“The last time the Midwest got a look at horrorcore rap pioneer Esham, he had some kind of breakdown on stage while opening for Insane Clown Posse at their annual Halloween show in Detroit. During the show, Esham looked confused and eventually laid down on the stage, cutting his set short.

So what happened that night?

“That never happened to me before. I got a phone call with some terrible news that a family member had passed away and I thought I had it all together. But by the time I hit the stage, I just couldn’t take it anymore, just with everything going on in my life,” said the rapper born Esham Smith, who will be coming to Frankie’s on Saturday as the headliner for the venue’s 4/20 Show.

“The show at Frankie’s will see the rapper perform with a full live band. Promoter Broc Curry said he’s “thrilled” to bring Esham to Frankie’s on 4/20, the unofficial annual holiday for marijuana enthusiasts.
the 1980s crack epidemic came to the Motor City and suddenly Esham saw his neighborhood change from a “Garden of Eden” to a burned out shell where you didn’t venture out after dark. All of this negative change affected the young man deeply, and inspired by the early rap albums of the late ’70s and early ’80s, Esham began to rap and create beats using a beat up Casio keyboard.”

“Using what little he had, the always resourceful Esham cobbled together a makeshift studio in his bedroom, which led to the recording of his early DIY productions.”

“I had duct tape and glue keeping everything together. My microphone was on a milk crate and I would record pre-productions and I had enough to where I had an album of them. I booked a 10 hour studio block and out of that 10 hours, I got Boomin’ Words from Hell. (Famed Detroit music producer) Mike E. Clark was the engineer on that album,” said Esham.”

“Though Esham was influenced by early hip hop groups, he felt just as home in the world of pop and rock ‘n’ roll.”
