I finally got around to listening to Big Hoodoo’s Asylum and I was surprised by just how terrible it is. His first album was great. The songs sounded good, and he rapped about his Hoodoo gimmick quite a bit. On Asylum, all the songs were forgettable and he rapped about Hoodoo on like one song. What happened? I wanted more of that Crystal Skull sound. What a piece of shit. Fuck you, Big Hoodoo.

Yeah, my opinion of it was the exact opposite. Crystal Scull was boring as fuck to me and Asylum won me over on him. His live show was sloppy and uncomfortable when he was promoting Crystal Scull and when he was pushing Asylum at the Riddle Box tour he looked comfortable and his set was tight. Part of my problem with Crystal Scull was that he relied on the gimmick too much. Anytime the songs had potential to go somewhere he would fall back on some random Southwest Voodoo style lines instead of giving his character any depth. Asylum let him explore other areas of the character and give him a little more than “uh…he’s like Papa Shango but…he raps”.

My opinion is opposed as well. Asylum is a 8/10 and crystal skull is a 6/10

i actually really like Asylum. wasn’t much of a fan of Crystal Skull. there are definitely a few bangers on Crystal Skull, don’t get me wrong. but i feel like Asylum is a major improvement.
also – my favorite song on Crystal Skull is called Dark Side or something. even though that song is super fresh, i can’t help but think “Hoodoo, you’re the shit and all, but please don’t blow your magic all over me. gross, dude. gross”
Hoodoo is one cool motherfucker though i’ll tell you that. nice guy every time i met him.

I thought it was dope. I liked Crystal Skull, was a dope concept album. Asylum focused more on Hoodoo showing of his lyrical skills and being a dope hip hop record.

It’s interesting seeing different opinions. Personally I loved Asylum. Crystal Skull felt like a one trick pony album. It depended too much on the Hoodoo gimmick for my liking.

I liked the Album. I mean music should always allow for someone to express themselves and on a few songs he definitely did that but the album was great. It showed raw, pure emotion when needed and dark,fun carny feel when needed also. Dude has really adjusted and fits in well with Psychopathic.

Asylum is dope. but i would say i enjoyed Crystal Skull more and bumped it wayyyyyyyy more. I would like him to rap about more of the hoodoo shit on his next record. A mix of asylum and crystal skull type tracks would be fuckin perfect.

Shitty?! Asylum is the shit. now that I’ve spent more time with the album, the only song I really don’t like on it is Psycho Love. Everything else is great.

Asylum was WAY better than Crystal Skull. Just like the above person said the only song I also didn’t like was “Psycho Love” other than that the album is absolutely solid. He also gives 100% energy on stage when he performs.
