Anyone get to check out joyland yet? I just picked it up and noticed right off the rip its only 300 pages long. I guess because he was working on dr sleep too and couldn’t put that much time into it. Anyways i’ll check back in a week or so to tell yall how it was.

While i’m bringing this thread back up, I gotta ask olmrd, which one is your favorite out of the dark tower series and why? And would you be on board for it coming to the big screen(if it ever does). This is probably my favorite thread on here and I don’t wanna see it die

Yo Slum you’re lucky I seen that mention lol cus its hard for me to do anything on this cell… my favorite?? Sheeittt…

The first is great, I love Michael Whelan’s illustrations too. The guy is intimidating. Its too brief overall to be my favorite but that’s not a flaw…. 2 is action packed and interesting as hell.. 4 used to be loathed but I reread it recently and having experienced a little tryst with that Mexican chick, well it got me relating better to the love story.. flash forward like two decades lol and Wolves of the Calla is great, like its own desperate story but important in bringing Callahan into the tale. The next one explains about his Salem’s Lot and NYC days and I loved it! I finally visited NYC last year so it was quite the mental picture with those dimensional bridges… and the final book, tragic as it was, was loved as well. I’m one of the few who felt the ending was perfect. How the fuck else could it have ended? “Roland then reached the top and saw Christ, eating Vienna sausages…”…

Part Three. The illustrations and descriptions of the places the mono takes the ka-tet are terrifying. I love how you can find more rereading… my faves at this point from best to least: 3, 7, 2, 4.5 (The Wind Through the Butthole I mean Keyhole), 6, 5, 1, 4.

Not the Mexican NC succubi BTW way lol, the NY urine-bottle keeper… don’t ask… but the film scares me that it won’t be done right, but if given the utmost care then hell yes

I gotta agree with you on the ending. It really couldn’t have ended any other way. I guess people expected more closure on the reason why he was chosen to represent the “white” and effectively save all of existence. Or maybe they expected more of an epic battle between the Crimson King and Roland instead of him lobbing sneetches from a balcony.

But when it boils down to it, Rolands journey, to me, was one of redemption as much as it was obsession. Trying to set right in his mind all the wrongs he did and all the people he got killed. Especially that he thought Susans death was his fault and her ghost never had left him.

So at the end when he wakes up and he has the horn with him, it gives you hope that he could one day redeem himself and break the endless cycle that he had no idea he was a part of.

I’m kinda the opposite myself I loved wizards and glass and the comradery between Roland, Cuthbert, and Alaine. I didn’t want that book to end.

From an emotional standpoint the last one was the best for me. I cried like a hormonal teenager on her period after the battle at the breaker compound, straight up. First time that ever happened in a book for me.

Yeah like I said, after rereading, despite it often being my least fave, W&G is quite the tale. That Rhea of the Coos is quite the fucking cuntsack. Walking around with a rotting snake on her necks, trying to please underage girls with her gnarled digits… who does that lol!?

Yeah Cuthbert’s personality shone a lot more this second time too. One of the only people who got away with Roland punching him.

And the Horn of Eld being mentioned at the end… I swear that’s what eludes all the bitchers. Believe me there are a LOT! Roland finally did something right enough, or a combination of things, to finally get a shot at redemption. That’s the best possible ending to me.

I forgot to make my post. I ripped through Joyland in ten or so hours friday with a few breaks in between. Besides Under The Dome, I think it’s the best work he has put out in the last 5 or so years. Don’t go in expecting his regular blood soaked horror fare. It has some supernatural elements to it but that really isn’t the point of the book.

It’s more of a coming of age story similar in spirit to hearts of atlantis and it. It’s a pretty thin plot so I can’t really elaborate on it, but most of us read king for his characters and not his plot lines. Here is the back of the book:

“College student Devin Jones took the summer job at Joyland hoping to forget the girl who broke his heart. But he wound up facing something far more terrible: the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and dark truths about life—and what comes after—that would change his world forever.

