Hatchet Herald 5/22/2015

If you’re going to be at the 2015 Gathering of the Juggalos, here is your chance to be in a Psychopathic Records filmed and produced Juggalo Psypher music video! This may be a once in a lifetime event! Those wishing to compete should show up on Thursday or Friday (1:30pm to 4:30pm) fill out an info card and wait their turn to rap for 16-20 bars before a panel of judges (a beat will be provided). The judges will then rate each performer on flow, lyrical ingenuity and stage presence. The names of the top four rappers chosen by the judges will then be posted at the Info Booth on Friday Night at 6pm. Those chosen will then return on Saturday at 1:30pm to perform in a Juggalo Psypher music video (we will provide the film crew). This video will then be edited and posted on Psychopathic Records YouTube Channel, as well as all of our websites and social media pages. As if that weren’t enough it will also be premiered on The Juggalo Show podcast. So here it is on a platter. Your chance to showcase your talents to the world!

So who's gonna try it?

What does "rap for 16-20 bars" means. What is a "bar"?

A bar is a verse pretty much, I think. And no I won't be trying this out.

a bar is a measurement in music..

"so there you are youre sittin there just kinda chillin,   1

a richie boy you look a lil bit like dylan."   2

thats the 1st 2 lines/bars of the verse.. not to be confused with rhymes, rappers like myself will squeeze 4 multisyllabic rhymes in 2 bars

"my pen game was phenomenal now its astronomical,   1

its comical how you think that im not on a role."   2

(although i suck apparently...) the average verse has 16 bars.. theyll prob give people a minute each instead of count em as they rap..

also ftr "bars!" is a recently popular slang term for really good punchlines..

Whatever a bar is has always confused me. Talk about measurements and my mind just wanders away.

soooo....i was always under the impression that a Psypher was to "Showcase" what your record company was about and the talent on that record company....an "introduction" to people might not listen to everyone, like a company Demo...

I think if you're not doing some really good storytelling, it's practically expected to have polysyllabic rhymes.

I guess to me it is. If they storytelling is great, I don't care that much about lyricism, but if you're shitty at both, you need to try harder.

I have zero stage presence, so probably not.

Is there anyone going to the gathering that has the look and stage presence, and delivery to pull this off? We can all help with the lyrics and stuff till it's a work of gold. It's a little under 2 months away.

not to get anyones hopes up...  but i may, possibly, maybe, have a sliver of hope of makin it home this year, after all.

its a longshot, to be sure.  but some chance is better than no chance, and no chance is what i had two days ago.

if i catch about a half a dozen lucky breaks, its conceivable that i could be able to do this thing.  even then, though, there are caveats that would get in the way.

for one, i cant fuckin stand pandering, and the kids that are gonna do well in this contest will, with virtual certainty, be the ones who pander to the juggalos.  my opinions of the juggalo in general are not the most accessible and touchy-feely, to say the least.

so, it would take some skillfull writing, indeed, for me to come up with a verse that actually matches my honest feelings, and doesnt piss off the majority of the crowd/judges.

@piggofdoom -  stage presence is surprisingly easy to adopt.  so easy, i have to wonder why nobody does it.  theres a zillion tricks that anyone can learn to use.  mostly, the same principles that apply to acting, apply to stage performance.  in the end, its just like pretending, like play-acting when you were a kid.  not much different, except that you arent really pretending.

personally, i prefer to use anger and hatred.  workin myself up into a state not dissimilar to when im about to start a fight.  i find that words and energy flow out of me very naturally, without conscious effort, when im keyed up like that.

you should absolutely consider doin this.

  awfully paranoid, arent you?

I think another trick that I heard somewhere is to imagine that the entire audience sees you completely naked. It's supposed to help or something.

thats an old wives tale.  far as performance is concerned.  intended to get you past stage fright, and is meant for oratory, not performance for entertainment.

if stage fright is a problem for you, then performance will be a huge problem no matter what you do.

in my experience.  if it works for you, by all means, have at it.

I'm talking about music I personally like. I listen to ICP for their imagery, not their lyricism. I wish J would be rapping like back in 2002-2006, but that's obviously not the case.
