Real Detroit Weekly recent caught up with Legz Diamond. In this interview Legz Diamond discusses the DMA’s, Insane Clown Posse, his solo work, and more. You can read the full interview below.

From Real Detroit Weekly:

Rich Murrell, a.k.a. Legz Diamond, has been working with Insane Clown Posse for about 20 years. He is best known for his excellent guitar and vocal work. Over the past year, Legz Diamond has released his debut album, and is performing at this year’s Detroit Music Awards on 4/25. We got a chance to sit down with this gracious and hard-working man to find out a little bit more about what makes him tick.

In past years, the Detroit Music Awards has shown much clown love and respect to Psychopathic Records. This year, Legz Diamond & The Purple Gang are scheduled to perform at the awards on 4/25. How did this come about?

My good friend Gary Graff did a wonderful piece on my album, 9 Pistolas, in his newspaper column last year. After the interview, he asked if we would present an award at last year’s Detroit Music Awards, and we gratefully accepted. After the presentation he graciously offered us a spot on this year’s performance line-up, and of course we jumped at the chance.

How did you feel when you got the invite?

Truly honored. Detroit has such a wealth and history of musical talent and the DMAs are the crown jewel of our city’s entertainment industry. To be offered a chance to perform in front of our peers at such an auspicious occasion is akin to playing at the Grammys.

How are you preparing for the performance?

The same way I prepare for all tours and performances – rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! Being a singer is like being an athlete, proper training is one of the keys to success.

The past year has been major for you because you released your debut album, 9 Pistolas, on Psychopathic Records. What has the past year been like for you?

2013 was a year of triumphs for me. 9 Pistolas received praise across the board from music critics, we had a successful run as a support act on the third leg of ICP’s Mighty Death Pop tour and to cap it all off, 9 Pistolas made the Top Ten Albums of 2013 in another Detroit weekly entertainment magazine. I am both humbled and inspired by the outpouring of support.

Are you planning a follow-up album already?

I have been doing some writing and have what I think might be the first single and a few other supporting songs outlined and ready for pre-production. We’re still not done supporting 9 Pistolas though, and we have a few more tricks up our sleeve before we hit the studio again.

What inspires you?

Seeing other independent acts rise from obscurity to greatness is endlessly inspiring to me. Witnessing Arcade Fire go from playing the Magic Bag to headlining the Palace, seeing Jack White selling out the Masonic Temple, hearing Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life” on a Carnival Cruise ship television commercial, it gives the rest of us indies hope to continue pursuing our dreams.

What is on your schedule for the rest of 2014?

I am gearing up to hit the studio with ICP for the next Jokers Card, and that will demand a block of our time. After that we are looking forward to our sophomore performance at this years 15th Annual Gathering of the Juggalos. Last year’s performance was a smashing success, and we are planning for an even bigger and better show this year. I also have hopes of finally releasing a music video in support of 9 Pistolas, but with our schedules quickly filling up it remains to be seen whether or not we can bring it to fruition.

Tell us what Psychopathic Records means to you and what it’s like to be a part of the Psychopathic Family.

I have been working for Psychopathic for what will be my 20th year as of 2014. Two decades together with friends that I am closer to than my own family. Psychopathic Records could be used as a blueprint for success by any independent record label and has in fact and continues to be shamelessly copied. But the only secret to our success is really no secret at all – hard work, putting in the grind and going above and beyond the call of duty. I tell all aspiring artists if you are not willing to invest in yourself then why should anybody else want to? I have always thought of the Psychopathic Family as being the Motown of the underground. We support one another by guesting on each other’s studio projects, touring together, doing cameos, et cetera. When we holla ‘Fam-i-ly!’ it has a profound and very literal meaning to all of us.

@86 I think they counted the tour in Australia as the 2nd. And when ICP wuz asked if they were gunna do another leg of TMDP! Tour they said technically it will be the other leg of the tour but it wont be called that. But otherwise imo this is a good interview, and cant wait for a new Legz Diamond album or Legz Diamond & The Purple Gang album.

9 Pistolas is dope. The title track and Tommy Guns get me groovin’ every time. I’d love to see them live.
