I read “all you need is somebody to master yourshit” and I'm on this like cheese on double pattied hamburger.
I do mixing and mastering. I do it for 25$ each song. That's both the mixing and the mastering for the songs. Email [email protected] if you are interested.
I prefer to work with good quality recordings because working with bad recordings is a bitch and some times just can't be saved.
You could always look up studios in your area which typically cost about 45$ an hour to record in or, if you have a decent place to do it in, record at home. To do that you will want to have a very quiet room that blocks out as much sound as possible.
I did a bit of research on equipment (since I don't know shit about equipment myself) and from what I read the Shure SM58 is the best mic you can get for cheap. It's a really good vocal mic for $100 and I read that it can take a ton of screaming with out distorting, which is a really really good thing, trust me. I have recorded in studios that have mics that do distort pretty easily, and that always sucks. You need a pop filter which goes from $20-$40. I never knew what those were called until now. Pop filters will help it so when you make a B sound or a P sound it doesn't sound like an extra kick, kind of tones it down. With out one a B or P sound might distort the vocals. You also need a mic cover. Those are really cheap. Like from $2-$10. Mic covers help stop it from distorting too. It's like a little cushion that blocks out the harshness of the voice that makes the mic distort. The Studio I used to go to replaced the mic covers and pop filters frequently, I can't imagine why they did it but I bet there is a reason.

I actually just had a vocal booth built in my basement but I still need to order the acoustic foam to block sound from bouncing off of the walls and back into the microphone. Instead most of the sound is just absorbed into the foam. Also it is funny that you say it, but I already have a sm58 for vocals and sm57 for instrument but we are going to buy a KSM-42 for vocals and KSM-141 for instruments to increase the recording quality. The next problem we will then have is the mixing and mastering. I have only used fruity loops myself, and even though we have pro tools we have never actually had a computer that has been able to handle it. All these songs are 2+ years old and now everything is falling into place with the vocal booth so hopefully we can make some CDs (even tho most people don't buy CDs anymore) and start doing shows to get our name out there…

Seems that you do know your shit when it comes to equipment, better than I do.
Go to the Producer's School thread for ideas, tips and info on mixing and mastering. I too have a crappy computer that I do everything on (except record) and I've been working on the M/M of this song all day because of it. Going and tweaking bits in the instrumental session then having to save that then save the mixing session then work on the master session. Making one change in either the instrumental session or the mixing session results in me having to save and transfer the new shit to the session on top of that one. Not only that but I can't fully listen to the instrumental session because my laptop can't handle it. Hopefully it's worth all the work though.
