining a storyteller).

Loved it! It’s got a few rough edges but who the fuck cares? Can’t wait for the second book but we’ll get Shaggy’s LONG before then and I’m stoked on that shit too!

The 17 copies reference was def in that seminar, but I could have sworn it was in the book as well. I’ll take a look when I get home.

I look at it as a companion to the book. No actual new material, but good side notes IMO that were not in the book. Especially as it gets into the later chapters and J really starts paraphrasing and adding his own twist.

I still have not gotten through one listen and I’d say I’ve averaged about 1/2hr a day since GOTJ ended.

I have officially finished the audiobook. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, at right about exactly the same time I got the audio book is when I got in touch with the person who borrowed the book from the person who borrowed the book from me over 10 years ago who sent me a copy after all these years since they couldn’t let go of the one they got from me. What an awesome time to get it and listen to while my wife reads the paper copy as she is just recently starting to get more into ICP. The audio version was great and really touched on a lot of emotions. His additional rants and laughter really cracked me up. It absolutely cracks me up that he pronounces Disney like “Diz-uh-nee” like Cheshyr said. I really think that’s just how he says it, he fucks up a lot of words actually. But you’d think something that famous in addition to being a huge signficiant thing in his life would make it to where he’d know how to pronounce it. He also says the word pamphlet without the “h” like “pamplet”. That had me dying. The bonus chapter was fun, nothing too revealing but still entertaining. I look forward to whenever he puts out the next book.

That being said, this is the first time I ever listened to an audiobook. I loved it. I listened to it to and from work, while working out, walking, everywhere. I want to get more into that sort of thing. Anybody listen to any cool podcasts they would recommend? Preferably something sci-fi or horror but I’d be interested in hearing about whatever you dig.

I firmly committed myself to not starting to listen unless I could finish a whole chapter (however long but mostly at least an hour).

His stories are so coiled up that I felt like if I jumped out in the middle of a thought, I’d end up having to rewind a bit just to get back into the swing of the tale he was telling.

If I get your meaning, I would recommend to ANYone that likes this kind of thing, check out the BBC Radio’s “official” reading/show of the entire “Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy” series. If you’ve read the books it’s almost word-for-word, and if you’ve done neither, it’s that much more awesome and hilarious. The voice of the narrator/”The Book” alone is great to hear.

As far as fun Podcasts… I recommend “Doug Loves Movies” and “Getting Doug With High” (ICP was said to have supposed to have been on the Getting Doug With High live stream but because of Shaggy’s probation mix-up a while back, it got scrubbed).

I stand corrected. No mention of the 17 copies of COC on opening day in the book. Just that there were nine ninjas waiting in line for the record store to open.

I however, was not one of those nine ninjas. Too busy learning how to not shit my pants at the fresh age of 2. Had I had that shit under control, you best believe I would have been there.
