its not really debatable.. he isnt signed to a major & is therefore an indie artist… yes they hired warners radio department to push the "thrift shop" single but they arent signed to them…
UPDATE: Zach Quillen, a member of Macklemore’s camp said Macklemore is not signed to WBR and stated that Macklemore owns and operates his own record company, Macklemore LLC. Here is part of his statement clarifying Macklemore’s relationship with WBR:
“We hire out varying services from a few places, just like many indie artists/companies do: PR, distribution, booking, etc. ADA is hired by Macklemore, LLC to distribute The Heist and also is hired to promote at radio. WBR owns ADA and also helps promote at radio, hired on for this specific service and nothing more. People tend to confuse the situation, because it’s highly unique (and revolutionary imo).”

"WBR owns ADA and also helps promote at radio" This right here. He's not signed BUT Warner Brothers cash gets his songs radio airplay. It's mincing words no matter how you slice it. Like I said, debatable. In any debate you will find people on both sides. I personally see this as more of a gimick to sell records.

Macklemore has really come out the woodwork and made some smart moves to get to the short blip of fame for thrift shop, but honestly this guy is sharp as fuck and I dig what he brings all over the Heist, the album this is off of. Great shit, fresh change to the mainstream, I hope he can keep knockin them out and bringing his own movement through this country.

lol if i could afford to hire them to push one of my singles i would... as long as i didnt sign with the label as an artist i would still be independent... & i doubt "this gimmick" is selling anymore records.. most people dont even care to know the difference or the pros & cons of it all...
