Oprah Metal? Now there's a genre that hasn't been explored.

I think you meant Opera... I don't know that I'd call the genre "Opera Metal"... It's more like Symphonic Metal or Neo-Classical or some shit.

I don't think I'd ever given Manowar enough of a chance to know that that's the kind of music they made lol... (After listening to some quick in the course of writing this post, I really don't think they're anything more than plain 'ol Power Metal, which there's nothing wrong with)

I like Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Delain, and (though they could be more considered pop-metal) Amaranthe.

Manowar is definitely power metal, but they do embody the spirit of opera quite often... too often, really. Dude is a hell of a singer though, so I really can't blame them. I was never too big into the symphonic stuff apart from a little later-years Emperor here, and there. I think it's funny a lot of that operatic stuff is referred to as "Beauty and the Beast" metal.

i listened to those, just to get an idea of what this oprah metal is all about.

sounds pretty much like any other metal, cept its a considerably slower tempo than most.  and i can understand the vocals.

that, and the guy enunciates the 't' in metal, unlike basicly anybody in america.

  awfully paranoid, arent you?

Manowar is "traditional" aka heavy metal, but also kinda power metal too. This is "opera metal". I find it a bit too polished for my taste. And yes, there are entirely too many metal sub-genres.

all i know is, if it sounds like a circular saw grinding through a sheet of aluminum, it counts as metal.

my favorite metal sub-genre title is 'metal-metal'.  i have no idea what the fuck that means, but one cat i know says thats all he will listen to.  metal-metal.

That's a new one to me, sounds even more redundant than the term "extreme metal".

i dont remember manowar being quite so cheesey. but then its been well over a decade and a half since i even remember hearing a song from them.

the leader singers voice was deeper, but icould be thinking of another band.

Dont listen to much metal, so i dont know any sub genres.

i like slipknot, 5fdp and soad mostly. i love dragonforce though. i have no idea why.

If you're into opera metal, I definitely recommend these guys

Not really my cup of enema juice but the operatic stuff got ruined for me when I heard Cradle of Filth way back in the day. Every time I hear a beautiful piece of opera style metal I can't shake the fear that Danny Filth is going to creep into it with that stupid cat in heat screech he does and ruin everything the song had going for it. I'm unable to like operatic metal as a result but if I did, I would definitely be into Fleshgod Apocalypse.

@celle2057 Holy shitballs, I couldn't have said that better myself! I made the mistake of sticking around for Cradle's set at Ozzfest in the early 2000's, and it took months for me to regain a decent taste in music. It. Was. Awful.

@novocaine - That (and you referring to it as a "what" rather than a "who" is spot on) is Dani Filth, the lead singer (for a broad value of "singer") of Cradle of Filth.

I'm forced to admit, though, they had like two decent songs. Nymphetamine and (if I remember the songs right) Her Ghost in the Fog.

EDIT: Black Metal fans will likely disown me for saying so, but I also don't care for Dimmu Borgir.

Nah, I'd say Cradle & Dimmu are mostly just gateway bands for that style. Then again, a lot of metal fans love to get up in arms about bullshit & argue about what's "true" so who knows?

I'd say calling them gateway bands is pretty accurate. For better or worse, either one of those bands are a typical foot in the door for a lot of people that are into black/symphonic/operatic/folk/progressive black speed/forfucksakethatlastoneisarealgenre/seriously/ metal.

Glad to see so much hate for Danny (Dani....didn't know and didn't care lol) Filth. Seriously, fuck that guy.

@entrappedmind - lol. i actually used to love cradle of filth when i was like 13. but then i found hip hop. never really enjoyed dimmu bogir though.

metal is quite possibly the worst music in the world for subgenres. its unreal some of the names ive heard over the years and yeah i heard of progressive black speed metal lol

You ain't kidding. It's more of a symptom of rock in general (cuz, technically, Metal is a subgenre of Rock lol), but it really does seem like Metal has more blurred lines between genres than most others. Like "screamo", some of the bands I've heard called screamo, that I'd never even think to categorize as such... It's nuts.

lol that was exactly wht i was thinking. metal in general is just a heavy subgenre of rock. but compare the two nowadays and its completely different. like apples and watermelons.
