This show was way fresh. The turnout was small, but there was magic in the air. I think many who attended knew DJ Buddha, the original promoter of the show who died all of a sudden at age 32 about one month ago. Ticket sales were cut off online after that happened which may have affected the turnout, but the ninjas who did come out were in for a treat. I was rollin with my Homie from Calgary who I hadn't seen in close to a decade. He snapped this photo of me rockin some Madrox Man's Myth facepaint as we are about to head into the gig-

After purchasing tickets at the door we rolled to the bar, another reason this show was so fresh-drinks were 4 bucks. 4 BUCKS! Cool ass venue 4 sure. Shortly after getting our drink on, Whitney Payton took the stage and got ninjas way hype during her set, which included her crowd surfing and rhyming in the middle of the crowd-

In between her set and Aqualeo I snapped some photos of the crowd and merch area. I hope ninjas checked out the thread I put up about the Edmonton show the night before Lethbridge, that show had a massive turnout. I think all the artists were still buzzing off that high from the night before, because they all gave 110 percent as if they were playing Woodstock! As you can see there wasn't much of a line-up at the merch booth in Lethbridge lol-

PJ the merch ninja graciously posed for another pic, as more Lethbridge Juggalos poured into the venue-

Next Up AQUALEO.They damn near stole the show. I was so impressed by their performance that night I copped their album and gave them props at the merch booth. They autographed it and were real cool dudes.

Then the show moved into legendary territory. Before Twiztid took the stage Jamie and Paul did a mic check and the mics were totally fuckin up, to the point of letting out ear piercing blasts of noise.Twiztid's stage crew came out and re did all the wires on stage while Jamie and Paul audibly started saying they would leave and every one would get a refund if they didn't fix the mics really quick. They then took the stage and started to perform their set while the mics continued to totally fuck up, lol. On stage they then started threatening to leave, then Monoxide seemed to notice his mic fixed during the 2nd song, Jamie's mic continued to fuck up and eventually he just started yelling,"cut! cut! cut!" lol. Best moment of the night for me, Monoxide starting to laugh hard right at that moment, and then just plowing on with the song. laughThey fixed Madrox's mic soon after, lol. Would be great if someone caught it on video, here's some pics of the awesome set they then put in-

I wonder if Twiztid is done adding dates to their new tour in the fall? Perhaps this show will go down as the only Twiztid Lethbridge show of all time. Ninjas did speculate that when promoter "DJ Buddha" passed away suddenly last year, the Lethbridge Hip Hop scene probably died with him. Maybe those ninjas were right.

Discovered this cool write-up on DJ Booda, the original promoter of the Twiztid Lethbridge show. He died suddenly right before the tour started, check it-

Lethbridge music scene mourns James ‘DJ Booda’ Nishima

Image Enlarger

James Nishima, best known as DJ Booda passed away suddenly Aug 28. He will be missed by a lot of people. He inspired numerous local performers and basically kickstarted Lethbridge’s hip hop scene. In addition to being a fantastic  DJ, he was not afraid to dream. He brought in a variety of high profile acts including well known rappers like D12, Riff Raff, Deezuz, Madchild, Swollen Members, Moka Only, Kyprios, Snoop Dogg, just to name a few. He also brought in up and coming rockers like Dragonette and well known names like 54-40, Matthew Good, Finger Eleven and Gob. In doing so he brought a taste of the big city excitement to our small town. And by doing so thumbed his nose at those who would denigrate Lethbridge as Deathbridge.

As any local concert promoter knows, it takes cajones of stone to put on a show in Lethbridge because you never know if people will show up in last minute Lethbridge. Booda knew this and while I’m sure he had his moments of self doubt — moments where he almost decided to quit, fortunately for us he didn’t. Lethbridge is better for it.

He probably lost his shirt on a couple of his shows. I have been to many of his shows in which I couldn’t believe there were so few people in the room and I’d been to to others where there were so many people I couldn’t breathe. But at each one, Booda was there at the door to greet me with a big smile and welcoming arms. And always, the entertainment was fantastic. Booda knew how to put on a party. I had the pleasure of interviewing him a couple times. He was always genial, friendly and most of all excited. His excitement was contagious.

He was an unbelievably hard worker, he had four big shows of all different genres ready to go in September and October alone — Gob with Sophmore Jakes, Sept. 20-, Twiztid with Blaze Ya Dead and Aqualeo, Sept. 21 Sloan on Sept. 26 and The Cancer Bats and Bat Sabbath on Oct. 5. Madchild of Swollen Members is returning to Lethbridge, Sept. 25 to play a memorial show for Booda at Studio 54.
I never really appreciated rap music until his shows gave me the opportunity to interview some of the biggest names in the business. No matter who it was, they would invariably rave about how great it was to work with Booda. He expanded mine a lot of people’s musical horizons. His death leaves a huge void which will take some big shoes to fill.
A celebration of James Nishima has been scheduled for this Thursday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m at Martin Bros Funeral Chapel 610 4th street S, Lethdridge AB T1J 4P3
