There’s a ton of misunderstandings of dyslexia so I don’t really blame you for getting it wrong. It’s actually less common to find people who know what it’s like.

Yep, Just me attempting a joke, unsuccessfully.

I had issues with dyslexia when I was young. I had to read with my finger on the page and hit every word or the letters would jumble in my head. It’s called Attentional Dyslexia. It usually affects children. An Attentional Dyslexic can “identify letters correctly, but the letters jump between words on the page. ‘kind wing’ would be read as ‘wind king.’ The substitutions are not caused by an inability to identify letters or convert them to sounds, but instead result from the migration of letters between words.”

Dyslexia is a spectrum disorder with different variations, though some psychologists state that there is only one true dyslexia and the everything else are variations of cognition defects. The most common “form” is phonological dyslexia with almost 80% falling into this category.

Anyway, my dog – god joke failed miserably. Maybe I have that rare disorder, witzelsucht.

@robtidwell Shit, there seems to be some picking at your brain so I’m going to jump in on that too. If it’s getting old tell me to fuck off. It doesn’t seem like a touchy subject to you and this popped in my head as soon as you described dyslexia. Have you heard about this? http://www.dyslexiefont.com/en…..exia-font/

The tldr is that it’s a font that makes each letter completely unique. Meaning a d, b, p, & q aren’t just flipped and mirrored versions of the other. Every letter like that (I’m sure there’s a word for that but I don’t know it) is bent in a specific way to differentiate between them. In theory, that makes sense to me but does it really make sense or is it just bullshit that wouldn’t really work?

ill reserve comment for now, though, see what rob gots to say about it.

should maybe start a dyslexia thread.  i know theres a few others in the forum with dyslexia.

Not completely related, but somewhat, I have disgraphia. To the point where I had years of therapy for my handwriting and it still looks like complete shit. My teacher told me I wasn’t going to graduate high school my handwriting was so bad. Thank science for computers, eh?

what a twat.  guarantee teacher aint sayin that shit now.

had a teacher that used to grief me excessively about cursive script.  insisted that i needed to have much better skills, cuz that was the way id be expected to write almost everything as an adult.

now that we are in the future, jokes on that bitch!  nobody gives a shit about script, now.

So I can be reading a book and trudging through it and then it might randomly describe a dog with the word dog and when I look at it I’m seeing dog but my brain is stuck in a loop of wtf does dog mean oh my god this is such a weird word where the fuck did it come from why don’t I know it are there two syllables? is it duh ogg or is it doog or I can’t figure this out… oh it’s dog like my dog got it.

this shit here is real tough to explain to someone that hasnt experienced it, but i grasp it on an instinctive level.

when i was a wee lad, there was some talk bandied about that i might be dyslexic.  even today i disagree with that conclusion…

except, that this phenomenon did happen to me now and again.  some random word [usually a fairly common one], would just suddenly seem like the weirdest, dumbest, most out-of-place word id ever seen.  then later, it fits right in, like its supposed to.

ive discussed this effect [theres a name for it, but for the life of me, i cant remember what it is] with many heads over the years, and while not everyone noticed it, a surprisingly sizable chunk of the population has.  the vast majority are not at all what we would call dyslexic.

this hasnt happened to me for… probably at least twenty years.  my own theory on that, is that when you are mildly dyslexic, perhaps it just goes away.  could be that the more you read, the less it affects you…  could be that your mind gets so used to it, that you dont notice it anymore.  could be that children are prone to it when they start to read, but grow out of it and forget, but some dont.

for a severe dyslexic, its like letters, or even entire words or sentences, are randomly written in cyrillic.

imagine if the above paragraph looked like this:

typical dyslexia
this hasnt happλned to me for… probably at leςÞt twenty years.  my own theory on thεt, is thεt when you are mildly dyslexic, perhaps ît just goes away.  could be thεt the more you reϖd, the less ît affects you…  could be thεt your mind gets so used to ît, thεt you dont notice ît aπγΩore.  could be thεt children are prone to ît when they start to reϖd, and usually grow out of ît and forget, but soψe doηt.

severe dyslexia
это hasnt случилось to мной заr … probably, по крайней мере двадцать yеars. мy own теория on томt, что, is, что, когда are слегка дислексией, возможно, он just goes уходит. could быть, что чем больше more читаете, тем less он влияет на вас … может быть, что mind gets становится used к нему, что you не notice его больше. может быть, что that склонны к нему, когда они grow читать, но растут из него и забыть, но некоторые не делают.

thats dyslexia in a nutshell, for those who never had to deal with it.

