Psyral and I observed from across the street in Houston when Westboro Church members hit Osteen’s megachurch years ago. I used the experience for an Ethics class, and suspect that the level of ignorance I was observing from Phelps’ drones wasn’t in their selective, hate-fueled perception of biblical verse. It was in their narcissistic selfie videos, high-fives, and absolute belief that they were absolutely right. Power can corrupt in any form, even religious. God bless blasphemy.

No shit.  Remember that story in the news a couple of months ago about that nutty church in upstate New York where those two brothers got beaten, one of them to death?  What if someone said, “hey let’s talk about the extent to which Christianity played a role in what those people did?”  That would seem completely ridiculous, since we all know that whatever fucked up shit was going on in those people’s fucked up heads, it has nothing at all to do with what we associate Christianity (and I say that as a hostile non-Christian).  It’s equally ridiculous to try to talk about what the religion of Islam has to do with the crazy shit that ISIS does.
