all these comic movies fuckin suck..make them good like dark knight was with an actually good director.only good one that wasnt batman is avengers, still wasnt that great.Fuck Disney

Well that’s just, like, your opinion, man. The Dark Knight is way overrated, Ledger gave a great performance but he essentially carried the movie. Bale never felt right for Batman to me, I already prefer Batflec.

Chris Nolan isn’t the only “good” director to touch a comic flick, that’s just the style you apparently prefer, it doesn’t necessarily make it better. I’m not sure I understand your beef with Disney. The Avengers had been planned before Disney bought out marvel, Tony Stark appearing post credits in The Incredible Hulk being some compelling evidence. Marvel Studios, from what I understand, acts pretty much independently from their daddy corporation. Disney’s involvement is more financial than creative.

Plus there’s plenty of good comic adaptations that aren’t Batman nor Marvel. Watchmen, Hellboy, Red, Scott Pilgrim, hell I don’t even like Super Man, yet I thought Man of Steel was dope.

yes it is my opinion, and in my opinion dark knight is dope as fuck.im not some nolan/batman fanboy its just a fact that is a good fuckin movie and in my opinion most comic movies fail in comparison so I dont watch them anymore.Like  I said I liked Avengers.Any involvement in any film is always going to be more financial than creative, thats why we have all these shitty movies.Someone like Nolan is an artist and can have creative control over his films because he makes a shit load of money from them just like jj abrams now can do that too.Why I hate Disney is because they always make shit watered down,Alice in wonderland with Tim Burton would have been dope if he had creative control over it.Same with Sam Raimi with Wizard of oz bullshit…We know these dudes can make dope shit but they cant with no freedom.Evil dead great example of total freedom.Raimi went to big studios with Spiderman and became a totally diffent person/director.Danny Elfman has said shit in interviews about that shit..

The quality of Dark Knight, like any movie, isn’t fact. Yeah, it is generally regarded as a great movie, that doesn’t mean it’s a great movie for everyone. Like music, taste in film is subjective.

Disney can tend to be conservative, but I don’t feel like they’re as greedy with creative freedoms as you make them out to be. Maybe Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland just sucked because of Tim Burton. And I actually liked Oz the Great and Powerful. Drag Me to Hell was my shit, too, so if he’s changed then I don’t really mind who he’s become.

i more or less agree.

even the ben affleck part, though hes a terrible choice.  but then, bale is basicly always terrible.

watchmen and hellboy are about as good as it ever gets, comics-movies-wise.

hell, watchmen was [and still is] considered unfilmable.  that zack snyder pulled of what he did was impressive on its own.

  awfully paranoid, arent you?

Shit the way they did the Venom character in Spidey 3 is like watching your oldest most loved pet get slowly squished by a tractor wheel. Venom is my favorite character of all comics, I used to draw him all the time. Constantly. Shit this Philippino homie wanted to rap an EP with me and have my alias be Venom and his Carnage. That is some shit right thur lol… they put that wiener boy from That 70’s Show as Eddie Brock and didn’t even pay much attention to him. He looked like a joke in CGI as well. Fuck that movie.

Disney is a creeping evil that will over take us all… :P

Once upon a time, Disney didn’t want to have their name on Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas because they thought it was “too dark”… and sent it to their subsidiary Touchstone Pictures. I still my my VHS copy that says “Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas”. NOW it says, “DISNEY’S Nightmare…”

Disney owned distribution for the movie “Princess Mononoki” but BURIED it with no advertising and limited theaters so they could promote that piece of shit “Treasure Planet” (remember that?). It was only AFTER it got nominated for a slew of awards including  a few OSCARS that they wanted to slap their name on it. Now they got their mitts in every Studio Ghibli production.

Jim Henson… sigh… The only thing they *didn’t get was his Creature Shop. Every time I see “DISNEY’s Muppets” at the top of anything, I throw up in my mouth a little… As I said they’re doing with Marvel characters/teams, they’ve downplayed all the other Muppets to focus on the formula of “Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy; Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy” wash rinse repeat. As well as all but *removing all the more adult elements and ‘wink-wink-nudge’ references that were inherent to the “brand”.

