Local pastor brings Christian message, Faygo to juggalos

 

CAVE-IN-ROCK — Pastor Joseph Dutton of The River ministry found himself among the masses, hoping and praying fans of rap group Insane Clown Posse’s tenure in Southern Illinois would be short-lived.

In 2007, no one knew exactly what to expect when thousands of fans, known as juggalos and juggalettes, descended on Hardin County for the annual Gathering of the Juggalos. The multi-day festival features music, professional wrestling and other entertainment.

“The first year, when we heard of the juggalos coming, we were part of the community who rose up against it and prayed and fasted and sought legal measures to stop it,” Dutton said of himself and his wife, Carolyn, also a pastor in the ministry. “God did not stop it, the law did not stop it, but God did intervene and, I believe, prevented much from occurring that may have happened without our prayers.”

God also intervened in Dutton’s heart, the pastor said. He felt the Holy Spirit saying that someone needed to be Jesus to the men and women, many youth and young adults, who labeled themselves juggalos.

The next year, when the gathering returned to Southern Illinois, the Duttons approached the event and its attendees with a softened heart.

“We began to see that they were kids and people seeking for belonging and love,” Dutton said. “They were seeking for a community to belong to, and the church world was not providing it for them.”

Launching a “juggalo ministry,” the Duttons and members of their congregation began praying for, instead of against, the juggalo population. Believing it to be a form of spiritual attack, they condemned the spirit and supported the individual. Dutton said he received a report of one gathering attendee who, in the midst of the event, accepted Jesus Christ, packed up and went home.

In recent years, representatives of The River ministry have set up on the grounds of the gathering, with consent from Insane Clown Posse and Psychedelic Records, and passed out water and Faygo, the beverage of choice for juggalos.

Dutton said many festival attendees come to the region expecting to find stores and restaurants nearby, but in reality, there isn’t much.

They supplement the food and nourishment with ministry and teaching. When organizers put out a sign promoting the teaching and prayer, people followed through and showed up to participate.

“We have the great commission and commandment of ‘Go ye …’ but whoever thought ‘go ye’ would be made so easy,” Dutton said. “He sent them to us, and our ‘go ye’ was simply, ‘Go ye out the front door and chase them down to the liquor store yelling, “Hey dude, you want some free food and Faygo?’”

Last year, the group ministered and fed 31 juggalos. One of them was healed of a condition she had from childhood, Dutton said.

“We see now that God has given us a commission to feed the juggalos and give them water,” he said. “We provide food, both physical and then gently spiritual, and water in the form of bottles and The River of living water … We want to meet their need, physically first, then speak and sow into their lives spiritually.”

I don’t have a link and i’m not sure he set a record that night, but i’m positive it was not jump. it was a great night ! the burning man was an the island and 1,000’s of juggs. on the beach, across the lake, chanting “burn,burn,burn”!
