A (presumed) linguist, Matt Daniels, did a study on various rappers and how many unique words they use in their lyrics. He took the first 35,000 lyrics and ranked rappers by how many unique words they used. ICP is on that list with 4,146 words. It turns out they used more unique words than Tupac. Aesop Rock is at the top of the list with 7,392 unique words.

i was surprised by a few of the rankings. krs-one and public enemy being middle of the pack, just above puff daddy, for example.
icp would be much higher if he had used the most recent albums, instead of the oldest.

I used a research methodology called token analysis to determine each artist’s vocabulary. Each word is counted once, so pimps, pimp, pimping, and pimpinare four unique words. To avoid issues with apostrophes (e.g., pimpin’ vs. pimpin), they’re removed from the dataset. It still isn’t perfect. Hip hop is full of slang that is hard to transcribe (e.g., shorty vs. shawty), compound words (e.g., king shit), featured vocalists, and repetitive choruses.

Interesting spectrum of music though. Wu-Tang get broken down in to individual memberes so would J and Shaggs be a 70% 30% split of the total?
