Scientists have recently discovered that theres part of your brain that is wired to specifically construct identity. It tells you where you fit in with the rest of the world. People who are trans (whether agender, bigender, gender fluid, or a transwoman or transman) have brains which function in the same way and tells them that how ever they're wired is who they are. Trans people have been saying for centuries that they simply "feel" like they're not the gender they were assigned at birth and want to express their true identity.

Dammit, I keep missing the second post. Care to share a source on that? That sounds very interesting.

When it comes to sensitive issues, people tend to get overly defensive which just exacerbates tensions. I know trans folk, and treat them like regular human beings, (because they are, of course) but I didn't always have knowledge on the culture for lack of a better word. I once chimed in about a local teenager having problems with the DMV not allowing them to wear makeup in their license photo. This person was a "gender non-conforming" male, and I said something like "why not just identify as female on the license, and avoid the whole issue", and got my head bitten off by about 4 people who thought that was the most dickish thing to say. I thought this person was presenting as female because they were a trans woman. I had no idea gender non-conforming was even a thing, I'm a straight male, how am I supposed to know that? So I left that conversation thinking "fuck ever talking about that again", which is of course counter-productive because communication is key in life, especially with sensitive topics. Point being, people on both sides of the conversation (not this particular one, but trans issues as a whole) should pause, and take a breath before diving into their viewpoint. Actually, that would be a helpful thing to do in general. The first reaction is always the most volitile, and that's exactly what people go with, so we all argue, and nothing really gets accomplished.

Fuck, I hope that makes sense. Sometimes people don't understand what the hell I'm talking about, it's frustrating.

Man, I disagree and I don't think we're going to see eye to eye on it so I'll meet you in the middle and say that I think people should definitely be aware of what they're saying, who they might offend, and that sometimes they shouldn't say it. Basically people should think before they speak. Just as a rule in life. But that goes the other way too. Words are absolutely meaningless without people giving them power. Strip the power from the word and it stops being so offensive.

I definitely get what you're saying but I'd like to point out that you remembered what they said and you took it with you. Sometimes people have to be a bit dickish to get their point across otherwise it doesn't get heard and cisgender heteroseuxal people being hurt by someone pointing out their bigotry isn't that bad a thing. We could use a bit of a sore spot.

With the computer age out or disposal, it might also do people good if they know they are ignorant of something to google it before they say what they're thinking if they don't want to get some asshole like me being like "uh that's gross."

I think a better way for me to say the above would have been this:

....the proper thing to do when someone says "hey thats offensive" is to figure out why it's offensive and accept that it can be hurtful, and use that information in the future when deciding whether or not to say the offensive thing again.

Like, if you're going to be a bigot just get over yourself and admit that you don't care about or support transpeople or whoever. When the KKK gets mad that people call them racist, the correct response isn't to tell the people calling them racist that they're being mean. It's to tell the KKK to stop being racist if they don't want to be called racist.

The only thing I really took away from that conversation was "don't say anything about this stuff anymore just to be safe", but I get your point. I still don't think I should be called a cisgendered bigot just for asking about something I don't understand. It was assumed I was being malicious because I'm a straight male.

and as long as were getting offended over stupid shit, (sorry rob but i do find these "i am offended by that word you used in your funny rap" convos a little unwarranted),

i am offended by the use of the term "Redneck" when describing a hardworking, blue collar, Caucasian individual. by those laws i can be described as "Redneck", and that would be fine if there wasn't so many negative connotations associated with the word. every time someone calls me a redneck i assume they are calling me a racist, white supremacist, P.O.S. so i wouldlike to ask everybod to think of who you are hurting when you use the "R" word from now on.

I find the term "cis gender" offensive to me. Well, not actually cause I am never offended by what anyone calls me cause I see words as nothing more than phonetic utterances and the meaning I give it may not be the meaning anyone else gives it, but where is the arbitrary line drawn? The "cis" term came about because some people didn't want to call people who fit into the factual statistical norm as normal because it would imply they may be ab-normal. Abnormal means that something deviates from statistical norm. So now a scientific and mathematical term is now considered a "hate fact."

