Last year I took a course on comparative mythology and was assigned an essay where I had to write about two mythological figures and how they are the same. The ultimate point was to really learn how our stories are connected and how our brains are wired to really appreciate certain sorts of patterns in story telling.
I asked my professor if I could write about one of the Joker’s Cards and his exact quote was “I don’t believe ICP has ever done anything creative. You’re going to have to convince me.” I spent much of the semester showing him analysis of ICP songs, talking about the mythology and whatever else he would allow me to waste his time with. He didn’t know how big of a nerd I am or how obsessive my brain gets.
ICP’s mythological subtext is a huge inspiration in my art practices and getting to write about them was fun. So I decided to expand the series while I wait for people to send me videos for the what is a juggalo art project.
Here’s the first in the series: The Carnival of Carnage and Azazel.
http://www.smashwords.com/book…..iew/550297
It’s free.
Basically, it’s about how the first Joker’s Card links ICP to Islam through several factors. The Jinn and Joker’s Cards are similar, with Carnival of Carnage being most similar to Iblis, the leader of the jinni, and how it’s name and concept are linked to Iblis’s first form, Azazel. It’s academic and nerdy. You should read it.
I’m writing the second one now and it should go up by next week, then ringmaster, then an edited down version of the one I wrote for my mythology class which focuses on the Great Milenko and the Erinyes of ancient greece. I think it’ll be interesting. After I finish the 7 essays for the six joker’s cards, I plan to write about the gathering and how it is actually derivative of an ancient greek festival.
Anyway, I hope you guys like them. And if you want you can check out my other stories.

will read.
i hope you are takin advantage of every opportunity to call your instructor out for talkin out his ass.
whenever i caught an instructor talkin out his ass, i made sure to remind the class about it constantly. since we paid for it and all, it isnt too much too expect that the mufuckas actually know some shit, before they speak some shit. some of the instructors i had bullshitted their way through half their courses, cuz they didnt think we would ever pick up on it.
awfully paranoid, arent you?

nah, he’s a homie now. When I took my honors art course, I built my project on mythology and asked him to be my mentor (we got to pick an adviser for the semester long project). He knows his mythology well, he just never bothered to look into ICP. And, I mean, that’s sort of typical from intellectual types. I think he ended up enjoying learning about ICP as much as I enjoyed bothering him with all this stuff. lol.

Someone in the chat asked for me to post the link to this, so i’m bumping it instead of making a new thread. I hope if anybody reads it that they like it!

Thanks so much for sharing this essay, Rob! I really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to the ones on the other Joker Cards. I also have an academic background in comparative religion and mythology, and have been reflecting quite a bit about the symbolism of the Dark Carnival and the Joker Cards. The reviewer on SmashWords seems to have missed the point a bit, in that you state pretty directly that you’re not maintaining that Violent J and Shaggy consciously modeled the symbolism on Islam or anything else. That’s not the only way, or even the most important way, that archetypes work. Great work, and thanks again!

Pretty interesting, but I agree with the review on the part where he said it seems you were trying too hard to make dots and lines, but then again it isn’t like you are trying to prove that they are the same you are just comparing them to each other.
I will read the future ones.
Yeah, I definitely don’t think they sat around and said hmmm let’s make this one Muslim and this one Greek and this one voodoo…
But rather that our brains are wired to recognize certain patterns and these two things are part of that pattern. Plus, there is shared history. I just find it fascinating.
I will try to make that clearer in the next one, though it is a more linear match and the reused the mythological counterpoint in a much more direct way later on so that might be difficult.
Thanks for your thoughts. I really appreciate it.

That’s really encouraging, thanks!
If you go to the Santa Ana show, you should join our clique and we can talk more! I love talking about this shit and most people just look at me cross eyed. Even my myth professor was like rolling his eyes when I pitched the project.

I’m definitely hoping to make it to the Santa Ana show if I can get a day or two off work. Going to ask my boss tomorrow when tix go on sale. Would love to get a chance to talk with you further! I read your bio on SmashWords and it’s amazing how much our interests overlap!

I made a post on a music discussion subreddit about ICP, and everyone promptly shat all over it:
Can we have an open-minded discussion about the Insane Clown Posse?

I don’t reddit either, but I think that a few of the people there have been pretty fair to ICP, without really getting what they do. I hate when people criticize them for being poor lyricists because they aren’t playing by the same rules that “lyrical” rappers are. They’re not trying to write songs to simply show how well they can write songs. They’re after something different, and really, they suck major ass when you try to compare them to more “hip hop” groups. But so the fuck does ice t, or nwa, or anybody else from that time frame of the late 80s or early 90s.
I would have used better songs, tbh. The songs you posted are the songs that people think are fun at first but that get old, with the exception of terrible.
I made an account and I’m going to comment over there but I’m not sure what my response will be yet. lol.
