GWAR: Behind the Gore • DECIBEL EXCLUSIVE

Decibel Magazine recently provided an exclusive, gore-soaked peek behind the curtain of a GWAR show, highlighting the dedication of the production crew who make the legendary spectacle possible. The video details the intense logistics required to transform every venue, starting with covering the stage in plastic and laying down carpets to protect the floor and prevent performers from slipping on the signature spew. The crew manages multiple spew tanks filled with a hyperallergenic food dye—which stains skin and clothes—and must constantly discuss how much of the room will get wet to protect equipment like light trusses and speakers. Beyond the blood, the production is highly technical, with sound engineers managing consistent audio and lighting designers aiming for a look “somewhere between a mix of the space jockey ship on Aliens and a ridiculously violent fever dream.” The tour manager notes the physical toll on the band members, who have been performing for 40 years, and confirms that the crew goes through nearly 100 towels daily to clean up after the show. Ultimately, the crew views their work as contributing to a “legendary” and “selfless” artistic project that they believe deserves a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for its unique contribution to Shock Rock.
