Boondox’ “Abaddon” Pre-Sale Begins This Tuesday, April 1 on Hatchet Gear!

There’s already been a lot of hype and speculation about Boondox’ sinister return from the haunted crops with his forthcoming album “Abaddon,” which drops on Tuesday, May 13. When his brand new official website (http://www.boondoxthescarecrow.com) launched, there were seven mysterious seals posted. With the launch of the site, the first seal was broken. What will each broken seal reveal? Even WE don’t know. All we do know is that more and more of the “Abaddon” puzzle will be unveiled as we inch closer to the album with the breaking of each seal week after week

So, JellyRoll, I’ve been hearing your name around for a long time but the first time I actually saw you was at the 2012 Gathering of the Juggalos when Twiztid had the Dirty South Night and you were there to perform with your crew and you tore that place up! My friends and I were standing in the back and we were going so hard! I’m from the South so I love your style of music and I had never really heard anything from you before, but after that I was a complete fan and y’all tore it down. All anybody was talking about was that Dirty South Night and JellyRoll. It was amazing! Did you have as much fun as I had that night?

Yeah, man, that night is like probably one of the most monumental nights of my life. I had done some ‘shrooms and I didn’t realize that whenever I came from the back. I hadn’t looked at the stage or the crowd or anything; I hadn’t done a soundcheck or none of that professional shit because I’m not a very professionaI person…

(laughs) AND you were on ‘shrooms!

Right. I come out of that place completely blown out of my mind on ‘shrooms to just seeing thousands of people under that tent. I’ve seen the footage; I walk out there and just put my hands up like “YEAH!” I didn’t have a microphone, my DJ wasn’t there, I didn’t know what was going on. But it was great. Probably one of my favorite shows ever.

I think it was a monumental night for everyone there too. You guys tore it down, you were so live, had so much energy, you were pulling people on stage. It was just one big party and I think that’s what the Gathering is all about. You guys encompass that all the way through and I hope you come back to the Gathering to perform. Do you want to?

Ah hell yeah! For sure!

OK, I know you’re from the Dirty South. Where exactly are you from and where did you grow up?

I’m from Nashville, Tennessee. I grew up in Antioch; it’s like on the south end of Nashville.

So you’re just straight in the mix with the country music. I mean, Nashville.

Oh yeah, for sure.

So did you grow up on music or is it something you got into later?

I’ve always had music in me. My mom was a big music person. She was that ol’ white trash woman that would be singing Bob Seger in the kitchen smokin’ a cigarette in her nightgown with curlers in her hair? That’s my mom. Everybody’s seen that mom before and that was mine. I grew up like that.

Hell yeah. I know you have a daughter because I follow you on Twitter (twitter.com/JellyRoll615).Are you married? Taken?

I’m in the wind, man.

So you go wherever the wind blows you? (laughter)

Yeah, man. My main interest is the baby, that’s for sure.

And how old is she?

She’s almost 6. She’ll be 6 on May 22.

Oh, wow, OK. So she’s the light of your life? She’s your only kid?

Yeah, man. She’s in kindergarten and shit but she’s my little baby. Plus she’s my roadie. If you ever see me in Nashville, Tennessee, I’ll be with her. Unless I’m honkytonking. If I’m out honkytonking or getting fired up or something, she’s at the house. But if I’m just out piddling about, she’s with me for sure.

That’s great! One thing I really believe in is that little girls really need their daddies. This world is CRAZY! I really think it’s important for a child to grow up with their father, so that’s really, really cool. As I was doing my research on you – ha ha ha! – I came across this Waffle House lawsuit. Now I’m just getting to know you and there may be others out there getting to know you, so what’s this all about? How’d you get into a scuffle with Waffle House?

I put their little logo on a CD called “Whiskey, Weed, and Waffle House” and they were enraged. That mixtape wasn’t out more than 15 days before I got a cease and desist letter from ‘em.

Really?

Yeah, they were awful, dude. They were really pissed off. I couldn’t believe that a white trash lil’ restaurant would be so upset with me using their logo. I feel like I should have got endorsed.

Did you even mention that? Did it even come up that you were giving them press?

Oh yeah. That’s what I told ‘em. That was my side of the story and they were pissed. They sent a letter to my attorney with them trying to sue me and they were like “Your client is one of the most unprofessional people we have ever dealt with.” ‘Cause every time they would send me something, I’d just post it all over the Internet. It was the best thing that ever happened to me.

So you just had to take their logo off the mixtape but the music still came out?

Oh yeah, I had to take everything off. They didn’t even give me the option. I don’t know if y’all have ever been cease and desisted…

Oh hell yeah! Are you kidding?

Yeah, I’m sure you been cease and desisted more times than I have, but I don’t even know why they even send you a letter because they just contact you through Facebook and just lock up all your shit anyways. After they sent that, I couldn’t log onto my YouTube or Facebook or anything. They had me locked down out of everything.

Now I don’t want to get too much into your new mixtape “The Biggest Loser” but in your video for “We Got Next,” you do have some Waffle House photos. Are you allowed to use those or did you just say “fuck it?”

Heeeeell no. But what they gonna do, sue me?

You seem like a pretty wild guy. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Performing at the Gathering! (laughs) They may not be the craziest thing I’ve ever done but it’s one of the craziest experiences I’ve ever had. I went there again last year and I played right before Krizz Kaliko one night at like 2 o’clock in the morning and I had done ‘shrooms and I was convinced that there was a guy in the middle of the crowd who was trying to kill me.

