If you have kids in the public education system, or support it in any way, call your representatives and urge them to vote against confirming DeVos as Secretary of Education

Betsy DeVos is a billionaire who aims to defund public schools in order to fund religious schools and privatize the educational system. She does all of this under the guise of "school choice."

I watched the entire confirmation hearing, and she was unable or unwilling to answer basic questions about steps she would take to help all children get a quality education.

She is a billionaire has no experience with public education whether k-12 or higher education.

https://callyourrep.co

I urge you all to call this and ask your representative (or more likely the unpaid intern working for them) to vote against DeVos's confirmation.

If you have any other questions please let me know.

As crazy as this sounds I am for anyone or ANY action getting rid of common core.  Having spent 6 years working hand in hand with schools and children and Having many educators in my family I honestly do not like this choice but if my other choice is pro common core or pro leaving the system the way it is I will gladly take the extreme.

Our education system is getting worse yearly.  Kids are graduating high school without even being able to solve basic pre-algebra problems.  That is a serious issue.

So in short I honestly don't care unless a better option appears.

I have a question. What is so bad about her?

From what I am hearing from the right, she is a person who will help push the education system out of the hands of the left. The unions hate her too and that gives me more reason to like her. I see her as someone who will not follow the current status quo of the current educational system. I am all for that. The system needs a major shake up, if not a complete dismantling and rebuild. My hope is that she gets rid of all courses that have the word "Studies" or "Critique" in them.

Everyone I know my age can. Maybe you need new friends? Meth heads are not exactly good examples.

Stopping at division and multiplication is not acceptable. Americans are getting dumb man. Just because you are used to it doesn't mean it is right.

That is really sad. I have never understood that. Math is simple and straight-forward. It may not be easy, but it is simple.

I don't think they should let children graduate from high school without at least passing calculus. It is the gateway to all higher mathematics. Higher mathematics is for college while base mathematics, like algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus should be for the lower education system.

I honestly don't know or care about your background.  Don't need to.  I do know I work very closely with educators and hear from at least one usually more daily.

The system is worse then when I was a kid. You?  Who knows I believe your a few years older.  My sister (a teacher) is 37 and complains often at how kids are graduating and then immediately failing their first year of college and dropping out because they are not ready. That is an issue.

If you want bird courses more power to you but it won't help the next generation.

if you want to dunk your head in a washing machine more power to you but its got nothin to do with anybodys point.

so what, the system used to work perfectly, but we recently changed it up?  its the same shit.

my opinion, which im aware is an opinion and not some objective fact that cannot be denied, is that the greater problem is parenting.  now, parenting overall may or may not be worse than before, but from what i see, the majority of parents dont take their kids educations particularly seriously, these days.  more concerned with twitter and pokeyman.

I agree that is a bigger part of it absolutely.  I can get behind that. There are a lot or people having kids that don't want to be parents honestly. I do feel parents often neglect their kids educational needs.

The whole issue needs to be fixed honestly.  Teachers need to be in regular contact with parents and try and get them more involved also.

So many variables and they are all shit.

If you think methamphetamine and math don't go well together, you could use a better education yourself. Studies show quite the contrary. Take for example Hungarian Mathematician Paul Erdos. He was one if the greatest math minds of All Time and he took meth daily. In fact, he once quit for a month and remarked how mathematics in general had been held back as a result. He credited amphetamine for most of his breakthroughs. There are many more like him. Don't stereotype people and you might have an easier time. Don't take my word for it...

Dont know why I have to tell you this but you do know there are thousands of different amphetamines?  Hell there are thousands of different combinations to make meth/ice and all have very different effects based on the person.

Your evidence is situational at best. Just saying.

What is so bad about her is the fact that she has no experience with public education. She has never been in public education, neither have her kids. She has never dealt with not being able to pay for college, not have her kids, yet she will be in control of fafsa.

She lacks knowledge of even the most basic debates in education (look at the proficiency vs growth in the confirmation hearing)

She refused to answer basically any question from the Democratic members of the committee. She would not commit to enforce the individuals with disabilities in education act. She said it should be left up to the States. So if you have a kid with autism or cerebral palsy and you live in the wrong state, your kid is fucked.

She didn't know about the gainful employment regulations in place to ensure universities aren't fucking over students, taking their money, but not providing then with anything that helps them find gainful employment (Trump University, for example) and then refused to say she would enforce these regulations.

In Michigan she has advocated for school choice and charters, and michican continues to have some of the worst schools in the country, only federal and state funding that should be going to help those failinf schools is going to failing religious schools instead.

Common core definitely has issues, and teachers need to have more control over their students learning, but there needs to be accountability.

She is a billionaire religious dominionist nutcase who wants to use the school system to "advance the kingdom of god."

She claims to be a proponent of choice. I support school choice. Omaha has a program where any child can go to basically any school in the city. I will have to double check the efficacy of such a program. DeVos has shown time and time again that she doesn't give a single shit about public education, and would rather take that money and use it to fund religious schools while our education system deteriorates.

It isn't just the unions that hate her. She is opposed by almost everyone in the education community, including her Alma Matter

That's just the tip of the iceburg.

Government schools are like government housing: people only choose it when they can not afford anything else.  Have any of the recent presidents sent their children to public schools?  Of course not.

The public school system has been pretty bad, but it's only getting worse.  I'm convinced you could double every schools budget, and the students wouldn't perform any better.

On one side of my family, my little brother was the last to graduate.  7 of my cousins have dropped out since.  I see their posts on facebook, most of them are barely literate.  Part of the problem is the wealthier families in the county had a new (public) school built for their side of town.

I've seen my cousins trying to do division under the 'common core' nonsense curriculum.  You've never seen a kid struggle so hard with basic division problems that could be done in about 5 seconds using normal long division.

I support any decision that pulls kids out of failing public schools.  If people are really concerned about education for the poor, let them put their money where their mouths are and donate to non-profit community education centers.

"An astonishing amount of people get their news from late-night comedians..."

This is an interesting perspective on school choice, & critically distinguishes between knowledge and education (and highlights Trevor Noah's deceptive rhetoric about DeVos.) Remember when comedians were funny?

The public school system has it's issues, but the solution is not to take the funding and giving it to for profit religious schools. Especially when DeVos's track record in Michigan is as abysmal as it is. I have no problem with school choice. I DO have a problem with saying you're all about school choice, but implementing charters with little to no accountability that are not doing any statistically better than public schools is stupid. And Betsy has business interests in private education.

Krunk, my problem is not with school choice. Students should be able to get a quality education even if that means leaving the district they were assigned. My problem is with Betsy DeVos herself. She has no experience in education other than her lobbying and political donations. She is a a religious zealot who advocates using the school system to bring forth the Kingdom of God. She had described her advocacy as being in the Shephelah, which was a region in ancient Israel where battles were fought (e.g. David and Goliath)

I genuinely fear theocracy of any kind. Our tax dollars should not be funding religious schools and the indoctrination of children, period.

Here's some interesting & funny stuff; considering policies on their own merit rather than demonizing a messenger with a narrative seems more sound:

I have already said (in this thread even) that my issue is NOT with school choice, but rather the bastardization of school choice in order to promote the religious indoctrination of children with taxpayer dollars.

I also have problem with the fact that she doesn't advocate for the same level of accountability for charter/private schools, which have been known to be considerably less transparent than public schools.

This video is a bunch of kids who don't know what they are talking about. Or edits of their responses. You could do this with literally every side of every political issue in the country.
