I never understood the term “Real hip hop” as opposed to “fake” hip hop? Like who cares about what’s lyrical and what’s not, they sound significantly different and that’s ok but who’s the person that decides they need to be separated. I’m 31 years old, grew up listening to Nas, Pac, Biggie, Big L, Lost Boyz, Mobb deep, Pun, etc.. and I still fuck with the new generation.. anyways maybe I didn’t need to put my two cents in this thread but it’s been bothering me for a long time.

Like, for the most part I understand the general terminology when it comes to lyrical rap and whatever the new music is labeled as (Trap, Drill, Rap, etc.) but to add the word “REAL” to the hip hop genre just pisses me off.. Anyways that’s just an opinion from one ninja to another..

it’s super pretentious, however when you’re in the shoes of a super dedicated EMCEE, REAL just FEELS like the most appropriate term..

i dont like using the term anymore cuz i have a similar reaction when others use it.. they have to be super-fire for me to accept the term.. the average dude listening to fake/corny/commercial shit isnt gonna care or have their interest peaked by “real” or “lyrical”.. only fellow rappers who are aspiring to be the illest care about “real” or “lyrical” hip hop.. and that IS NOT the demographic to go for cuz most of us arent taking ANY time checkin out other random aspiring rappers.. id be shocked if the dude who started this thread has listened to 5 random rappers this year, on fb or youtube claimin’ to be lyrical..