[edit]

okay, just now, i noticed that the word ‘typical’ is just a funny-looking, odd word.

typical

when you fixate on it, the effect is more noticeable.

typical

try it, look at the word, and dont let your mind immediately accept the meaning.  just the way it looks.

typical

the more you dwell on the appearance of it, the less natural it feels.  thats why you cant tell a dyslexic to ‘just concentrate harder’.  it works against them.

i think comic books help with this, honestly.  the mind is spending time interpreting the form of the artwork, and is consequently more free to assimilate the content of the words, without hangin up on the form of the lettering.

again, just my theory.  well, not just mine, but the head shrinkers dont all agree, on that one.

this also would explain why visual artists are sometimes prone to dyslexia-like symptoms, when reading prose.

My dyslexia is mild, yes. It’s worse when my stress levels are higher but I learned to read really late and learned to work around my dyslexia and develop past certain parts.

I know what you’re trying to say with the cryllic thing but that’s the kind of dialog that leads to misunderstandings. Dyslexia is a processing disorder, so the words don’t -look- different, they’re just hard to process as if they were different. For more severe dyslexics, it can be like what I described with words but with letters but it’s most commonly syllables.

Dyslexia is said to be one of the widest spread undiagnosed learning disabilities and exists on a spectrum. The cause is that the nuerons in the brain that communicate written words goes through the spatial part of the brain first rather than the language part and so you’re looking at the shapes of the letters and trying to understand their meanings. Usually, combinations of letters and syllables are the thing that trips us up but not always. When I was in grade school, my teachers forever got mad at me because we would clap out words to find how many syllables they had and I’d almost always be wrong because I couldn’t process where the syllables were by sight. Even in hearing them it’s hard, though I’ve learned to listen for tells rather than for letter groupings.

An interesting thing happened with a friend of mine and I at a museum. My friend has a masters is slavic languages and has studied language her whole life. Anyway, so we’re looking at this piece in LACMA and there’s all these holes that are marked in an irregular pattern and I laughed and said they looked like a language because I didn’t understand them and she looked at them a while, took some photos and came back to me with information that they were actually markings from an ancient language. It basically read like reverse braille where a knife like tool would puncture stone and in patterns that would be read as words.

That’s just a weird aside where dyslexia was beneficial to me.

Also, I agree about comics. I think comics are fantastic for people with reading disabilities of all sorts.

I have heard of the font and don’t use it. My dyslexia isn’t so severe that I can’t recognize letters so changing the shapes of the letters wouldn’t help me. I’m not sure if it would help others or not because the actual problem is how information travels in the brain and having slightly more distinct letters isn’t going to speed that up or change where information goes in our brains, but it may help keep things in tact as they travel. I don’t know.

yes indeed.

thats the example i use on people who cant relate, so that they can experience the impact of dyslexia, since they will probably never understand the mechanics of it, no matter how long i explain it.  shit, i dont think i really understand the mechanics of it, honestly.

if they misunderstand, perhaps they arent as free of learning disorders as they think…

now you got me interested and i got a question about that( @robtidwell ) is it only an issue when trying to read something? like if someone read it out loud you would instantly get the meaning and all is good?

nobody ever explains these things thoroughly it’s like it’s taboo to talk about and your supposed to know what it is. and if you ask a question they just tiptoe around it like their going to offend somebody. it’s really annoying cause i wan’t to know, some times i feel like i’m the only one who doesn’t cause every one acts like they know.

I don’t generally have a problem processing spoken language but I wouldn’t say it’s only a problem with reading. Sometimes it’s a problem with recognition or with other kinds of visual “language” like I’ve literally stopped my car at green lights before because I couldn’t figure out what the color green meant and I’ve had to look at what other drivers were doing to navigate other traffic signs. Driving, especially when I don’t know where I’m going, is exhausting because I have to “read” a whole lot of stuff that most people don’t have a problem with.

It’s definitely about decoding through vision though. I think it’s something to do with the way our brains process vision as opposed to hearing or other sense but I don’t know any science on it. It’s also a two way street. Spelling is really difficult, my writing is extremely sloppy and sometimes I’ll write something that isn’t a letter at all but while I’m writing what I mean to write, my brain gets jumbled and things get lost in processing.

derailed by dyslexia.

there are some [admittedly more fiery] threads about god and such.  think we kinda burned out on the topic, recently.

i did briefly lobby for dyslexia to have its own thread, but nobody noticed.

i was really enjoying learning and trying to wrap my head around an idea/concept that i apparently knew nothing about XD

it’s just that there is NO answer when it comes to god talks, just opinions, nothing to really learn.