Disney owns EVERY toy company that made EVERY toy from EVERY cartoon we grew up watching. From Transformers and He-Man all the way up to friggin’ Captain Planet. They own all the cereals we used to eat watching ’em too! Along with McDonald’s…

It doesn’t matter that another movie studio is producing Marvel’s movies. All they’re getting is (while still a lot) the right to *make the movie, distribute it, advertise it, and receive a *percentage of any franchising. DISNEY still owns the characters. If they don’t want Mickey Mouse, ‘er I mean Wolverine, to drink beer and chomp cigars or be generally unwashed as he was known… he ain’t gonna be. If they don’t want THEIR characters to be depicted as or deal with issues like race, genocide, drugs, torture, incest et al, you won’t see it. Regardless. You will NEVER see Wolverine crucified out in the desert being repeatedly disemboweled by the Reavers. Shit, you saw what happened to Lady Deathstrike!

Let me put it to you another way… Back in the day, I used to work at the Virgin Megastore in Downtown Disney in Orlando. It was a record store (remember those? Sold CDs n’shit? also books. ‘memba *those?), well, there wasn’t/isn’t a Virgin Records on the PLANET that had a dress code. None. You wore what you wanted. The only thing they had was a red lariat everyone wore. Except US… Disney enforces a dress code. Because the store was on Disney property, they required all employees of Virgin to wear polos and follow their grooming guidelines (no long hair, no beards etc). I’ve got horror stories a-plenty of that place. Forced shavings and dead bodies. No shit. But I digress… The ONLY thing we did differently than the parks was that we were the ONLY ones in all of Disney that were allowed to wear *jeans. And let me tell you, other Disney employees were always on our shit about that, as well as constantly censoring what books/magazines and music we carried. I worked 2nd floor books. They made me move the ENTIRE graphic novel section because it was too close to EROTIC LITERATURE!! Have you SEEN the tits in comics?! And they were worried about kids *reading about them…pfft… We used to say that “Virgin cuts the checks but Disney writes the rules”.

Years later they turned that *huge space into a single floor tent pole “museum” about the Titanic (*years after the movie with nothing to do with it. Just a tourist trap).

So keep that in yer noggin whenever anyone wants to point out that a separate company is making those Marvel movies. If they want Wolvey to shave his beard and wear polo shirts… we will see it. Oh wait…

ALL of the last round of Marvel movies were all contracted to have *potentially been made (contingent on their success) years ago. The content wasn’t decided on but the laying of claims to the intellectual property of adding a number to end of them was. Just like we’re reading here that Tatum ALREADY has two more movies lined up.

The old contracts haven’t run out. But they’re getting there. Disney is evil. Avert your eyes.

I can’t say that Disney ain’t at times shady as fuck, but for the most part they seem to be letting Marvel do what they do. And I’m not entirely convinced of the “Micky, Minnie, Donald, Goofy” cycle either. They’re introducing new characters like Ant Man and Guardians of the Galaxy into the mix (both being lesser known properties so they deserve props for backing them), and the procession ain’t all that cut and dry, Iron Man having three films to the Hulk’s one. I definitely prefer the MCU method to Fox’s, they can’t even seem to keep their own continuity.

Strictly responding to this and not “comin’ atcha” ‘er nuthin…

(Please excuse the geek nostalgia)

The new X-Men is based on a very transformative and “important” storyline within what was once the Marvel Universe. In the original, it was -Kitty Pryde- that was sent back in time to convince the younger incarnations of what would become mortal enemies of the need to unite towards a common goal against the Sentinels… In the new canon, *Wolverine is the one sent back (through even more storyline dubious means but I’m not on that here).

Once upon a time Kitty Pryde was a very important character to Wolverine’s backstory (before Jubilee came around and turned into his “Robin” (and *still got buried in the movies) but the entire notion that a little *girl whos “only power” was to pass through matter like a ghost, was tapped with such a monumental task as forming an army against an enemy that wouldn’t exist for another generation… (I hope you’re catching on here)… is taking a back seat to a formula.

What was once a potentially empowering story of a young, female and for all intents *tertiary character fell to the wayside of Disney mocking up their Marvel version of Mickey Mouse (ie Wolverine) in the role of what would have otherwise been considered one of Donald Duck’s nephews getting top billing.

