As an art major, I think cover art is a very important piece of any album. I’ve always loved ICP’s Joker’s Cards visually and when the new card was revealed, a lot of people were hating on the design but weren’t saying much past “it doesn’t look like a jokers card” and that they hated it. I think it looks cool but I have been thinking on it. I have a theory which I’m going to type up and throw behind a spoiler tag, but I wanted to know what you guys think. Honestly and thoughtfully, what don’t you like about the way the new card looks?
Okay. Here it goes.
A lot of pre renaissance art is super flat. Art theorists have talked about the flat art as being introspective and more about the world within rather than the physical world of depth.
Look how flat that is compared to
Leonardo da Vinci was not a religious man. His work was usually commissioned by religious people but he rejected religion and thought of art as being about worshiping nature so he wanted to really focus on spatial depth. You can really see it in this piece. This isn’t about Jesus and the disciples, it’s about beauty and depth.
So my theory is that the new joker’s card has too much visual depth.
I think that one white line that shines down his metal armor creates an illusion of depth that isn’t really there. And they both have it.
Here, it’s on his nose and lip. A light source. This one even has slight shadows and the mustache even appears to come forward towards the viewer.
If you look at other joker’s cards, you’ll see that they don’t have any such lighting.
There’s also issues with coloring but that’s a different argument.

I prefer Leonardo’s original painting of the last supper know as the Penultimate Supper.

The Kangaroo, the jello, the 28 disciples, and the 3 Christs. It just works. The fat Christ balances out the two skinny ones.
…
But yeah, @robtidwell , you may have a point there. It could also be that people like to hate things and nothing they did would have made people happy.

i dont look that deep into it
I just look at the first 6 – and they all just work, they go together, and you can sort of get the point of what they are by looking at them
COC – a clown, a simple one, an intro
Ringmaster – a puppeteer, you can see it right away
riddleb ox – same thing
Milenko- you look at it and see a wizard
jekel brothers, not quite as clear as the earlier ones but one listen to the into and its immediately clear
The wraith – just a given
now we look at the new deck, I dont really see anything that ties it all together as nice as the first 6. And i just find this new card a boring looking figure. the one without the facemask on it is kind of cool looking, but it doesnt hit me like the others.
