It's regarded as a slur because it's usually said in a derogatory way towards transwomen and transwomen who are raped or assaulted are usually called the t slur rather than say transwoman or whatever. It's like, the n slur used to be the technical, legal, culturally accepted term for black people but now it's offensive because so many white people have used it to cause harm.

Transvestite is an outdated term which is really offensive to the trans community because etymologically speaking, it means wears the clothes of the opposite gender where transgender means their gender does not match the gender they were assigned at birth. 

The t slur is most often used in pornography as a fetishization of transwomen. Unfortunately for transwomen, surgery, HRT, the years of appointments with various doctors, etc, is very expensive and many trans people end up homeless so they go into porn or other forms of sex work as a survival tactic.

I'm the one you called a bigot & I'm not offended. Words don't get people killed. If you believe they do, maybe a good old-fashioned book burning would cleanse the palette. Years ago in Orlando I was surrounded by armies of transvestites (that's what they were called then) and homosexuals, lived, worked, and partied with them, and had herds of transvestite hookers working my neighborhood downtown. I didn't have to go to conventions or meetings to feel the culture. Seems to me "You ain't on that real shit; I live here, you on a field trip."
