Degrees of freedom is the number of dimensions of the domain of a random vector. It matters terms of data collection where you need to know how many different types of data (dimensions) will be necessary to resolve an actual direction to the data… to form a mathematical conclusion. Not sure how it applies to statistics but I use it in search algorithms where the search space is hyper-multidimensional with extremely large dimensional lengths. Like when doing prediction algorithms.
