Man….that was bad. J was high out of his mind, and he kept going to the back to likely do more lines. What the hell. Worst rendition to an album ever.

I think it’s more likely that he just didn’t prepare. He seemed lucid, just fucked. And someone else pointed out that the bounce back of sound was likely partly responsible.

There’s no doubt he fucked up but really the show was fun and that’s all that really matters to me.

Same thing happened at the Milenko show a few years back but I had one hell of a time. I think we tend to forget that, although we’re still bumping these albums many years later, huge possibility they haven’t given it a spin since the album dropped. Plus there’s a lot of shit going on this year … meh.

Monoxide hinted that he still doesn’t know all the words to Mirror Mirror. Refreshing considering he probably remembers as much as I do.

thought the performance was exactly what i expected.

enjoyed it more than i thought i would, too.  i dont really like half them songs all that much, but the middle part of the show, from the staleness through to we belong, that was excellent.  particularly while bein amidst the homies, n all.

hugs n shiny beamin.  i dug.

got kinda introspective toward the end.  odd vibe, for me, hard to put in words.  but good stuff.

That’s dope as hell. I was over here in Cali hoping ya’ll were alright. Damn da internetz! Not entirely though, I was able to catch a few songs from FLH’s live feed. Shit gave me chills.

Hopefully everything aligns right for me to go next year.

J was pissed from dealing with the city and grounds people all day. He wasn’t all there. Which is sad because that should have been just as positive for him as it was for us. Regardless it was dope as fuck. I had a great time. Both clown sets were phenomenal.

What’s this talk of J being back on drugs lately? Is that all just speculation or any real solid evidence to back it up? I hope he’s making smart decisions for the sake of his family and loved ones. I did notice him being a little different in that long faygoluvers interview a while back, but that can be just a personality change or even just him talking different cuz it was a big deal, but who knows..

Hope J’s doing alright, only watched some of the shangrai la performance on a stream but didn’t notice anything from that.

It seemed to really be talked about more when he lost all that weight.  People began to state that he was addicted to opiates, which could be prescription pain killers, etc.  That was how I lost a lot of weight, but once I got clean, I gained some of it back, but at least I am not pushing close to 400 any more.  Opioid addiction/dependence is HELL and it steals your soul.  The meds I became addicted to were – Vicodin, Oxycontin, Percocet, and Morphine.  Those were prescribed for my chronic pain issues/back issues – spinal stenosis, sciatica/neuropathy, degenerative disc disease, torn discs, bulging discs, and it did help a bunch, the meds did, but the side effect for me was dependence and addiction.  It got so bad that I was taking 10 Vicodins to start out the day and then adding more throughout the day.  I do not know how I did it, but I held a job and no one knew anything at first, but then they did, etc.  Suboxone was what helped me.  Been on it for a few years now and now take one 2mg film a day.  That is where I am gonna be at for a while.  It also helps with the pain, so my doctor said, if I needed to, I can stay at that dose for as long as I need to be

Its possible, J mentioned being in a horrific car wreck at some point back, was very likely taking pain pills for that at least for a short time, in addition to whatever else he takes. Plus he is 45 years old, add in a lifetime of rocking shows, taking bumps in JCW,  etc., it may be catching up to him the same way it catches up to anyone else.

Beyond that, it is more likely a combination of exhaustion and stress. Look at the last year at Psy, all the bs with Twztid, Otis, the march, the gathering almost not happening, then all the pressures of lawsuits and running a label, not to mention a divorce and Blahzay Rose, that is a hell of a lot for anyone to deal with.

Considering ICP has a huge catalog of music and are always writing new stuff, as others have said he probably has not practiced Shangri-La in 15 years since it debuted.

I wasn’t at the Gathering and, like everyone else, I’ve heard how J fucked up a lot but it seems it was still fun times. I finally watched some footage on Youtube and parts of it were even worse than I thought it would sound. So, who knows the real reason or what’s going on with J, if anything. But the excuse of “probably has not practiced Shangi-La in 15 years since it debuted” would be a complete bullshit of an excuse if that was at all true. They planned the performance, advertised it, and knew they had Juggalos from all over coming to see it. You better put in the work to practice the shit out of it, which aside from actual rehearsals could be just a matter of playing it in your car and remembering the lyrics and rapping along to yourself. I don’t buy the no practicing in years thing at all, that’s his fault entirely. All speculation of course.

Am I the only one that finds it lame that they just rap to a recording of themselves and it’s not just instrumentals? Like they literally just put on the full studio recording and rap over top of it. I hate that, which also makes it lamer that he’d fuck up so much. Is this common for rap shows? I’ve never been to any live rap acts aside from ICP shows.

I’d have to agree, no excuses for not remembering lyrics make sense though I know if I were awake for 24 hours straight or more partying and running a festival, even trying to remember where to stand on stage could be trouble.

It is lame having the album just playing in the background but the whole ICP stage show is the equalizer. With faygo flying in all directions, and people running all over the stage, dropping the mic, falling, getting KO’d by a rogue 2 litre, are all very plausible. Imagine if that happened, mic went flying and nothing happened for a song or two. Its a lame explanation but seems to be the case.

Rap shows vary, most have no stage show like ICP, and are boring, sound nothing like the recording. Some rappers use the instrumental version and do all the rapping themselves, those are the better shows. The rest have the recording playing, barely rap and just yell “WHATTT?!” “UHHH!” “C’MON!” the entire time.

That could be one reason for them not playing the beat too now that you mentioned it, I always thought it was either some copyright or who owns and got the masters to the records or something like a Backup Data fuck up so they don’t have the full studio sessions and the beats without vocals anymore.

They got some instrumentals like the ones on riddlebox oddities but not those to the Rest of the album and,

(please correct me if i’m wrong i don’t feel like skipping through the riddlebox weekend dvd right now)

only those were played during riddlebox shows without lyrics.

So I don’t know do they own Shangri La?

They don’t have the TFTLP instrumentals. The last time Dark Lotus toured, I got my hands on the backing track. All the TFTLP songs are straight up album versions, all the othes were either semi-instrumental or had the vocals mixed very low.

How the hell would that make me special? I’m riffing off Cabracan’s post over here, wanna go jerk that in private maybe? I got a picture of VJ you can borrow to help you finish if you want.

Not having instrumentals or the master sessions of songs is no excuse for playing full album versions of songs during a performance. There are programs available that can strip a song of all vocals if necessary. Old songs were recorded the old school way with data files and shit so those are not as easy to go back and change. Anything recorded on a computer should be saved and easily changed. Pull the verses off, leave the adlibs, stabs and hooks for a show disc.
