Hey guys! My bf and I have decided to make the drive to Ohio from Kentucky this year. It’ll be the first time for both of us and I just had a couple of questions. How many days should I request off from work? I put in today to have the 21st-25th off just to give myself a day to prepare & pack everything, but should I have an extra day after I get back set up to recover? I’ve looked over the other threads that provided quality advice (camping toilet, dry ice,etc..) that we wouldn’t have thought of otherwise but is there any advice centric to the new location that y’all could offer to a couple of GOTJ virgins? Thanks!

I gave myself a couple extra days to pack last year (me and my son’s first), and wished I’d given myself time to recover instead. The Gathering Flu© may sound like a joke, but I assure you, it ain’t. Based on what you mention, I’ll assume you checked @verytwiztidraven ‘s advice, which is very likely the best to follow.

Aside from a couple luxuries last year (a few Candy Apple and Cotton Candy Faygos, a little vendor food), the only expense I had last year was buying one bag of ice – so you can go without spending a dime, if you plan/pack well enough. I don’t advise it though, I feel as if I missed out on some stuff by being a cheapskate.

Location-centric advice? Only one pops into my mind… Either disregard any interest you have in wrestling, or start hiking today to prepare for the hill.

My husband & I have been to the past few Gatherings and we take a day off afterwards to recharge. Four days of hiking in the sun and getting compressed in the pit can take its toll.

if at all possible, i highly recommend.

bring trash bags.  put trash in them.

that may seem obvious, but its not.  it really does need to be spelled out.  often.

and dont throw anything heavy, if im around.  i reacted very badly to that wack shit last year, and put a couple marks on people for it.

Allow me to emphasize that. I’d really rather not sit on him again to calm him down.

I bet 15 year Gathering veterans have amazing immune systems, imagine how many viruses their bodies have fought off lol. They probably swam in lake hepatitis before it was lake hepatitis.

Seriously though, The Gathering Flu is real, and it fucking sucks. @chieflocc I forgot to tell you that (also, my phone’s broken so just pm me on here if you wanna reach me, I guess?).

You can buy the ice right down the street, too. There’s a gas station, you’re not gonna be out in the middle of nowhere like hogrock was.

Maybe just don’t throw heavy shit at all, it’s kind of dickish. Also don’t throw fireworks into the crowd…

Oh, and don’t accidentally spray faygo in someone’s weed, right, @carnivalkilla44 ?

I’ve been to the last four Gatherings, and ended up calling in to work the day after I got home twice (once because I was SO sick and injured, and once because I was just totally exhausted). I don’t like wasting my vacation days, so I try to soldier through and not call in, but if I’ve gotta, I’ve gotta. Also, are you working on Sunday the 26th, or do you have off? Keep in mind that the party will probably keep going all night on Saturday night (scheduled performances and random stuff). You can always pack up and leave any time you like, but it would be nice to have the Sunday off as well so you can pack up and drive home that day. The drive home sucks, BTW, no matter how many hours you have to drive home. You’re exhausted, dirty, probably hungry, probably some degree of sick or injured, maybe coming down off of a substance, likely coming down off of the high of just BEING at the Gathering…and then you’ve gotta just stare at the highway for hours on end. It sucks, so keep that in mind.

i find that when i know i have that extra day off, the drive home is easy as shit.

last year, i took my time, stopped often to check out random shit, bumped into tons of juggalos all of the place.  didnt have to eat fast food or gas station snacks, since i wasnt in a rush.

in the end, it only took a lil longer to get home, than it did to drive in, if you count the time waiting around the station for piggs bus to arrive, and hangin at the hotel a minute.

As far as Legend Valley is concerned, when everyone says “comfortable shoes”, this time around they aren’t just talking about shoes for all the walking… we mean hardcore comfortable shoes that you might use to climb up mountains n’shit. This location has rocks that will slip and slide under your feet along almost every pathway and by the end of day two, your big and little toes will feel like they have been cheese grated by your socks and sides of your shoes.

On the camping tip, for as much as you might prepare for any kind of heat, bring some warm blankets too. Last year, a cold front swept in and caught everyone off guard and those of us in tents were freezing our asses off. You never know. “You nevah, nevah know”.

As far as planning things based on the schedule of events you get, be prepared to use that just as a loose guide. Shit never really started on time which bleeds into other shit you might wanna do scheduled after. And in the same vein (vane?), be ready to miss stuff. Even the most hardcore Juggalos are gonna miss some of the stuff they might have wanted to see, if for no other reason than just being too tired (or not wanting to take a hill to see it)…

regarding the JCW Stage, am I crazy or does the map show that there was a gap in the fencing that would have allowed people to get there from the right of the Main Stage rather than walking all the way up to the front gate and back down the hill?

