For people who know the Juggalo scene in more than one city, how would you say the scenes you know differ?

I can’t claim to really know the scene anywhere, but even just going to shows in differet cities you pick up a different vibe.  My first two shows were in Philly, my third was in Baltimore.  The Baltimore show had way more of a FA-MUH-LY feel to it, people were so happy to be at the show, I got so many daps and high fives from strangers, people were buying me drinks passing me joints- it was a blast.  At the same time, it was also tame in way.  The only time a pit would form was when the artist on stage asked for it.  People were docile enough that I was actually playin a cheerleader role and whoop whoopin to get people fired up at times cuz the artist seemed disappointed at times.  Also I was down near the front and some people didn’t really know how to behave.  I was grippin the barricade, a very higih valie spot and one guy kept trying to push in front of me, over and over.  then he tried to tell me he had to go get his girl so I had to let him do that, but the girl was justfine.  They pushed me back in front of this chick who got real mad at me part way through said, I don’t know why, I wasn’t doing anything I don;t think and I couldn’t hear what she was saying. Anyway not cool but the majority of the show was a blast.

The Philly shows were drawing about twice as many people, and way more hardcore ninjas.  There’s always a pit, even between sets sometimes, and it’s always insane, brtual motherfuckers who are there not to have a good time but to kill with ruthless abandon.  There way more people painted and dressed up, and you can tell there’s way more of a “scene” there where there’s the cool juggalos who are lookin for the other cool juggalos to hook up with and reaffirm each others coolness.  Booooooooo.  I think most of them come from New Jersey and Delaware.  That said people are still pretty much cool if you talk to them, though don’t expect a lot smiles, daps, or anyone buying you a drink.  Overall though there’s just way, way more energ.  y at the show and you can really feel it.  Its like being in the big city instead of the small town.

I was flying solo and hoping to find people to kick it with a bit, since the artist formerly known as LuckyNumbrX111 didn’t want the Dr. Freshness VIP package in Philly.  That made Baltimore a much, much better place to be.  Tons of people would stop and talk to me, everyone was just happy and seemed happy about all the other people there, it was cool.  I definintely prefer the Balltimore scene to Philly At the same time, I can see how people prefer the rougher, more serious, more big-time vibe of Philly.

So, how do you compare tow difference Juggalo Scenes?  It can be communitiies that you’ve been in, or like mine just differences you see at shows.  But wat are the biggest./most surprising differences you see>

Outside of the single gathering, I’ve only been to icp shows in la/oc area and the energy changes from show to show. The crowd fluctuates and you never really know what you’ll get.

I think these days it’s a Twiztid vs. ICP environment. I mostly go to show in Charlotte NC. They Clown shows are so much more about Fam and love, people chillin and getting fucked up together. Twiztid shows are all groups of ninjas getting shit faced drunk and fighting each other.

My experience was….

In Rochester NY, three shows overy a decade, fun crowds with a little tension. Not sure how to explain it. US NYers are like that though. A little edgy.

Raleigh, NC Twiztid show was good. That was the first time I heard the family chant, actually.

Gatherings are always dope, with occasional scenes of people who are just chosen assholes. Looking forward to seeing a PSY show in Colorado now.

anyhow.

takin the places ive seen icp et al, and puttin them in order of where i prefer to be, its roughly:

saint louis, columbia, springfield, oklahoma city, des moines, detroit.

doesnt mean that okc is more live than detroit, or whatever… lotta different factors.

but, travel time aside, thats about how it shakes out.

cuz of the six, thats the crowd i dug the least.

okay, so, whyzat, you say?

hm.  dont really feel like baggin on detroit.  certainly i could, just dont wanna.

suffice it to say, they werent anywhere near as dope as they acted like they were.  some pricks, some chumps, some unearned elitism from kids whose mama drove eighteen minutes to get em there, instead of eighteen hours.

theres more, but like i say, though, i aint wantin to pick on em.

a little thievery.  scammin/beggin money and/or drugs.

aint tryin to dog em, though.

not one of em came in after carnival of carnage, somehow…

jokes notwithstanding…  the reason [as ive said in the past] is that when you make a list ranking anything, sumn has gotta be last on the list, however worthy it might be.

detroit is last on that list.  thazzit.

[addendum]

as i typed this, i realized that im only goin by the gathering, here.  by that logic, i should also be including peoria.  but realisticly, there probably werent many peoria ninjas there, all in all;  and surely most [or damned near all] detroit ninjas were in attendance in 2000.

anyway, im only goin by the ninjas that i knew were from detroit, or at least the near area.  random ninjas from wherever count as part of wherevers scene.

[addendum to the addendum]

while i was typin that, it occurred to me that i can judge the scene of [insert city here] just a little bit, based on gatherings…  but that seems like too small a sample to go on.  see peoria, above.

  awfully paranoid, arent you?

6. Providence

7. Seattle

8. Hartford

I can’t fairly place Columbus because it was Juggalo Weekend and everyone I met was from out of town.

A few years ago (on Ashtrays & Action Figures) Monoxide said Detroit crowds just stood and stared at the stage. He joked that they might have something like PTSD living there.

My first ICP show I ever went to was in Richmond VA and there were a lot of chick’s there. NOVA (northern virginia) sluts. I got my knob slobbed for a blunt and a 10 dollar beer (I gave her money to buy it. I was 16..). What an experience, check in out of scool early to drive 4 hours and see the clowns.. memory lane

In South Carolina, it was juffalo rednecks. In Florida there were a lot of “I’ve been down for this long” lo’s. In Atlanta, it’s mad family love, everyone gets along np. In Detroit, the family aspect is dead, and juggalos have their own set groups they don’t stray far from.

Huh.  Always thought it would be dope to hit up Juggalo Day or Hallowicked in Detroit some day, but maybe I should temper my expectations.

same here.

the big hangup isnt so much detroit or its scene, though.  its that i only get so many opportunities to travel across the country these days;  gathering is a much, much higher priority.

Detroit is the closest big city to me (unless you count Toledo) so most of my shows have been there (and because I’m older now, all of my recent shows) but from what I remember of the other cities I can’t say that anyone’s really wrong. BUT! I will say, with almost all of ICP’s recent Detroit shows have been special event shows like Hallowicked or Juggalo Day. Shows in which you have people comin from all over the country and I think that really plays into the lack of energy and the lack of the family vibe (one, people are wore out from driving to get there and two, people don’t know each other as well as they do at regular local shows). Plus, people seem to have higher expectations for those special event shows than they do for regular shows. I can’t remember the last time ICP made a tour stop in Detroit that was just another random show that was made up of strictly Detroit (and Detroit area) people. Detroit back in the day though, 96-98, back when I first started going, was off the hook, now, it is just a bunch of ninjas standing there staring at the stage.

Other places I’ve been, Toledo was the best but we don’t get shows anymore and haven’t for a long time (with the exception of the Monday show we got last year). My first two shows were in Toledo and were pretty historic, the first show got shut down by the fire marshall, the second, the very next night, is the show where J broke his collar bone. Also, Columbus was always great as well. I’ve been to one Cleveland show but I honestly can’t even remember it it was so long ago.