A riveting story about love and loss, about growing up and growing old—and about those who don’t get to do either because death comes for them before their time—JOYLAND is Stephen King at the peak of his storytelling powers. With all the emotional impact of King masterpieces such as The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption, JOYLAND is at once a mystery, a horror story, and a bittersweet coming-of-age novel, one that will leave even the most hard-boiled reader profoundly moved”.

Be warned, this is a VERY sad book, but I’d still pick it up asap if you are a constant reader like I am

Sounds good Slum, I’ll have to check it out. I liked Hearts in Atlantis so if it has that vibe I’m down.

Now that Breaking Bad is over…. Eddie Dean can join the ka-tet bitch!

Have to squeeze a library trip in between jobs tomorrow. Based on what Slum, Pat, Preachy et al have suggested, I’m going to first see if Dr. Sleep is in. If not, I’ll try for Joyland, Gerald’s Game or maybe I’ll finish Everything’s Eventual.

I have the comics on my computer but havent got around to reading em yet. There is still hope for the dark tower movie. They found someone to finance it with ron howard to direct it. id actually like to see unknown actors for the roles cuz anyone famous would take me out of the story if that makes any sense. I can see aaron paul as eddie in a way. From my understanding they are going for a trilogy with a tv series in between so things dont get left out. Another reason someone like russel crow shouldnt play roland as he wouldnt have time for a tv series. Ive heard javier bardem(baddie in no country for old men) was a candidate too.

either way ill squeal like a giddy school girl if it comes to fruition. if howard can pull a peter jackson i can see this being one of the greatest films of all time. It should be a fucking crime to not have read the series. Prj thanks for the bump mayne

Library has me 8th in line for Dr Sleep lol. Heralds Game til then.

I’m excited to see what actress can pull off a (hopefully uncensored and ad-libbing) Susannah. As for Roland, they’ve had Russell Crowd, Javier Bardem, Viggo Mortenson as possibilities at different times. I feel crowe would be the worst for same reason slum mentioned about famous actors. . I always thought the guy who did Flagg did great in the kinda cheesy Stand TV movie. He’d be good here but maybe too old now.

I am so not interested in this movie, and I love the Dark Tower series, a lot. They’ll just fuck it up like they did The Stand.

Ron Howard? Oh hell no.

Hey guys, just wanted to throw in my two cents. I have loved the DT series since I first got my hands on Wizard and Glass. I read it first, and kind of worked my way backwards from there, as I had a hard time finding all of the books in the series at the time. As with a lot of the older readers, I had to wait a little bit for 5-7 to come out, but it was worth the wait.

As far as the movies/TV Series is concerned, I am really looking forward to it. Currently it is in the hand of Universal and NBC, which disappoints me a little bit, but not much that I can do about it to change that. If I had it my way, I would probably say the Netflix should be the ones to have control over the project as that would be an adequate media platform to release something like this to.

I am mostly concerned with the beginning of the first movie, as anyone who has read the first book knows it is kind of slower than the rest, and might have people who know nothing about the series up and out of their seats too early. Their loss I suppose. Anyways, I have no real point to my post, that was about it. If you want to keep an eye on updates for the movie, I go here.

I agree 100% about how the first could dissuade some peeps by being slower and so brief overall as a story. Was thinking about it earlier too. But I don’t see anywhere else to start it unfortunately… its gotta start as a TV movie I think. Healthy but not huge budget; it won’t need much. All it has to do is stay loyal to the story and keep it as gritty as violent as needed.

Its like how they’re doing Beetlejuice 2… I’m scared to see it go wrong but am fascinated that people are actually attempting to do it.

Finally read Just After Sunset this weekend. It was alright, would rather a King novel opposed to a bunch of short stories, but it was definitely better than nothing. The Cat From Hell is one of the best King short stories ever. Even if you don’t want to read all the stories in the book, check that on out ninja’s.