Every Marvel movie has rearranged the tone and intent of stories so as to spotlight their own Disney approach to the “Our Gang Collective” just like I’ve mentioned they’ve done with the Muppets. Kermit used to be the figurehead of something that grew larger than him and now Disney shrinks it back down to focus on Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo et al OR Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy…

Nobody is going to see these movies *without knowing what “should” be going on. Or what was. Did anyone see “Star Trek: Into Darkness” without knowing it was a warped copy of Wrath of Khan? Did anyone not feel like SPOCK yelling out “KHAN!!!” was a completely different “thing” than when Capt. Kirk did it after having been left on a planet to die along with having killed his son…?

Just because the bullet points are the same doesn’t mean that the overall effect on the entirety of the story hasn’t been greatly changed with a “simple” shuffling of proper names. Mutated if you will… ;P

Gawd help us all as they set us up for the Infinity Crisis and Thanatos… Ugh, sorry. I’m an old skool comics geek.

Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy…

Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy…

Random fact: I bought my copy of Black Rain from this store, some days before it was supposed to hit shelves.

In any case, I feel your pain, but there’s a fatal flaw in your problem: Film is different than literature, graphic novel or otherwise.

The fact is, which would anyone not familiar with the comic books prefer to see? A film where a relatively lesser-known comic heroin with few powers stars, or one where fucking Wolverine, sarcastic, pissed off, cigar chewin’ badass Wolver-fucking-ine, is the star? It’s always going to be the latter, always. And that works out for them for multiple reasons. For one, it’s a star-power draw. It puts the asses in seats which brings in the money which allows these films to be made with the extravagant budgets that have become part and parcel of them. Anything else is considered a risk. And, don’t get me wrong, risks are great. Hell, risks often times make for better films. Risks do not, however, guarantee a summer blockbuster. They do not guarantee making a profit. Which is what not just Disney, but ultimately all business models are aimed to do. This is why it’s been such an uphill struggle to get a Deadpool movie made. (Oh, God, please. Please, please, please, let it get made.) It would be a risk; a relatively lesser known character in what would have to be an R-Rated film. That’s a huge risk.

The second part of this is that Wolverine is, like it or not, much more interesting in a film medium. Kitty Pryde’s fine for comics, as you have more time, more text, more that you can draw out from that character. However, with film, you’ve got about two hours to work with, on average. Two hours to explore all plot points, to play out action, comedy, romance, tragedy, etc. Unless it’s a movie geared solely towards being a Kitty Pryde vehicle, which this storyline isn’t, by any means, you’re not going to have much time to flesh out that character, to make the audience bond with her. Whereas with Wolverine, you’ve got an immediately established character. Not just established, but one who already lends himself to great action, great comedy, and who audiences already have a rapport with. Really ask yourself, if you hadn’t read the comics, which would you be more hyped to see: Wolverine saves the world, or some chick played by Ellen Page saves the world?

Can this suck, the changeover from one medium to another, and the sacrifices which get made along the way? Absolutely. When you’ve come to know and love something in one way, and see it translated into a completely different way, it feels wrong. Hell, The Beach is one of my favorite novels. And anyone who’s seen the film can probably guess my feelings about that piece of shit. But typically, if you turn off your “THIS IS DIFFERENT!” kneejerk, and take the film for what it is, the reason for most of the changes can be not just understood, but enjoyed.

…Except for Richard fucking both Francoise and Sal. Seriously, Alex Garland, what the fuck, man? What. The. Fuck?

(Also, I don’t know what Muppets movies you’ve been watching, but the most recent one was excellent, and had relatively little Gonzo or Fozzie, in lieu of more time spent on Sam Eagle, Walter, and Animal.)

It’s hardly fair to pin Wolverine’s starring role on Disney though. Did Disney force Fox Studios to make Wolverine the mutant poster-boy? Fuck nah, the first three X-men flicks were all Wolverine movies. It was already in effect before the mouse got involved.

I ain’t even all that upset about the liberties they take with it, I’ve never read most of the original comics anyhow. I never had the funds, storage space, or even any place to get all the comic books I’d have liked to collect growing up. I’ve got a collection of maybe two dozen graphic novels/trade paperbacks, and the rest of my knowledge comes from the internet, video games, cartoons and even the movies. Maybe I’d be more upset about how badly the films deviate if my love for comics actually originated from the source.

Whatever, I’m still gonna go watch Days of Future Past tomorrow.

I saw it last night and it was dope. Definitely my favorite of the X-Men films so far, and way more satisfying than the recent Spider-Man. It was also the first movie I’ve seen in 3D, so that was cool I guess.
