Listened to this twice on a long drive today. I’ll be doing the same again tomorrow. If you don’t know about Kook Keith, this is a really good starting point. It’s one of his less alienating projects. Lots of widespread appeal but still distinctively unique.

First of all, it’s Critical BEATdown. Critical “Breakdown” sounds like you never even listened to the title track.

Second, Kool Keith debuted two full years before Critical Beatdown. He was on the seminal Ultramagnetic 12″ “To Give You Love.” This stuff is hip-hop 101.

It slips by a lot of people because of the spelling error. Keith and Cedric misspelled Ultramagnetic Magnetic MCs as “Ultra Magnetic MC’s,” the error being the apostrophe, which denotes possession. The exact kind of thing I love to discuss. Anyways, they fixed the spelling for Critical Beatdown so if you search “Ultramagnetic MCs” you never find To Give You Love and I suppose technically it’s a different band of you want to be super pedantic. One thing is sure, Keith made his debut in 1986.
