Recently, Detroit’s 101 WRIF FM Rock Station conducted an near hour in-depth interview with ex-Megadeth bass player David Ellefson. It went into details on how Violent J ended up working together with The Lucid to create “Saddle Up and Ride” and re-imagining Faith No More’s classic hit “Epic”. Turns out it was all frontman Vinnie Dombrowski’s idea and the band knew the random collaboration would make headlines. The Lucid also received Faith No More’s very own blessing to re-do their own song. Interestingly, David and Violent J didn’t actually meet in-person until J’s recent appearance at the Atlanta, Georgia “Days of the Dead” convention.

“The band the Lucid, featuring Vinnie Dombrowski from Sponge and ex-Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, have a new song out called “Sweet Toof”, with none other than Insane Clown Posse’s Violent J. The song uses the melody of Faith No More’s “Epic” but with completely different lyrics. In a recent Talkin’ Rock interview with David, he explained that this was all Vinnie’s idea. “Yeah, and it was his idea to call J, you know, Violent J, cuz he lives there.” He went on “So, you know, whatever Vinny wants to do, I just go with it cuz it’s just always cool.”

After rewriting the lyrics, they approached the Faith No More camp. I asked David what they thought. “They loved it. They thought it was super cool. Uh, they totally gave us their blessing on it. So we were able to use the song.”

David said this song probably isn’t for everyone. “It, it was very random and we knew it was going to make some headlines and turn some heads, which great rock and roll should, you know? And if you don’t have some haters, you’re probably not famous enough. You know, I’ve learned that along the way.” He said there’s a lot in common between Megadeth fans and those of ICP “It’s funny. Megadeth fans and Insane Clown Posse fans, they aren’t so different. And there’s a lot of ’em that cross over because, you know, they’re kind of the bastard children of, of genres, so to speak, right?”

Funny enough, in this interconnected world, he’d never met Violent J until last week at a convention in Atlanta.”
