I saw the numbers on Faygoluvers today and it seems that “Lost” debuted at #17 on the top 200 and #7 on the top album sales, while “Found” debuted at #136 on the top 200 and #58 on the top album sales. So my question is this: how do you account for this? Is it:
a) people buying “Lost,” thinking it was horrible, and not buying “Found”
b) people hearing “Lost,” thinking it was awesome, buying it, then hearing “Found,” thinking it was horrible, and not buying it
c) people buying “Lost,” and then being confused that “Found” was an entirely separate album
There are any number of other reasons but I would think the numbers would be closer than that. It’s kind of a bummer to me because I think “Found” is so much better. Maybe people weren’t even interested in the concept, thinking it was gonna be all happy friendly shit?

Those don’t get reported to soundscan? I did not realize that, nor do I understand why that would be the case, but let me throw in that Death Pop was also sold at the Gathering and debuted at #4.

And those music charts are not a measure of popularity. If the particular fans of a group are know to be in lower income brackets or pirate the music, then it throws it all out the window.
Releasing it to a large group at the gathering before official release gave many the opportunity to pirate it before the release. I have downloaded leaked stuff that I said I would buy when it come out. When it came out… I never got it. Not cause I didn’t like it, but because I already had it. It’s not helpful to the musicians, I know, but it is what happens. I try to justify it by buying merch and attending shows, but the justification is just a way of pretending that I am not doing something wrong. And even that only happens/matters if some other person knows what I did and I care about their opinion of me.
I think the “Lost > Found” is based on the pre-release at the gathering resulting in more time to pirate before the official drop.

The two biggest reasons for the dip in sales imo-
#1- Lack of awareness. They did not even put out a video for Found. And they decided not to tour to promote the release.
#2- Lost wasn’t that great of an album in a lot of ninja’s opinion, including my own. Most juggalos like Phantom better, and that bitch was free. And ICP barely promoted Lost, only putting out the one video for “Explosions”. Not a ton of effort there to get ninjas hype for a sequel.
Also…..
#3 there is the possibility that Psychopathic is starting to hide sales numbers, because Shaggy owes a shitload of back taxes.

The reason is because people had pre ordered Lost at Hatchetgear for the 3D cover. Then they came out with the in store tour and you had to buy a cd for a receipt for a wristband which shot sales pretty high.Even if you had pre ordered the cd many juggalos just wanted to see ICP.
I forgot about the Hatchetgear pre-order fuck up there too, that might of pissed a lot of Juggalos off.
They didn’t even do a Hatchetgear pre-order for Found right?

With that big of a difference on Billboard, it seems like it has to be some kind of technicality. I’m not sure how they count the sales, but Lost was released on Tuesday, and Found on a Friday, so if they count it over a week maybe Lost’s opening chart position just reflects more days of sales.

You gotta think the first day of sales account for 75% of the copies sold for the debut week, no matter what day the cd came out on.
Overall the weak sales may be a reflection of ICP’s weak promotional efforts for the 2 albums- No tours, one video, cancelling the nationwide instore tour after a few days , fuckin up the pre-order for the die hards… the list goes on.
At least the Gathering went well this year!![]()

the signing tour, even though it was cancelled after the first week or two definitely helped boost opening week sales.
Also, the preorders helped. The video helped. everything helped.
I’m not sure what they were expecting to drive the found sales. A lot of people weren’t bumping the album at the gathering and my tent was set up right next to the found tent and I heard that dude telling people all day long to buy the album to take it to the autograph tent to get signed and people were just like “nah i’m good”. I thought it was really odd that people were not buying the album.
I really, really liked lost and I don’t care much for found, so I think that might be part of it. It’s divisive. I wonder if there are four groups, rather than two. Those who hate both, those who love both, and those who love one and don’t care for the other.
I usually buy albums I bootleg if I like them. I did that with the last lotus album, as an example.

I’d guess probably a bit less than that, but regardless the remaining 25%+ is probably enough to determine the difference between debuting at #17 vs. #136. It’s also very possible that the in-store inflated Lost’s sales, while the Gathering release depressed Found’s sales. Either way, there’s no way that the difference in opening chart positions means anything in terms of how people are really responding to the albums.

But all albums were released on friday, now. So it would affect total sales but not sales by relationship which is what billboard is.
According to wikipedia Lost was released on April 28th, which was a Tuesday (that squares with my memory as well). I’m not ambitious enough to look up how Billboard calculates album sales but a couple of other articles refer to an album’s debut on the charts as the sales “in its first week.” The wikipedia article also says that Lost sold 18,000 copies in its first week, so with that in mind sales at the Gathering are going to put a pretty serious dent in the opening chart position of Found.
