DJ Paul of Da Mafia 6ix Discusses Gangsta Boo’s Departure from the Group; Upcoming ‘Watch What U Wish’ Album

Last month, HipHopDX.com conducted an interview with DJ Paul of Da Mafia 6ix (formerly Three 6 Mafia) in which they touch on a variety of subjects, mainly the overall evolution of the group from then till now and their upcoming album, ‘Watch What U Wish.’ The interview was released in a series of articles over the past few weeks, which I have done my best to condense together for you..

According to DJ Paul, the original intent of Da Mafia 6ix was to be a one-album reunion tour, but the fan response was too incredible to ignore. When asked about their recent tour, the Triple 6ix Sinners Tour, he responded “..nobody was gonna get rich off it, but it was done to make the fans happy. This was supposed to be a one-album reunion tour, do the tour, then do our own thing.” In regards to their forthcoming album, he stated “..we got so many songs left over and we started recording new songs and the fans started asking for an album…”

When speaking about the new album, DJ Paul explained that “It’s still gonna have the old stuff on it, it’s still gonna be gritty and grimy, but it’ll have a taste of the newer flavor on there.” He further explained that the production had been stepped up a level, as they didn’t want to be “one of those groups stuck in the old sound.”

Also while discussing ‘Watch What U Wish,’ DJ Paul informed HipHopDX that based on a mutual decision, on-and-off member Gangsta Boo would be departing from the group, and would not be part of the new album. “It was what we thought was going to be best for everybody. It just happened. Nobody forced nobody. It was a gut feeling.” However, he did reveal that recently-deceased Lord Infamous would be featured on the album, although he did not say in what capacity. It was, afterall, Lord Infamous’ idea to form Da Mafia 6ix, which was one of the reasons the group brought his casket along with them on the Triple 6ix Sinners Tour.

‘Watch What U Wish’ is expected to be released this coming October. The title, as explained by DJ Paul, has a special significance: “Everything you want in life might not be what you need, so you always got to watch what you wish for because if you keep wanting it and keep setting your goals to get it, you can get it… you gotta really watch what you wish for and let things naturally come to you.”