So you’re telling me that you can perform front to back all your songs while tripping balls on mushrooms and you’ll be fine?

I’ve done it three times now. At all the Gatherings. In fact, I will not break tradition this year even after that bad trip last year.

Well, I’m going to hold you to that. I’m gonna hunt you down and make sure that you are tripping. The Gathering can be a pretty crazy place to do mushrooms, man, that’s for sure.

Yeah, that’s probably one of the craziest things. I mean, I’ve had sex in a lot of public places that I probably could have gotten in a lot of trouble for.

Like where?

Well, pretty much every public vacation place I’ve ever been to, from resort swimming pools to pretty much every beach on the east coast.

That’s amazing (laughter).

Yeah, it just happened the other night at a resort at in South Carolina. That’s where I’m at right now.

Oh so you’re on vacation right now?

Yeah, I’m just trying to get my head straight before I do this little tour.

Yeah, let’s talk about the tour. How many dates is it? Who’s going out with you?

I think it’s like 15 dates and I’m headlining. All of ‘em in the Midwest, man.

You’re headlining but who else is going out on tour with you?

My homeboy Devious T  and my homeboy DJ Hylyte. He saves me every night when I get drunk. He’s for real, G.

When does the tour go out?

April 11th in Knoxville and I think it ends May 18th in Nashville.

Let’s talk about your mixtape “The Biggest Loser.” What was your process for putting together this album? I gave it a listen and it’s definitely my style of music. What was your thought process going into making this music?

It was kind of a transitional record for me. I kinda get real high initially when I’m recording straight. Y’know, pop another pill, pop out another track. So somehow I accidentally became the token white trapper rapper. I’ve seen a lot of other white guys trying to rap about the whole trap thing and it kind of blew up for me. But as I get older, you know what happens. You listen to “The Biggest Loser” its not nearly as trap friendly as, say, “Weed, Whiskey, and Waffle House.”

Yeah, I was gonna say, there’s a track on the album called “Bad Apple” and I really, really dug it. It’s fun, different and it really has a mature sound to it while still being that shit you can bump to. It sounds really different from a lot of the stuff on the other album. What was your motivation for that song?

Well, I’m gonna tell you the whole truth, man. That was the beginning of a new era for us. When we get the recording done, shoot me your email address and I’ll send you some more tracks from the album.

Oh no, I have the album…

No, no, no, no, no. I’m talking about the ALBUM album. If you like “Bad Apple,” I’ll shoot you some records that you’ll like.

Oh, I LOVED it.

My whole attitude with the mixtape was, man, I just want to give this to people so it can be heard. Y’know, it’s on iTunes, it’s on Amazon and it’s for free, man. Download it, burn it to a CD, give it to a friend. I’m not trippin’. Just listen to it.

That’s amazing. How do you feel about this whole new world of free mixtapes? Do you think it’s a good avenue to get some of your music out there before your album drops?

Oh yeah. Exactly, man. It’s easier for people to get the music for free digitally than it is to pay for it anyway. Bottom line: As long as we can get people to keep buying tickets to the concerts and buying T-shirts, we’ll be alright.

You have a dope video for the song “We Got Next.” I didn’t know you were such a good singer, you have a really great voice—you sing on a lot of the hooks of your songs—but here you say “She ain’t even know my name, now sho’ty wanna be my friend.” Were you talking about someone in particular or were you talking about the game in general?

Just in general. It wasn’t even, like, as much about a friend as just the game, you know what I mean?

Yeah, that’s how I took it. I would think that you would be happy—and I’m sure you’re happy—but you kind of play it like it’s funny to you.

I’m just from a different place, y’know? I mean, I meet a lot of these rap dudes and a lot of them are gay. Its just funny, man. I mean, I have a place in L.A. now it’s just like a whole other continent, man. I feel like I went to England or something.

That’s really interesting. So you spend half your time out in L.A.?

As of this year.

What made you make that change?

I got some TV shit in the works.

Alright! Cool! Nothing you can talk about now, but we’ll be on the lookout for it.

Right, man, I’m trying to sneak shit in without blowing my cover.

No, no, no. We’ll just say you have “works in progress” in L.A. (laughs)

Yeah, I’m doing some recording out there and it’s all just funny, man.

Oh, I agree with you. People are fake and phony and it’s like 100 miles per hour out there.

Yeah, I don’t get around that much out there so I can’t tell you what’s going on like in South Central but like in Hollywood and these meetings? Oh, man, that stuff is funny. It’s hilarious.

Is there anything you’d like to leave us with? Any shout outs? Anything you want anybody to know?

Yeah a lot! Give a shout out to Boondox for me. I know he’s working on his record, I think I’m on there. If I didn’t make the cut, tell him to send me a new track. Shout out to Bukshot of Underground Avengers, man, I’m trying to put out an album with them this year. Keep the underground roots straight. If you can get me to the Gathering—Boy, I feel like you just gave me a wish list—man, me and Lil’ Whyte should play the main stage this year at the Gathering, especially if the rumor is true it’s gonna be in Ohio. Is it?

Oh hell yeah, man! It’s true! Ohio!

That’s awesome, dude, I love Ohio. It’s one of my favorite states in America. It’s one of the most white trash states ever. I love it.
