No they weren’t. They started in 87, the emo genre was started in the early 80s. Yes, the are also considered to be punk rock and pop punk, but emo is a subgenre of punk rock that sounds almost exactly like pop punk.
 
And just to enlighten everybody AGAIN based on their ignorance emo stands for emotive hardcore a subgenre of punk rock. The lyrics are usually confessional and go on about politics, personal relations ships and break ups, just like most genres.
 
Even if you are talking about over emotional, which emo doesn’t stand for, being “over emotional” does not equate to being depressed. That is quite a ignorant and stupid connection people make. Crying over a hot dog being dropped, that would be over emotional. Getting super happy over a bug getting killed, that is over emotional. Hating somebody for not liking the same music as you, that is over emotional.
Me, I talk about how much I hate everything, that’s who I am. So if hate is all that I talk about then I lack emotion and that makes me under emotional, so Umo would be the term. If anything, I’d belong to the gothic culture. I do like more gothic music, such as Marylin Manson, NIN, CombiChrist, Suicide Commando, Agonoize, etc. Learn some shit my dude, learn some shit before you throw words around.
