ICP together are fantastic. They tend to balance eachother out in ways, maybe even temper eachother.

However, as solo artists, the two guys have released some pretty damn great songs as well. Some feature the other on a chorus or skit, but I believe that both Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope are excellent solo.

I think Shaggy’s solo albums are close to perfect as a Pyschopathic disc can come. Lots of variety and styles.

Violent J has the epic Wizard of the Hood, and The Shining. The latter had a lot of filler material and wasn’t as good as it hoped, but all of the vocal styles he switched up for each song is impressive. Also, he has recorded a lot more songs through the Insane Clown Posse saga as a solo artist than 2 Dope. And they’re Some of the classics: My Axe, Night of the Axe, Night of the Chainsaw, Psychopathic, The Juggalo, The Loons, Bloody Bitch Dead, Burning Up, The Killing Fields. Shaggy has his share like Get Off Me Dog!, Southwest Strangla, Rebecca, Clown Luv.

So whatcha think? They work best as a team? As solo artists? Does one work better solo and the other not?

Considering violent j writes 80-90% of all icp material and also wrote the majority of fuck off and fuck the fuck off id say they are better as a team.

this question becomes a no-brainer when you factor in the live show.

No question, better as a team.

I’d, say Shaggy is the better of the two as a solo artist though. Not that he can rap better than J, but just the overall package.

ESPECIALLY On FTFOMF. It just felt so damned blatant.

Well, that one was settled rather quickly.

Shaggy not writing the majority of his raps doesn’t bother me, though. He laces it all with his own flair and persona and cadence.

You know what diminished some quality for me? Finding out about how Hell’s Pit took all their background music from that Halloween sounds album. I still love it though, but now I cant unhear it.

To be fair that was Fritz the Cat who stole that music, maybe the clowns knew and thought they were so underground no one would notice, but that’s purely speculation…there is a lot of that music and sfx on the first Dark Lotus album as well.

Yeah I’m sure the clowns had no idea Fritz was doing that, to be honest.  Coming in the studio like “DAMN Fritz!  your killen it with those effects on the new batch of beats for Hells Pit!”

I’m sure Fritz didn’t think we was gonna get caught with his hands in the cookie jar.

I really dig those remix Hells Pit albums, I found myself bumpin those more than the original.

I was under the impression that it was mainly Mike P! Shows how much I know.

Yeah I agree the clowns probably didn’t  know, but the wackness stains through, just a bit.

“Hey yo Fritz! Throw on one of the beats, that we can shake our mothafuckin rolls to!”

Fritz: – laces a beat over Fantasia film instrumentals-

They got caught again though when they released Jumpsteady’s The Road. The underlying music is supposedly mostly Midnight Syndicate stuff. At least according to the lawsuit. And it says that J and Kuma produced the music for that.

But why does that bother you so much? Sampling is part of like most hip hop songs. I mean I usually get disappointed when I find out that a beat that I always thought was super impressive, is basically just a great sample and a drum set. Necro for example is one of my all time favorite producers. But there are so many of his songs where I later found the sample and sometimes he wouldn’t even add that much to it. But still, he has great taste in samples and it still takes skill to transform them into a good hip hop beat. But of course it would be much more impressive if he’d created the beat from scratch.

Anyway, why does it bother you specifically with the Midnight Syndicate samples? What’s your take on sampling in general and is this a special case?

Side note, Three 6 Mafia sample them a lot as well. Check out their whosampled page: https://www.whosampled.com/Midnight-Syndicate/

To be fair, the Midnight Syndicate stuff was more than just a lil sample, they used pretty way too much to get away with not crediting them, just they may have felt that since they were forced to license the albums for Hell’s Pit, why not use the rest on Jumpsteady’s album, which was a bad idea.

so is it just because they didn’t give credit where credit was due, or have works like hells pit also gotten artistically devalued to you, eversince you’ve found out about the many samples?

I dont care about the sampling, I just can’t believe they were that stupid.

Hell’s Pit wasnt their best,  they fell off after Jeckel Brothers.

Stay on the sidelines and like a song or complete disk or dont… Having done too much research just makes you sound like an ass… No offence to everyone above me, just know us that like songs read too much and cant help but feel a certain way. Dont want to filter anyone, i swear it! Just stop looking into back stories and everything will be enjoyable to everyone?

That seems to be more your problem than ours. If you don’t care for detailed discussions, then you are the one who should probably stay on the sidelines and let the ones who give a shit talk about it. I don’t see what’s wrong with it other than that we sound like an ass to you. But again, that seems to be something that you should probably work on for yourself. Like, why does people going into detail translate to sounding like an ass to you? But I guess you won’t go into that because that would be going into too much detail and you’d be too afraid to sound like an ass.

I feel it, but i like to nerd out on these type of things.

Like even nerding out on why they wouldn’t just clear it. I guess i just enjoy learning from the mistakes and success or record companies and the music industry in general.

I dont nerd out on like the vinyl. I always wanted the vinyl i could now afford…but my collection is total like hype beast not a “real collector” collection. I might have something like 30 to 45 pieces. I never counted them and i forget i buy some.

Anyways its fun. To me at least…for some bands..
