New Radio.com Interview with Tech N9ne; Discusses Kansas City, Independent Grind, His Dark Barbeque Festival and More!

For those who may have missed it, a new interview with Tech N9ne has been published by Radio.com. I’m currently trying to find the exact date the interview took place, however it appears to be fairly recent. He talks about a variety of topics during the video, including his recent placement on the 20 Wealthiest Hip Hop Artists list by Forbes (Tech came in at number 18) and his plans to create his own three-day music festival.

For those unable to stream the video below, here’s some of the main topics discussed:

  • His life and upbringing in Kansas City
  • Being named as “Hip Hop’s Secret Mogul” and his pride in his success
  • Being an independent artist and being able to make his own decisions
  • What “Independent Grind” means: getting out there and touring and promoting without TV or radio
  • Working with Serj Tankian and being a fan of System of a Down, his desire to work with Slipknot
  • Being a fan of The Doors and being able to work with them
  • Strange Music would like to plan their own summer festival, “The Dark Barbeque,” which would be a three-day event featuring different barbeque foods from the American Midwest along with musical guests, such as Slipknot, Ice Cube, Eminem and more (these were only examples given by Tech, there is no confirmation that these acts are already lined up)

For those wishing to read the article Radio.com put out with the interview, click here or the link below. Here are a few highlights from the post:

“I wanted to keep it a secret. When people feel like to won the lottery, they call you,” the rapper himself laughed when asked about the Forbes article during a recent interview with Radio.com. “When you make that much money, I guess they have to report it. I’m proud of it. We’re steadily on the incline, and it’s a blessing to be able to do it independent.”

“Their music and fusion of sounds is so dark carnival, and that’s so me, the killer clown. I’ve been a fan of their [The Doors] music since way back, since I can’t even remember when. I had no idea that I’d ever get the chance to work with them,” Tech N9ne remembered of the collaboration. “Right before Ray (Manzarek) passed, we did this. I had no idea that he was sick or anything. I don’t even know if he knew. But we were drinking wine and everything in the studio, John Densmore was so laid back, Robby Krieger was cool as hell. I went to go visit Jim Morrison in Paris at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in 2010. I told him thank you. I had no idea I was going to work with his homeboys. It was a dream come true, because I named my label Strange Music because of their music. back when I was smoking weed hella…”

“We’ve been planning it for a long time. It’s called the Dark Barbeque,” he explained of his festival plans which would emphasize the city’s legendary food. “It’ll probably be a three-day thing. One day (it could) be Slipknot playing, the next night it might be Ice Cube and Brother Lynch and Tech N9ne, the third night could be Eminem, I don’t know. It’s just got to be humongous.”

What do you all think of the prospect of Strange Music putting on a festival? I know I would definitely be there!
