ICP are masters of the art of escapism and self-reflection. They put you in another realm of thought, outside of the day-to-day world, where you are given these stories and characters that simply ask you to re-evaluate yourself, in one way or another. They say that wicked (sometimes unforgivable) stuff as well, that is made to deepen the introspection. They use several topics at different times throughout their career. I love how they dabble with and explore the following:

Martial Arts (Ninja, Kickin’ Kickin’, Drunken Ninja Master)

Poverty (Taste, Joke Ya Mind, Take Me Home)

Insanity (Mental Warp, Chris Benoit, Skitsofrantic)

True Friendship (Juggalo Homies…. anything with Juggalo in the title, maybe)

Family Bonds (The Mom Song, Family (hidden track on FFIII)

Horror (Boogie Woogie Wu, all the Halloween tracks)

Bigotry (The Dirtball, Chicken Huntin, Confederate Flag)

Religion (Hellaleujah, Guess My Religion, Where’s God?)

Appreciation (It’s Time, Miracles, Some Fuckin’ How)

Love (Gone, You Should Know, Always (Zug Izland but J wrote it)

Rejection (Behind the Paint, Hate Her to Death, Prom Queen)

Dark Arts (Southwest Voodoo, cigaM kcalB, Truth or Dare)

ICP is the shit. Expand if you will. Stoned as fuck. Been trying to type this for almost 4 hours.

Ok, cliff notes version.

Ive probably mentioned this somewhere on here before. Most genres of music are very limited when it comes to subject matter. This is the genius of what they do.

Because they are cartoonish clowns right out of the gate, they can literally talk about anything they want. Its advantageous both to them and to us that love what they do. They know that they will never be on the radio, and that most normal people are going to hate what they do, so they do what the fuck they want.

They wear the worlds hatred as a badge of pride. It takes the sting off. I used to do the same thing before I lost my baby fat. Id make fat jokes about myself so it didnt hurt me if other people did it. Take their ammo away.

Its a weird comparison to make, but its the same reason Netflix Exclusive shows are always so fucking good. ICP has no middle men and do not have to worry about filtering themselves.

Netflix gives their creators complete creative control over their art. And it is so much better for it. Quit putting your grubby fucking paws in everything and let artists make art.

ICP is truly ahead of their time.

I bet most juggalos would agree that they arent the best rappers, but they are far and away the most creative. These mother fuckers know how to tell a story. Sometimes its cheesy, sometimes its fucking brutal. Sometimes its fun and sometimes its crippling in the ways that it hits home, for me anyways. I listen to different artists for different reasons, but they run the gamut on human emotion AND the human experience.

They just do it in a way that isnt palatable for most people. It takes a special kind of an open mind to appreciate what they do. Ive said this before too, but the ONLY real prerequisite to being a juggalo is to have an open mind.

It makes me sad that I dont like the music they have been putting out. Thats probably more of a knock on myself than them. Maybe their edges have softened over the years, but more likely im just getting old. Either way, im so fucking grateful they have been a part of my life for these last 15 years. It changed me forever.

I swear this has happened to me over a dozen times on Faygoluvers.net.

I’m making it a habit to copy all the text before ever posting something significant and/or long in length, but sometimes I still forget. I’m about to read your second shot at it. Will return!

The only issue I have is with the “aren’t the best rappers” part. I know I’ve said it on here before but they really are the best story tellers in rap, period. That’s including rappers today and yesteryear. That gets dismissed a lot when discussing them because their stories happen to be so absurd that you lose sight of the fact that they’re taking you along with them when they do backflips off of telephone poles and/or killing various evil-doers, but, regardless of how over the top the idea is, they can somehow convince you that it’s happening.

That’s a talent that is usually only found in “classic” authors.

No shit?  Bummer. Man, there’s so much good ICP the last 7 years or so. Bang! Pow! Boom!, Death Pop, House of Wax, Phantom, TMML: The Outtakes.

To be considered a great of all time you have to have an undeniable talent. They don’t have the technical ability, or the lyrical ability it takes to be considered the best rappers. That’s a fact. You can see the lack of ability in that department a lot during their best years by adding wacky ass random rhymes which is easily thrown under the rug by their gimmick. Their clowns and clowns do random wacky shit so they can get away with it, and it’s also become a part of the aesthetic that people love. But lets not blow things out of proportion.

