So with all this label war, political stuff and other stuff that breeds animosity let’s have a positive discussion. See if this forum is capable of this ok?
I recently started a local movement to help impoverished children in my area. We take a few kids every week to do some type of fun activity, Zoo, bowling, arcade or just different things they normally do not get to do because they come from single parent or poorer families. Where I live we have a high number of families where one or more parents are locked up so a lot of these kids get bored and do dumb things that get them in trouble. We are not sure how well this will help the overall crime rate in our town but this month (January 2017) the local police and Sheriff’s department both reported to us that petty crimes like small theft, vandalism and break ins were down nearly 25% for ages 17 and under.
We also recently took some of my settlement to start back up a Tee-Ball , Little league baseball and softball leagues locally.
So for those of you that have kids or work with kids often. What are some major issues you see in the lower income communities (outside of the education system).

THE issue is the breakdown of the family. Plus poverty is a cycle. Probably a lot of it has to do with drug and alcohol addiction.
Kids need so much attention the first three years or so of their life. If you are leaving your kid in its crib with toys while you smoke dope it aint getting the interaction that it needs. The kid grows up to be anti social and tends to develop bad habits like its parents.
Then they become teenagers and mom and dad still dont give a fuck. They have no structure. No family bonding over camping or going to a game or anything. Of course these kids are gonna tag buildings and steal shit most of the time.
They fall in with other kids whose parents dont give a fuck and then they feed off of each other.
Then they become adults. They never learned all the tools they needed along the way. They dont go to college because the parents never pushed for them to or instilled any sense of purpose in them.
So they get dead end jobs and drink and drug because they feel like they need to in order to function.
Then they have kids.
Then they leave their kids in their crib while they smoke dope.
Rinse and repeat.
Damn, that wasnt positive at all. Sorry.

I respect the bright side of life, Nyro, and appreciate solution-oriented honesty before positivity. Many free-range ghetto kids where I live are being raised by other kids (for instance, an 11 year old with a line of younger kids following them around all day.) They also beg for change, whether on their own or after being coached by an adult. When they hit me up I ask them “Where’s your momma?” The usual reply is “She sleepin.” Wanna hear about the underage drug runners that try to feed me Molly? Life is good, but I’m not a freelance city planner. I check myself on a daily basis and hope health radiates outward. I live in an inner-city, multi-racial hood, and have already said how I found a baby in the street, so things may be more complicated here than an after-school program can fix. Lots of single moms, with the occasional dad playing football in the street, leads me to believe Slumerican’s “breakdown of the family” observation is a good place to start looking for answers. Some say the welfare state has replaced the dad in lots of homes, and think the way to fix it is to reform government assistance. Have fun with your gaggle of forsaken children. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

In addition to what has been listed I would add nutrition and healthcare. Daycare is also prohibitively expensive for low income families.

I agree with everything you guys have said. I live near and work in a town where blacks are the majority this also happens to be the town we do all this stuff in mostly.
I see generation after generation caught in a continual loop of poverty. Only minimum wage jobs here so no one ever really is able to even save up enough money to get out even if they wanted to. Not unless they nail a scholarship.
Role models and family involvement is another issue. The choices kids pick as role models and the lack of participation in kids lives by parents is very sad.
I had a terrible childhood I was one of the lucky ones to escape a terrible life after having spent many years locked up as a youth. I have a soft spot for kids who are considered the undesirables in society. I only wish I could do a lot more.

It’s pathetic. I made a thread similar to this awhile back, and it fizzled out fairly quick. Nobody wants to be positive on here. They may say they do, but it’s a load of bull. Fuck this forum. The front page is the only good thing about this place. It truly is the number one place for underground news. Shame the forums are garbage.

Nyro I like what you’re doing. Keep it up! Have you thought about getting local law enforcement involved? I think a lot of these clashes with police and people stem from a mutual fear and anger towards one another. If police officers are active in their communities, they are able to actually build relationships with people there. That means the people are less afraid of the police, and the police are less afraid of the people. I don’t have any evidence to support it, but I would assume that would lower police fatalities as well as use of excessive force. And it likely has much farther reaching implications.
I would like to try and get a “life skills” class added to the public school system here. Or at least have some life skills added to the curriculum. Stuff like: basic vehicle maintanence, how to change a tire, how to balance a checkbook, how to understand a credit score, how to file income taxes. Practical, real world knowledge that a lot of kids don’t get until it’s too late. I imagine this would get bipartisian support. I know they do a lot of this for kids in Special Ed, but these are skills every kid should know.

I stand by the evaluation that there’s a high percentage of government assisted, single-parent homes. Observation isn’t blame. Isn’t the first step to a solution admitting there’s a problem? And the Nyros of the world can’t adopt all the abandoned kids (who might make more abandoned kids, and so on…) and still have time for their bourbon & sedative smoothies.