Anyone know if that was reality?

Yep. After the first trip to the wrestling stage, every other trip I made I used the fence gap. Since we were camped within sight of the main stage, it was the easiest path to take.

It’s in the path of the backstage service vehicle entrance, so mind the traffic.

I am a 15 year Gathering vet, and I think my immune system is pretty great.  I’m a generally healthy person though, and have been caught off guard by the “Gathering plague” a few times.  In recent years, I bring a 10 pack of Emergen-C to last the whole time there. I mix it with water and just chug it down every morning.  Airborne is basically the same shit.   It’s only a few bucks, and well worth it IMO.

@piggofdoom You make an excellent point! Lol, I still think about that every once in a while. The first time the poor guy goes to spray his first ever bottle of Faygo it lands in this giant biker dude’s bag of kush.

Be prepared for Juggaloism all day and all night. The adrenaline is gonna keep you awake most of the hours you are there. Be ready for a party.

I was actually gonna start a topic myself regards to this. I went to the gathering last year in Ohio and I had an amazing time. It was my first time going and I wasn’t sure what the camping/shower/shitter situation was like or the cops etc etc et….long story short I got a motel room and drove back and forth each time. While it was convenient I left with so many regrets of not staying there the whole time because I wanted to play it safe. This year I want to camp out but had a few questions I was hoping some gathering veterans could answer.

1) I am not gonna bring my car in(Yes I remember the rocks/hills) and walk to camp out. What is it like when they first allow access to the grounds? total chaos to where I might get ran over or can I actually find a spot

2)If I get there Tuesday night where can I park? I saw the Reno Rydaz doc on last year and saw they where across the street. Is that where everyone goes before?

3)I remember by day 2 the port o pots where nasty so Im gonna bring a pop up tent and a luggable loo to take care of the duece but how are the showers? I don’t mind waiting in line as long as I can get a quick cleaning. Hot water? \

4) What campsite did you guys like or dislike? I was scouting out oddity or kayfabe. Alakazam was closest to the parking lot but kinda looked crammed last year. I don’t mind noise and partying but I don’t want to be in an area that gets nasty face.

Any feedback/info on Legend Valley and camping would be a big plus. I can’t wait for the Gathering this year!!!!

It’s a mad rush from what I heard, I drove in so I do not know from personal experience.

The parking lot party goes on Tuesday night. We actually got there early Tuesday and parked with people camped out beside the grounds. They started moving us in to a temporary holding area in the afternoon.

That’s a good idea. We brought a portable potty last year. It worked great. The showers I hit early in the morning (like 5 to 6 am) and there were no lines and the water was hot.

 4) What campsite did you guys like or dislike? I was scouting out oddity or kayfabe. Alakazam was closest to the parking lot but kinda looked crammed last year. I don’t mind noise and partying but I don’t want to be in an area that gets nasty face.

I can only speak for the one we stayed in. We were in the missing link. Close to The Main Stage, Close to Bizarro World. Close to Showers. Close to Carnival Rides.  We liked it.

I’m either going to look at getting the same site i had last year, which was as soon as you entered the gates on the left (not labeled on map) or Alakazam right outside the gates. Those each were the chillest places on the grounds. I’m one that can party for days straight, but when i want quiet chill time, you’re damn sure I’m getting it.

I was wondering, there was so much space in the outer parking lot where the Tuesday night party goes down. Can you just camp there? I thought i saw a few people doing that.

My camp last year was in Oddity, right at the intersection of the road to the merch booth and the road to the Pendulum stage. It’s a relatively flat, shady spot, and if I hadn’t been in the first 20 vehicles in, I wouldn’t have gotten to camp there. It was, like, jam packed the first second the gates opened.

And what they did last year was let the people going in on foot through the gate first, then they started letting in the vehicles. There was a group of maybe…200? people who ran in (literally) as soon as the gates opened. Showers were fairly clean, but the floors were muddy because the trailers were sitting in an area with ankle deep mud surrounding it. I came out of the shower, and stepped right into mud that came up over my entire foot. What a mess.

It seems like closer to the parking lot/further from the main stage area is more open. I remember they opened that lot on the left. I really left last year regretting not camping there. At least if I get in on foot I can have a head start and plan where I want to be. I know its months away but its something to look forward to. And the parking lot party the night before sounds awesome! It makes me think of the parking lot party at woodstock 99. Definitely gonna leave early to get there for thatcheers_gif. Thanks fam for all the info!
