Don't know if anyone knows about this or not but it's a fascinating fucking thing when you have downtime. Fuck all the sub-sub-subgenre shit but in their defense, they all make up a good map.

Reminds me of back in the day, when "record stores" existed... There were these places called "Sam Goody" and a few others... And if you were looking for a specific CD (or cassette tape lol) you had four categories to pick from: Pop, R&B, Country, and Jazz. You'd find Metallica, Cher, and Prodigy in the same section. Same with NWA, Boyz II Men, and Bob Marley.

So, as an adolescent, I grew up thinking Guns 'n Roses and AC/DC and Nazareth and Skid Row and Slayer were "pop" lol...

Then, when they finally added other genres (or maybe it was different retailers), and I was into Nirvana and the related Alternative craze... And I saw "Adult Alternative"... I thought my prayers were answered! No more hunting through all the mainstream filler bullshit! My music had its own category! But... Wait... What the fuck is this shit? Who in the blue hell are Enya and Yanni?

I don't miss the days of retail chain music stores. They can burn in hell.

I just imaged a giant wall of flannel holding a Yanni cd. Good stuff.

metal is quite possibly the worst music in the world for subgenres. its unreal some of the names ive heard over the years and yeah i heard of progressive black speed metal lol

You ain't kidding. It's more of a symptom of rock in general (cuz, technically, Metal is a subgenre of Rock lol), but it really does seem like Metal has more blurred lines between genres than most others. Like "screamo", some of the bands I've heard called screamo, that I'd never even think to categorize as such... It's nuts.

"Screamo" is a sub-genre of punk, derived from early emo bands like Sunny Day Real Estate except with screaming.

The 14 billion metal subgenre thing is kinda ridiculous, but it can also be useful for describing how a band sounds. Like if you told me a band was "progressive black metal" I'd know they probably sound a bit like Enslaved, "the Pink Floyd of black metal". A lot of them are pretty useless though like "brutal death metal" which is just regular death metal with more emphasis on breakdowns. It seems like splitting hairs to me, like "speed metal" which sounds EXACTLY like regular old heavy metal, it's not even particularly fast. I'm pretty sure most subgenre names were invented by publicists, and music writers to make a band seem more interesting.

That's sort of my point, though - If you listen to some bands (examples are escaping me at the moment) who are labelled "screamo" or who embrace the label themselves, there sounds to be much more influence from metal than punk.

Recently a British study of over 17,000 songs concluded that hip-hop has influenced pop music more than any other genre in the past 50 years.

That's very true. Death metal has bass drops, pop-country has people doing a thing that passes for rapping, Kendrick Lamar is collaborating with Taylor Swift, and that's not even a fraction of its influence.
