is Slaughterhouse underground?
- no
- yes
Crooked I and Joell Ortiz are definitely underground emcees as solo artists. Sure, Crooked has guested on several platinum and gold albums and Ortiz knows all the big name emcees in NY but i’d be hard pressed to call them anything but underground.
Joe Budden had a few radio hits back in the day (mostly Pump It Up but he had mixtape buzz too) and was also known for beefing w/ people and who he was banging (Tahiry)
Royce and Slaughterhouse both feel underground but the fact they have the Eminem relationship makes me not consider them underground as a group. If Em never existed then I think Royce would be known as the best lyrical emcee Detroit ever produced but he wouldn’t have much exposure.
Slaughterhouse’s shady record album had some incredible songs on it but also had quite a few songs that were too mainstream to fit their styles and even a few Eminem features didn’t make that thing sell. It doesn’t help that Em didn’t even give them a feature on his previous albums (unless you count itunes only tracks). Marketing failure at it’s finest but maybe they’ll blow up whenever the hell they drop their next album with Just Blaze.

Not really underground not really mainstream to me. They do come off as “underground” in a lot of their verse thought which is tight.
Remember, even Em was underground back in the day. Listen to the Slim Shady EP, that’s some wicked underground shit right there.

i dont consider them underground anymore.. basically once they signed that dotted line with Shady (in conjuction w/a major) they became a mainstream act.. i also dont see how buddens mainstream success a decade ago makes him not underground now.. so icp was mainstream during the 6th? i mean they’re all indie solo artist but together a mainstream act so i just classify them as mainstream individually as well.. hell from bad meets evil alone royce is def the biggest/most mainstream of the 4.. what do you mean by mainstream? im talkin exposure level & how much of a household name they are.. not how commercial the music sounds or some stupid shit like that..

i will say i wish ’em the best tho man.. imo every fan of hip hop should be coppin their shit.. straight up it dont ever matter if you think its wack.. i dont think those corny muthafuckas have the right to complain about hip hop suckin nowadays if they aint coppin/supportin talent at this level & exposure… cuz imo cosigning them is cosigning the movement & emceeing.. regardless which is a step in the right direction imo for emceeing & lyricism..

First off, nobody cares about you’re opinion.
But I do think that people should stop bitching about the state of music in general. It’s dumb.

so muthafuckas have no right to complain unless they deliberately buy wack music…
because, it supports emceeing as a ‘movement’, whatever that means [must mean, ‘as a commercial enterprise’].
gonna hafta disagree.