For story telling, yes they are good story tellers and deserve a spot in hip hop for their signature story telling, but I wouldn’t rank them up as the best story tellers in hip hop. Because they are not clever enough. Compare them to Kendrick Lamar. They have concept albums where there is a very loose concept for the album but really the tracks don’t tell a bigger story and typically have nothing to do with each other. Kendrick Lamar does concept albums that tell a cohesive story through out the album. Like mind blowing stories and concepts that are actually relative to how the tracks fit together. Or how he took a small story about a homeless guy asking him for change and fleshed it out into the complex introspective question of morality. They have not gotten story telling down to that level. Eminem told one of the greatest stories in hip hop, Stan. They have never made a song with such a deep and personal examination of their culture. Or Lupe Fiasco who can tell a story with multiple meanings running at once. Like Prisoner 1 & 2 being about his friend in a modern day prison paralleling the prisoner crucified by jesus paralleling his time being signed with the record label he was on that was holding his albums hostage and making him change his sound etc. And that prison guard trying to keep prisoners in jail because he’s jealous that they get to leave when their sentence is over crazy. So those people are the best story tellers. ICP are good at what they do in the story telling department, but the are not in the G.O.A.T. league of story telling.

But, if Lil’ Wayne gets considered one of the Hip Hop greats, then ICP should too.

In the grand scale of rappers of course it’s going to be a small league. It has to be a small leage, it’s the G.O.A.T. of story telling. The Hannibal series is hands down better story telling, but I can’t deny the appeal of Friday The 13th.

Yes, but only ICP would rap about fucking a beehive.

Seriously though, I much prefer the style of ICP’s storytelling. It’s more cohesive and vivid to me. Perhaps I just cant as easily recognize the genius of people like Kendrick Lamar, if it’s even really there. I don’t care to.

Great storytellers in hip hop? Masta Ace. Immortal Technique. Slick Rick.

Nas has been called the greatest, I feel that is bullshit. He doesn’t even sound like hes telling stories. Maybe that’s his “elusive genius” that a feeble mind like mine cannot comprehend, it’s possible.

I just would rather hear the story entitled “Out” rapped by Violent J than Nas “New York State of Mind”. And I’m from NY, too. If Warlock read those last few sentences, his head would explode lol

I don’t like Lupe Fiasco’s voice, nor Eminem’s. I recognize their talent, just not my preference. Maybe I’m just a fool, I dunno. I think Jay-Z is outrageously overrated, yet the worst of all is what I call The Drake Illusion. No one will ever be able to convince me that Drake is one of those Golden G.O.A.T.’s. Never.

So it’s easy to consider ICP the best story tellers when you willfully ignore what the others are doing just like the industry is doing with ICP.

But really, it’s about what you like more. I’m just saying that they are not the greatest story tellers period. Some people prefer Saints Row over GTA because the vibe is a lot more fun to them. That’s really what it is. GTA is hands down the best story teller of the two, but I wouldn’t dismiss the Saints Row story because it had Rowdy Fucking Piper in a They Live throw back. Who the hell else has that?

I woulda went for something more like Mental Warp for Delirium, or possibly something more nonsensical like Scatter Brain. Interesting idea to put the two together though. I wish Gaiman would fuck with juggalos. He did a story with Alice Cooper where Alice Cooper did an album and then he wrote a comic taking the story line further. Would be fascinating to see him work with ICPs mythology. Maybe in American Gods season 17, shadow can go to the Gathering of the Juggalos lol.

Side note, did you ever get to see @cheshyr ‘s little endless tattoo?

As for the rest of the thread, fwiw, I mostly agree with Lucem but disagree in some other ways.

ICP are fantastic story tellers. What gets called “the greatest” is usually a matter of taste and I’m OK with that. People will gravitate towards what resonates with them. I think ICP get undersold for their ability to tell stories though, because of their lack of formal education. J does absolutely brilliant things in terms of story structure that you can’t really find in other “great story teller” songs by other artists. Kendrick is a brilliant rapper and easily one of the best modern writers in pop music. His words are poetry, to the fullest.

A lot of horrorcore rappers like to compare themselves to Edgar Allen Poe or Stephen King, but, in our world, none of them tell stories as good as ICP, hands down. And no disrespect to Prozak (who is dope and who I fuck with 100%) but saying you’re edgar allen poe isn’t the same as being able to write a story like the tell tale heart or amy’s in the attic.

If you really believed that all lives matter we wouldn't need to say black lives matter

I don’t think ICP are the greatest storytellers ever in rap. Nor do I totally dismiss Kendrick Lamar.

So if The ROC is “The Stephen King of rap” and Prozak is “The Hitchcock of hip-hop”, then who is the Clive Barker?

Is Blahzay the Anne Rice of hip-hop?

Blaze claimed he was “Randall Flagg of The Stand” which is cool. Probably one the one of the coolest things that Dead Homie has ever said.
