I do the car pass, and my vehicle was searched at the front gate.

Just to be on the safe side, I think I’ll replace my BBQ gear and emergency tools with some disposable cheapie stuff. Probably not too wise to bring the good stuff anyway, in case it were to walk away.

No shit… But on the other hand, camping… tent… stake… hammer… At least that’s the logic that comes to mind.

Because no one needs hammers to punch down tent stakes at the Gathering. That’s just silly.  And who needs sharpies to get ninjas to sign their stuff.

[edit] LOL @entrappedmind beat me to it.

Nelson Ledges I had a hammer for stakes and a blade to cut the thick roots out that were in the way of my ideal tent spot. Minimal searches there. Dark Forest for-fuckin-ever! Highlights from the site include: giant suicidal moths in the fire, 2 Dope’s very brief visit, the shooting of the 100-round fireworks by the shitters, getting access to the shitters at their cleanest in the early am, discussing Mr.Bones with an Asian juggalo, getting free beer n beef from the crew that left due to Esham diddling with the guy’s girl, and more.. although on the final morning it was a sudden torrential downpour. Man did it rain lol

ice is one of the ripoffs that i plan for, because you basicly cant bring in enough to last you the whole time.

seems like it was more like six or seven, but i called it ten just to make sure it wasnt short.

anyway, its worth it.  food, smokes, really almost everything else thats consumable, its better to just bring a weeks supply.

Do you think the fact that it is closer to “civilization” will change the ice prices?

According to ye olde G-Maps and Bing, there’s TWO gas stations right next to the place well within walking distance. I’m sure they clean up during these things.

[edit]

Uh, I had no idea about the tools thing. I (like many others) will be driving quite the way to get there and I have stuff to keep my car in line if it acts up… what the hell are the people driving buckets supposed to do? Just leave it there? or can anyone get this stuff back? I *doubt this place’s got a coat check…

Buying Ice at Hog Rock was for suckers…It was alot cheaper in town…Fuck that 10 doller a bag shit…

Also we saved a fuck ton of ice by putting all our food in one cooler and only opening it once or twice a day…and we also kept it under a reflective tarp all day to reduce the heat it absorbed…

The beer cool was doomed from its inception…

The mythbusters guys figured out that the best way to keep beer cold is a mixture of salt and water.

For the last two years, I’ve purchased about 6 pounds of dry ice and a large bag of regular ice, and put that at the bottom of my 6 day cooler. Then I add a frozen gallon of water and a dozen frozen water bottles on top of that. Last year, I left before sunrise on Tuesday morning and had ice left by Sunday night. Even by Monday morning, drinks were still cool even after the ice melted. I had just used it to cool a couple of bottles of water or cans of beer at a time, and keep some stuff like cheese and juice boxes cold.

I also have a “tub of stuff” that I take to the Gathering, which has always included a hammer, pocket knife and scissors. They’re near the bottom, and topped with stuff like duct tape, hand sanitizer, garbage bags, air bed pump, plastic silverware…stuff like that, so they never bother to rifle through the whole tub.

That sounds like some Bill Nye stuff right there… I think I’d have to see an example before I attempted that myself. My luck, I’d forget what it was filled with, dig in for a drink, and end up losing my hand to frostbite. Or something like that. Where in the blue hell do you GET dry ice in the first place? If it’s common knowledge, forgive me, I’ve just never had a use for it before.

Thank you for the suggestions though, I’ll definitely keep the “tub o’ stuff” idea in mind for anything I want to make sure doesn’t get confiscated, but is questionable enough to worry about.

The reflective tarp is also a good idea, @OCJ_Brendan… Being a first timer to a multiple-day event such as this, I can see I have a shitload to learn. Leaving a cooler out like that, do you just hope nothing walks away? Or do you have it secured in some manner?

^ Most places don’t sell it, but some grocery stores do. It’s always in a relatively cube shaped cooler at the front of the store, and is locked. It seems to sell for about a dollar per pound. It’s not difficult to use, but you just have to know what you’re doing to get the most out of it.

First things first…take the cooler into the store when you buy it, and don’t buy it until the very last second. I had my cooler packed with the frozen bottles when I showed up at the grocery store on the morning I left for the GOTJ last year. This also made the cooler cold inside, so the dry ice doesn’t have to work as hard. When you buy it, it will probably be in a plastic bag so you can handle it a bit. You should wrap it in newspaper or a towel so it doesn’t come into direct contact with your cooler (because it gets so cold that it can crack the cooler). The store you get it from will almost certainly have some oven mits you can use to arrange it in the cooler before you leave.

In 2012. I put a big bag of ice directly on top of the dry ice, then the frozen bottles on top of the bag of ice. Last year, I dumped the bag of ice into the cooler, so there was loose ice on top of the dry ice. Then I pushed the frozen water bottles into the loose ice. The first way worked MUCH better since the loose ice would melt just slightly then refreeze, so my frozen bottles were encased in ice for the first two or three days! Keeping the ice in the bag meant that I could take out the bag and drop it on the floor to break up the ice if I needed. Both years, by about day 4, the dry ice was gone, but since I still had a bunch of frozen bottles and a frozen gallon, everything stayed cold for the entire six days that the cooler advertized. Didn’t have to buy GOTJ ice either year.

No matter how much you plan you will forget something…Its just how it goes…Always remember that is my first advice.

In reference to your cooler question five of my seven gatherings have been as a part of OCJ going so we usually had a few of the big homies who chill at the site much of the day.  Not too much theft around these parts with Tubby and Biship kicking it shirtless with their belly tats waving in the breeze.

To you I say the best bet is make friends with your neighbors… they make excellent security for your stuff…provided you help them out too…it served us well the other two gatherings…We also would put the coolers in tents at night and lock the tents and then laugh about how if someone wanted our shit they could just cut through the side of our tent…there by double fucking us…so Idk if I really recommend that idea…

My money…wallet…carton…and drugs all stay in a backpack on my back the ENTIRE week…I even wear it while I fuck my woman…

You can buy dry ice at any major grocery store (Publix, Winn-Dixie etc) usually somewhere around the deli/bakery section. Nowadays they wanna make sure you’re not gonna use it to make water bottle bombs, so it’d help if you’re over 18yrs. old. and have to ask for it as for those reasons they don’t hang signs for it. Because it’s not something a lot of people use all the time, there’s a lot of myths around its handling and usage but unless you plan on wrapping your fist around it with a handful of salt… you can touch the dry cubes and put it (ONE SMALL PIECE AT A TIME) in your drinks n’shit no problem (it’s what you see in “The Munsters” n’stuff when they drink potions to make it look all spooky). Pour enough water on it (THAT is when you DON’T wanna touch it) and you get ground fog. They usually sell it in a paper bag like material lined with plastic or wax and takes a LONG time to melt until it comes into contact with liquid at which point it expels a dioxide gas (hence bottle bombs) YOU DO NOT WANT TO BREATH IN DIRECTLY. When it stops producing this fog-like mist, its become inert and is essentially just ice but tastes gross (cuz it’s not actual water) Like @verytwiztidraven does, you put it at the bottom of coolers separate from the rest and STILL IN BAG. If you’re a MacGuyver type you can even put an open bag of it in front of a fan for some broke-ass A/C!

As far as the storage question goes, Car Pass = Hotel Safe. And like those, never assume it’s 100% secure and do as @ocj_brendan does and keep your backpack on you like a turtle shell for your other stuff. Besides, ya never know what a pack of smokes or roll of toilet paper at the right time could get you ;)

Just say no to fanny packs.