About the whole thing with me referring to Caitlyn as a he, If that is what she wants, then I will refer to that person as "she" from now on. [edit] I just found out that putting pronouns in quotes is offensive... sorry about that.[/edit] I was in no way trying to repress or put her down. I would hope she would not get offended but simply make a statement of how the wording can be corrected. This is what @robtidwell did. He corrected the use of the words. I find that perfectly ok. There was no anger from him in his correction of me. I do think though that once a certain line is crossed, he takes to the offense. @krunkazphuk associates with everyone of all walks of life, When she knows transgenders who refer to themselves as Tranny, should she not use that word to describe someone who calls themselves that?  Even the GLAAD Media Reference Guide to transgender says towards the bottom that while "tranny" is considered defamatory, "some transgender people may use 'tranny' to describe themselves, others find it profoundly offensive." What should I do in that case? Should I call the person what they want to be called? Or should I go against their wishes and not call them what they identify themselves as. In the end, it is just all words and only the person receiving the words can determine if they themselves are offended. Should we ban all words that someone finds offensive? I am a republican but I have heard the term republican used in a demeaning way. Should I ask the person to stop using that word? There should be no grey area. If there is a line in the sand it needs to be distinctly drawn otherwise there really is no line and any discourse about it becomes just argumentative, opinion based, and results in pointless debate. I will call someone whatever they want to be called, but a person should not get offended when I utter particular sounds from my mouth that they find offensive when someone who categorically considers themselves the same as the offended does not. Correction is ok. Offense is not unless correction is purposely ignored. It is really hard to know what is correct anymore. Even the GLAAD reference says that "transgenders, transgendered, transgenderism, sex change, pre-operative, post-operative, biologically male, biologically female, genetically male, genetically female" are problematic words and should not be used and if you look at the archives for the site, the terms that were at one time considered the correct word to use are now incorrect to use. How is one supposed to know. And what happens when it is decided that the correct terms now are deemed incorrect later. It's all way too confusing and is catering to people who are too easily offended. I say, take no offense in anything said because it's all too dependent on arbitrary factors that are way too dynamic.

Caitlyn claims here that she is the new normal. I can see that only in the sense that it should be the norm that people can identify with whatever they want to identify with. So from the stance of statistics, it would be abnormal to not identify with what you believe you are. The abnormal would be the people "living a lie" and not going with their self identity. But saying that someone is not being true to their self identity is offensive to some. So should Caitlyn be told not to use the word "normal" since it implies that people who don't live as they identify themselves as "abnormal" ? How dare she!

That's my rant. It's probably confusing because I am confused about what the real issue is.

I'm not even bent about it.

Krunk was purposefully being offensive though. Deliberately. It was a cheap joke and it's fine to make cheap jokes and it's purpose was to offend. All I was saying was I don't like it. It's up to krunk on how to incorporate that into future posts.

What part of "those are lyrics" are you missing? Give words too much power and they'll strangle you. For instance, VOLDEMORT! There. The universe didn't implode. Also, fuck Caitlyn and her couture meat suit. I'd be impressed if she bitch-slapped herself out of her narcissistic trance and solved a real problem, but with role-models you get what you pay for.

I used to live in downtown Orlando, and recommend Bike Week at Parliament House for the discriminating freak on a leash.

Ok so i read one or two of the storybook posts and decided something.

im ignorant to most of the whole transgender business, and i use out of date terms that might make me look like a bigot to some. but you know what, i honestly don't give a fuck.

If i call you a transvestite or tranny in ignorance but are generally otherwise civil and polite to you, get over it. im probably never going to catch up with the times and if you cannot accept that, well thats your hang up not mine. i wont treat you differently because of whatever you wanna call yourself. your just another person as far as im concerned.

Rob was awesome enough to talk to me and try and enlighten me about PC stuff towards the transgender community, but i just get confused.

far as im concerned, if it has a penis its a man. if it has a vagina its a woman. but if you wanna identify as someone else, go for it. none of my fucking business.

if this post offends anyone in any way shape or form, all good. ive used up my quota for new friends this year.

The reason why most people are so hesitant to give a fuck about LGBTQWEJFAIAEA or whatever it is now days, its too fucking complicated. don't complicate it because you think every single thing needs a label.
