To me, the strongest underrated aspect to ICP was their undeniably hypnotic catchy hooks, the type that lead to a rabid cult fanbase and trance like experience when singing along to with fellow fans.
I've always wondered if it was Mike E. Clark (then later Mike P) who wrote all those amazing hooks (the melodies, mainly) during the original deck era or was it ICP themselves?
The Show Must Go On, Southwest Voodo, Halls of Illusions, etc. etc.

I'd have to go with the butterflies and shit, bugs and shit, centipedes and creepy crawlies in Picker Forest, who knows
Nice theory, however..
It ain't about Violent J or Shaggy, The Butterfly or 17.
When you speak of c@tchy cl○wn h●●k$ , what'd you think they meant?
Truth is they come from GOD!
GOD'S always behind behind them.
The hook-writer is GOD and may all lyricists find Him!
But seriously, I think they write em.

J's explained this before, where he and Shaggy just go into the booth and do whatever comes to mind.
They keep doing it over and over and over and just keep what works because they're looking for flow and rhythm in step with the theme of the song they're working on. Sometimes they bring on additional writers/lyrists.
I think this was even mentioned in Behind The Paint section about Myzery never really feeling the Psychopathic Records vibe in full; saying that J even showed him some of their trade secrets and Myzery thought it was a trick or something. J said he was disappointed because he only showed his closest friends their trade secrets.
So yeah, The Warlock is pretty spot on from what I've read and heard.
Although Twinklenuggets McButtCheese is also credited as writer and theme director for half of the albums, so take from that what you will.

I think the hooks greatly fell off after Milenko. I mean, they existed after that, but they were hit and miss, whereas previously they were absolute hit every single time. It got worse over the years. The hooks specifically on the Wizard of the Hood album are nothing interesting and in fact are completely repetitive and boring. It's like J was trying to apply the same writing technique he did with Mike Clark's music.
The fact is that it's Mike Clark's music that adds the finishing touches to anything ICP does. Violent J even said as much himself. He basically said the carnival magic wasn't there without Mike Clark's music and that anyone else on a Mike Clark song still wouldn't add the carnival magic to it. It had to be ICP and Mike Clark to get that actual vibe.

Yeah like others have pointed out, it's been described that the hooks are typically written by J and Shaggy. But, they've also utilized other people like Legz Diamond, Syn, and Young Wicked to sing the hooks and I'm willing to bet all 3 of them had at least some input on what they were singing to make it work best for them.
